Alice Munro’s The Turkey Season was first published in the December 29, 1980 issue of The New
Yorker. It was later included in Munro’s 1982 collection, The Moons of Jupiter.
In the story, the adult narrator looks back at a time in the late 1940s when, at age 14, she took a
job as a turkey gutter (内脏处理工) for the Christmas season.
The story goes into great detail about the various other workers at the Turkey Barn—Herb Abbott, the
mysterious supervisor; two middle-aged sisters, Lily and Marjorie, skillful gutters; cheerful Irene, young
and pregnant; Morgan, the rough-edged owner; Gladys, Morgan’s sister, who frequently calls in sick, and
is rumored to have suffered a nervous breakdown. Finally, there is Brian, a stupid, lazy newcomer.
Eventually, Brian’s rude behavior goes too far. Munro never tells us exactly what his offense is, but
the narrator enters the barn after school one day to find Morgan screaming at Brian to leave the barn entirely.
As we might expect from a Munro story, The Turkey Season produces new layers of meaning with
every reading. One particularly interesting theme in the story involves, quite simply, work.
Munro highlights the conflict between manual labor and intellectual labor. This conflict mirrors
the tension between Lily and Marjorie, comfortable with the work of gutting, and Gladys, who used to
work in a bank and who seems to find manual labor beneath her.
Another intriguing theme in the story involves the definition and enforcement of gender roles. The
women in the story have clear ideas about the ways in which women should behave, though their opinions
often contradict each other. They openly disapprove of each other’s perceived transgressions (违法行为),
and when they do agree on standards, they become almost competitive about who’s better fulfilling them.
The Turkey Season is a touching story with vivid characters and heartfelt moments. If you are into
tales of family, tradition, and personal growth, you should give this book the read it clearly deserves!
24. How many characters are mentioned in Alice Munro’s The Turkey Season
A. 7. B. 8. C. 9. D. 10.
25. Which is closest in meaning to “intriguing” in Paragraph 7
A. Fascinating. B. Simple. C. Lasting. D. Remaining.
26. What can we learn about the possible relationships between the workers

B. They frequently judge or criticize each other.
C. They form strong emotional bonds over time.
D. They maintain a strictly professional relationship.
27. What is the author’s purpose in writing this article
A. To recommend a book. B. To honor a writer.

In the quiet backwaters of Yunnan, Dong Meihua—known as Dianxi Xiaoge—has done something
remarkable: She’s taken the poetic simplicity of rural China and made it irresistible to millions. In her hands,
a village kitchen becomes a stage, and the rhythms of farm life become a story as appealing as any novel.
Xiaoge is redefining through social media how the countryside is perceived.
The Chinese term for this social media phenomenon is “new farmer”. This generalizes the rise of rural
celebrities who use platforms like Douyin or Weibo to document and commercialize their way of life. Sister
Yu: with over 23 million followers, she showcases the rural charm of northeast China as she pickles (腌制)
vegetables and cooks hearty meals. Or Peng Chuanming: a farmer in Fujian whose videos on crafting
traditional teas have captivated millions.
Since 2016, the number of rural influencers has been increasing in once-forgotten villages. What began
as simple documentation has evolved into a phenomenon commanding enormous audiences, fueled not just
by nostalgia (怀旧) but economic necessity. In China’s megacities, where the air is thick with pollution,
there’s clearly a hunger for something real and natural. And rural influencers serve slices of a life many
thought lost to China’s rapid development. Besides, China’s post-COVID-19 economic downturn, marked
by soaring youth unemployment and decreasing urban opportunities, has driven some to seek livelihoods
in the countryside.
As with all formulas, there’s a trap to the new farmer movement. The more popular rural influencers
become, the more pressure they face to perform “authenticity”. Or put another way: The more real it looks,
the less real it might actually be. Yet, for the potential trap, the new farmer trend is a chance to challenge
the urban-centered mode that has dominated China’s development for decades and rethink whether progress
always means high-rises and highways, or if there’s value in preserving ways of life that have sustained
communities for centuries.
28. What remarkable thing has Dong Meihua done
A. She has written a novel about rural life.
B. She has launched a new trend of poetic simplicity.
C. She has transformed a village kitchen into a grand stage.
D. She has had rural life well-received through social media.
29. What is a shared feature of the three rural celebrities
A. They attract millions of followers. B. They display suburban attraction.
C. They prioritize commercial gain. D. They choose only one shooting platform.
30. What factor has contributed to the rise of rural influencers since 2016
A. The urgent demand for natural resources.
B. The dramatic decline in youth unemployment.
C. The intense longing for something in the past.
D. The less environmental pollution in mega-cities.
31. What does the author imply in Paragraph 4 about the new farmer trend
A. It emphasizes authenticity in rural life.
B. It only serves to imitate urban lifestyles.
C. It aims to replace the current mode of community life.
D. It challenges the city-centered pattern of development.

Hydrogen fuel-cell (氢燃料电池 ) vehicles aren’t just sources for science fiction or far-out
experiments. Cars fueled by hydrogen, like the Toyota Mirai and Hyundai Nexo, are already here, and
hydrogen fuel-cell technology is actively evolving and benefiting from billions of dollars in federal
research. So then, why are hydrogen cars virtually non-existent on U.S. roads today
“The answer is simple: economics,” Sergey Paltsev, a senior scientist at the MIT Energy Initiative
told Popular Science. Politicians and automakers once advocated the fuel cell, which turns the chemical
energy of hydrogen into electricity to drive an electric motor, as the future of passenger automobiles, but
the falling cost of batteries and a large number of electrical fueling infrastructure (基础设施) have
propelled battery-electric cars well into the lead.
A big switch to hydrogen cars would require cost-cutting and enormous infrastructure development.
The Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center shows 55 public hydrogen fueling station
locations in the U.S. today, almost only in California, while more than 68,000 active public electric vehicle
charging stations across the country.
“Nothing is going to change next year, or probably not in the next five years, but there are brighter
pathways for hydrogen vehicles,” said Paltsev. It turns out that hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles have
advantageous applications in medium-duty and heavy-duty trucks and aviation (航空). Besides, battery-
electric vehicles can be problematic when you have problems with range or fueling time or heavy loads.
The current impractical application of hydrogen passenger vehicles in places like the U.S. are not a
reason to “just give up” on hydrogen fuel-cell tech. “We may need it for many other reasons in the future,”
cautioned Paltsev, citing geopolitical issues as a factor that could disrupt (中断) access to raw materials
for batteries, thus making hydrogen cars suddenly more economically workable.
32. Why are hydrogen cars not commonly seen on U.S. roads today
A. Lack of public awareness. B. Unavailability of hydrogen fuel.
C. Limited research and development. D. High costs and insufficient infrastructure.
33. What is Sergey Paltsev’s attitude towards hydrogen vehicles in the future
A. Doubtful. B. Hopeful. C. Pessimistic. D. Indifferent.
34. What can be learned about hydrogen fuel-cell tech from the passage
A. It is already cost-effective for passenger vehicles.
B. It fails to solve the problems with range or fueling time.
C. It is practicable due to potential issues resulting from geopolitics.
D. It has unsatisfactory applications in heavy-duty trucks and aviation.
35. What would be the best title for this passage
A. Battery-Electric Vehicles: A Glorious Era
B. Why Are We Driving Electric Powered Cars
C. Hydrogen Vehicles: Struggling Yet Promising
D. How to Build a Public Hydrogen Fueling Station

Have you ever slept a full eight hours but awakened feeling as tired as if you had pulled an all-
nighter 36 Unrefreshing sleep, also known as non-restorative sleep, is exactly what it sounds
like: sleep that doesn’t recharge the body and brain enough to help you feel well-rested. If you’re
constantly struggling with non-restorative sleep, it’s necessary to take a hard look at your habits and
sleep hygiene (卫生).
37 Some people think they need less than the recommended seven to nine hours per night,
but are in reality feeling sleep-deprived. To test whether you’re well-rested, skip setting your alarm on
your day off and see how late you wake up without it. If you sleep in late, that’s a signal that your body
needs to catch up on rest because you’re not getting enough shut-eye normally.
Take a look at any medications you’re using. Sleeping pills and other types of prescription drugs,
as well as over-the-counter treatments like melatonin (褪黑激素), can have “hangover” effects that lead
to morning dizziness. 38 If you’re on a necessary medication that makes you feel dizzy in the
morning, ask your doctor if there’s a way to minimize side effects.
Try to implement the classic sleep advice you’ve probably heard a million times, but likely still
don’t follow. Limit caffeine and alcohol consumption; stay off your phone close to bedtime; create a
soothing bedtime routine and aim for consistent sleep and wake times; and try to sleep in a cool, dark,
quiet room. 39
If you’ve done all these things and still feel like your sleep isn’t restorative, to the point of
disturbing your daily life, it’s worth seeing a doctor. 40 Hopefully, he can help you get into a
routine that leaves you feeling refreshed in the morning.
A. Figure out how long it takes you to fall asleep.
B. Make sure you’re actually getting enough sleep.
C. Everyone has the occasional night of poor sleep.
D. A physician can look for underlying medical causes.
E. It can create or worsen the feeling of unrefreshing sleep.
F. If so, you may have experienced what’s known as unrefreshing sleep.
G. Relaxation practices that minimize stress and anxiety also contribute to better sleep.

The adventure began on a crisp (凉爽的) October day. I was sitting on the passenger side of our
car. While leaving the school, my mother mentioned that she had gone to the doctor that day. “For what ”
I asked, becoming nervous as I ran through all the illnesses my mother could possibly have.
“Well...” She hesitated and my worry increased. “I’m pregnant.”
“You’re what ” I exclaimed.
“Pregnant,” she repeated.
I was speechless to say the least. All I could think was that these things do not happen to your
parents when you are senior two. Then the realization that I was going to have to share my mother hit
me, the mother who had been all my own for 16 years. I was overcome with bitterness and confusion
over a tiny person nesting inside my mom. I had never wanted my mother to have another child after
she remarried.
When I saw the shock and joy in my stepfather’s eyes when he was told of the coming arrival of
his first child, I could not help but feel excited. On the inside, though, I was trying to deal with my fear
and anger.
My parents involved me in all the preparations, from decorating the nursery to picking out names
to going to Lamaze Prenatal classes (Lamaze 产前教育课) and deciding that I could be present for the
baby’s birth. But despite all the excitement and happiness, it was hard to hear my friends and relatives
constantly talk about the new baby. I feared that I would be totally ignored when the baby came.
Sometimes all the bitterness for what this child might take from me would overcome the joy.

M: Well, the two of us still can. The game doesn’t start till eight.
(Text 2)
W: I can’t wait for Sunday!
M: Ah, yes, it’s your birthday.
W: Oh, don’t remind me. I never celebrate that. I am celebrating something though — I passed my
driver’s test and my sister is taking me out.
(Text 3)
W: You destroyed Peter’s laptop. Don’t you think you owe him an apology and maybe some money
M: Oh, come on! Why did he leave it open with a cup of tea right there
(Text 4)
W: Please, I just need a few minutes of your time to straighten out some of the facts.
M: I’ve already discussed the matter with your colleagues. I just don’t see the point of discussing the
obvious.
(Text 5)
W: I haven’t got a clue as to when we’re going to get our marks for last week’s exam.
M: Neither have I. Professor Hartford’s an excellent lecturer but he’s rarely very efficient at
administrative matters, is he
(Text 6)
W: Sorry I’m late. I couldn’t find a parking space nearby, so I had to park my car several blocks away.
M: I hope you didn’t walk too far. So ... I called you because the lights in this room aren’t functioning.
W: OK. Does anybody need to use this room today
M: Well, I’m supposed to meet a job applicant after lunch ... but I can do it in another room.
(Text 7)
W: What do you think we should do today
M: Well, it’s our first day in the city so we should do some sightseeing.
W: How about renting bicycles and exploring the city on our own
M: But I wanted to take the bus that goes on a tour of the whole city. It has a guide who gives information
about the sights and it also makes stops if you want to eat or go shopping.
W: Not a bad idea, but we can do that another day. I’ll stick with my idea. It’s such a nice day and we
need some exercise.
M: You’re right.
(Text 8)
W: Mr. Lang, this is Trudy from Super Value. I am pleased to tell you we have found a buyer for your
house who will match your asking price.
M: Really That’s fantastic! How soon will he be able to move in
W: I already discussed that with him and he said he would be prepared to sign the contract at any time
and take possession as early as next week. He said he is eager to start decorating the house and
making it his own.
M: That’s OK. We can close the deal this Friday. Then I will make arrangements to have my furniture
moved to my new house across town this weekend.
(Text 9)
M: So, Barbara, you’re famous as a journalist, and you’ve written Nickel and Dimed based on your
research. Could you start by telling us why you do secret investigations
W: Sure. Interviews are fine, but sometimes you need to experience it yourself. By putting yourself in
the situation you’re investigating ... you can then write from a more informed point of view.
M: I see. So, what did you do
W: Well, I worked as a waitress, a hotel housekeeper, a nursing home assistant, and a supermarket clerk.
I spent a month in each low-paid job, working in Florida, Maine, and Minnesota.
M: Wow, that’s a lot of different jobs, and places! What exactly did you find out
W: Well, first, the rents were very high and the wages were so low. Also, you have to be a hard worker!
Interviewing people is one thing, but actually doing the job day to day shows you exactly how hard
these people’s lives are.
M: Hmm. And of course, Nickel and Dimed went onto be a very popular book. It was a New York Times
best seller.
W: Yes, I was really surprised at all the interest. I think it really opened people’s eyes, a first-hand account
like that. I hope my book can attract more attention, so as to improve the situation of people in low-paid jobs.
(Text 10)
M: Considering gardening, people tend to picture an elderly man or woman in front of their house. Yet
a recent study among 2,000 young people aged between 18 and 34 has revealed that gardening is
becoming increasingly popular among young people. Kev Smith, who organized the survey, said that
the study showed that gardening suits everyone, whatever their age. On average, young adults spend
around two hours per week taking care of their plants. Two-thirds of participants also said that they love
shopping for gardening items, including plants, seeds and tools. Naturally, the item that is bought most
frequently is gardening gloves, probably the item that is most frequently used too. The most popular
place to grow plants is on the kitchen windows, while living rooms, bathrooms, and balconies are also
popular locations. The study also found that 60 per cent wish they had access to more outside space
than they do at present. However, 78 per cent believe you do not actually need a big outdoor area to
experience the benefits of gardening. Gardening is brilliant for our minds. It includes concentrating on
what you are doing right now, repetitive actions and using all your senses, like touch and smell.

Dear Jack,
An activity with the theme of “Relieve Pressure and Study Efficiently” is planned by our English
club. We’d like to have you as our guest.
Firstly, the activity will be held in the school auditorium at 3 p. m. next Saturday. It aims to
alleviate students’ mental stress and empower them to study more efficiently. Specifically, a
psychological expert will be invited to deliver a lecture to help students know various adjustment
techniques and understand how to turn pressure into motivation. More interestingly, we will organize
English riddle-solving games to shift students’ focus away from the overwhelming schoolwork pressure.
Last but not least, top students will share their practical methods for study.
Hopefully, students can better handle stress, learn efficiently, and embrace the challenges. Looking
forward to your attendance and it would be appreciated if you could give us some insights.
Sincerely,
Li Hua

Paragraph 1:
That big day of the baby’s birth, I felt all my insecurities surface. At the sight of my mother’s
painful expressions due to giving birth, I was torn between the anticipation of a new life and the fear of
losing my place in her heart. The hospital room was all hustle and bustle, with doctors and nurses
passing about, but all my focus was on the woman who had been my world for so long. I clung to her
hand, feeling the warmth and strength that had always been there for me, and I realized that no matter
what, she would always be my mother. I comforted her, saying, “Mom, don’t worry. I’ll be there to help
take care of the new baby. Just breathe!”. Finally, the moment the baby’s first cries echoed through the
room, tears blurring my vision, I felt a mix of emotions surging through me—relief, awe, and a strange
sense of belonging that I had never felt before.
Paragraph 2:
I cried because I never thought I could love a baby so much. As I held my newborn baby sister in
my arms, all the doubts and resentment I had for so long seemed to vanish. This tiny, fragile baby, with
its eyes shut and soft breaths, had incredibly melted away the hardness in my heart. Looking down at
this little miracle, I felt a surge of protectiveness and affection that I had never known I was capable of.
The baby’s small fingers curled around my own, and in that instant, I understood the true meaning of
family—it’s not just about sharing a home, but about sharing love and life’s journey together. The
bitterness that had once clouded my heart gave way to a newfound joy and a sense of responsibility that
I was now an older sister, and I embraced this role with open arms.
