Minu Pauline is the owner of Pappadavada Restaurant in Kochi, India. Late one night, as she watched a homeless woman searching through the garbage bin outside her house, a realization hit her with full force—she had been abandoning perfectly good leftover food while someone in need was looking for food.
Touched by this sad sight, Pauline knew she had to find a solution to this problem. That woman had been sleeping and was woken up by her hunger, so she had to go in search of food instead of sleeping.
Inspired by her desire to make a difference, she decided to take action. The idea was simple but mighty: She placed a refrigerator at the entrance of her restaurant, stored with leftover food that anyone could take for free. This refrigerator became a beacon (灯塔) of hope for the hungry and the homeless.
Each day, Pauline fills the refrigerator with 75 to 80 packets of leftovers, carefully labeling each one with the date it was cooked. And there are days when she goes above and beyond, putting in 100 packets to ensure no one leaves hungry. The self-service refrigerator is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, allowing anyone in need to access a warm meal whenever they require it. It's about recognizing the value of resources and combating food waste.
In an interview with The Huffington Post, she passionately emphasized that while money may belong to individuals, resources are a communal asset. She believes that wasting resources, especially food, is not only a loss for individuals but also a disservice to society as a whole.

Pieter Bruegel's iconic 1565 painting The Harvesters hangs at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The work shows people harvesting wheat nearly as tall as they are. "Nowadays, however, if you walk through a wheat field, you basically see that wheat is about knee-height. The reduced height is essentially a consequence of being bred (培育) along with genes for increasing production to feed a growing population," biologist De Smet explained.
De Smet said wheat was just one example of how historical artwork could allow us to track the transformation of food crops over time. He teamed up with art historian Vergauwen, a friend since childhood, to document such art work around the world. They have been mainly looking at things where they can spot changes in shape, color and size.
Their interest in plants in artwork began with a visit to the Hermitage Museum, where they noticed an odd-looking watermelon in an early-17th-century painting. It appeared to be pale and white on the inside. Biologist De Smet assumed the painter had done a poor job. But art historian Vergauwen had a different idea. "No, this is one of the best painters ever from that era. So if he painted it like that, that's the way it must have looked like," he explained.
Other paintings revealed that both red and white watermelons were grown during the 17th century. "With all the genetic knowledge we now have, we can look at how something comes about in more detail," said De Smet. "For example, until the 18th century, European strawberries appeared tiny in paintings. They then grew in size as they were crossbred with North American varieties."
Ultimately, the team hopes to create an online research database of historical plant artwork. They seek the contributions of art enthusiasts around the world via the social media. "However," Vergauwen reminds, "if you're going to use, for example, Picasso to try and understand how a pear looked in the early 20th century, you might be misled."
28.What can we learn about the painting The Harvesters
A.It shows how people successfully grew wheat.
B.It proves that wheat was much shorter in the past.
C.It gives clues about how w heat in the 16th century looked like.
D.It explains the consequence of different breeding methods.
29.What inspired the research team to start their study
A.Their preference for food crops.
B.Their friendship since childhood.
C.Their divided views on an old painting.
D.Their shared interest in the Hermitage Museum.
30.What is the message from Vergauwen in the last paragraph
A.Art enthusiasts are not careful enough.
B.Abstract paintings often mislead people.
C.Oil paintings are hard to understand.
D.The source paintings need to be realistic.
31.What is the purpose of the text
A.To comment on historical plant paintings.
B.To tell interesting stories behind plant artwork.
C.To inform readers of a scientific breakthrough.
D.To introduce a study on food crop transformation.

When adult humans meet a baby, many can't help speaking in a higher-pitched (更高音的) and sing-song y voice. This shift, known as parentese, is not unique to humans. It has also been observed in animals like monkeys and gorillas. Now, scientists are adding one more species to that list: bottle-nose dolphins.
Dolphins are intelligent animals that live and hunt in groups. They communicate in a unique way: Every individual produces its own signature sound that acts much like an ID card, usually by its first birthday. But how does each come up with its distinctive whistle For babies, it might have something to do with listening to Mum. To solve this mystery, researchers examined the sounds mother dolphins make.
Scientists studied 34 years' worth of recordings of sounds made by 19 female bottle-nose dolphins. When the mother dolphins were near their young, they continued to make their signature sounds, but at a higher frequency. They also used a wider range of frequencies than they did when their babies were not nearby.
This discovery suggests that using these modifications, mother dolphins assist their young in learning how to produce these calls themselves. Since baby dolphins often spend some years with their mothers before living on their own, it makes sense that this adaptation would help them learn to communicate. At the very least, the higher-pitched whistle likely gets the babies' attention. "It's important for a baby to know, ‘Oh, Mum's talking to me now,'" says marine biologist Janet Mann.
This kind of research could help us understand how language developed in humans. "It is absolutely essential to have basic knowledge about other species and how they communicate," says Mann. "I would be really interested to see whether dolphins also change their sounds when interacting with babies of others, which is what happens in humans."
32.What do the underlined words "this mystery" refer to in paragraph 2
A.How dolphins develop their unique sounds.
B.Why dolphins live and play in groups.
C.What aspects of intelligence dolphins possess.
D.Whether dolphins can use parentese like humans.
33.How did the researchers carry out their study of dolphins
A.By recording parent-child interaction frequency.
B.By analyzing mother dolphins' sound features.
C.By measuring the distance between parents and children.
D.By examining the speech organs of mother dolphins.
34.What is a suggested reason why dolphin mothers use parentese with their young
A.To express worry and care. B.To teach them hunting skills.
C.To help them learn to talk. D.To distract their attention.
35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.Some new findings about dolphin communication
B.The value of studying dolphins' language
C.A comparison of the parentese of humans and dolphins
D.An introduction to the development of dolphin intelligence

Physicist and Nobel Prize winner Richard Feynman developed a clever learning method known as the Feynman Technique. It involves explaining what you're learning to others. By teaching what you've learned from memory, you engage in active recall. 36. It also ensures that you understand the topic, because you can explain an idea if you truly understand it. The technique consists of four repeatable steps.
To begin, choose a concept or a topic you wish to fully understand. 37. The more interested you are, the faster you'll grasp it. Moreover, a personally interesting topic will keep you motivated and engaged.
 38. Write notes and explain it in a way that makes sense to a five-year-old. If you'd rather avoid actually teaching someone, you can just teach it to an imaginary audience. But it works much better if you use a real person. They'll be able to let you know when something isn't clear.
While teaching, you may discover gap s in your understanding. 39. Review your notes, reread books, or seek external help to ensure you have a complete understanding of the context before moving forward.
Now that you fully grasp the concept, test your understanding by trying to teach it to another person. This will help you identify any remaining areas of uncertainty you need to revisit.
The Feynman Technique is a great way for kids and grown-ups to learn. 40. You need to actively think about the problem instead of passively reading or listening to someone else. However, with great efforts in mastering this method, you'll see your learning results improve quicker than ever before.
A. It is mentally demanding.
B. This helps the information stick in your mind better.
C. Teach it to a five-year-old, who would give you direct feedback.
D. Your curiosity about it will determine the pace of your learning.
E. Once you have chosen a topic, you can teach it to someone else.
F. Active engagement plays a key role in promoting deeper learning.
G. When this happens, refer back to the original material for the missing pieces.

Tom could communicate well with other people through the computer or even on the phone, but when it came to making public presentations, he was hopeless. He was aware that people at conferences would count up the times he said such things as "what I really meant to say was..." when he got nervous.
Tom was an expert in Reality Robotics Company. His boss had asked him to do something that he was absolutely scared about. The next month he would be presenting on behalf of his company, and there would be a lot of people, and his boss, who had never attended Tom's presentations, wanted to impress the audience with the innovative work that the company was doing. Tom knew his boss's respect for him would plummet (坠落) if he said that he could not do it. So, he worked like crazy on the task.
One day, he felt a great need to relax. He turned on the TV. He laughed, and smiled through the first show, making him feel a little better. But it was the second show that really got to him, where the ventriloquist (腹语术者) Arthur worked with his dummy (假人). This really provided him with an inspiration for how he was going to make his much-feared presentation a success.
The next day, he organized a meeting of the people that had the skills he needed, and, of course, his boss. When he explained what he wanted to do, he could sense that everyone was with him on this plan. But a lot of work had to be done for the object of the plan to be completed.
It was the day of the presentation. Tom was somewhat nervous, but nowhere near to the extent that he usually was for just such a situation. And they had to get to their destination early, for what needed to be done had to be completed before the audience knew what was going on.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
The much-anticipated presentation started.
Tom walked onto the stage, looking exactly the same as the presenter.

The presenter spoke in a calm and well-organized way, displaying amazing products of the innovative work of the company as well as how the goals had been achieved. He even mingled the speech with jokes from time to time, which aroused joyful laughter from the audience, who were all immersed in the refreshing atmosphere. To conclude today's presentation, we'll invite a mysterious guest here. You can never guess who he is! They thought they were twins at first, but when Tom explained what all this was about, the audience erupted with thunderous applause, all believing it was an "impossible mission". To assure them, Tom and the dummy presenter performed a few more dialogues, which brought the presentation to its summit.

Through her selfless act, Pauline has sparked a ripple (涟漪) of kindness and compassion in her community.
24.What happened to Minu Pauline in paragraph 1
A.She got to know a homeless woman.
B.She received a very strange customer.
C.She saw the struggle of a poor woman.
D.She met with a lady collecting garbage.
25.What does the underlined word "mighty" in paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Powerful. B.Demanding. C.Ridiculous. D.Interesting.
26.What does the fourth paragraph mainly tell us
A.Why Pauline set up the free refrigerator.
B.How Pauline operates her free refrigerator.
C.Who can take food from the refrigerator.
D.When more free refrigerators are available.
27.What will the text most probably talk about next
A.People's reaction to Pauline's free refrigerator.
B.The spread of Pauline's charity in her neighborhood.
C.The praise from the community to Pauline's action.
D.The challenges for Pauline to run her charity group.

Minu Pauline is the owner of Pappadavada Restaurant in Kochi, India. Late one night, as she watched a homeless woman searching through the garbage bin outside her house, a realization hit her with full force—she had been abandoning perfectly good leftover food while someone in need was looking for food."
She placed a refrigerator at the entrance of her restaurant, stored with leftover food that anyone could take for free. This refrigerator became a beacon (灯塔) of hope for the hungry and the homeless."
"每天,Pauline都会在冰箱里放上75到80包剩菜,并仔细地在每一包上标明烹饪日期。有时候,她会付出更多,拿出100包来确保没有人挨饿。自助冰箱每周7天,每天24小时开放,任何需要的人都可以随时获得一顿热饭。可知,本段主要讲述Pauline如何运行她的免费冰箱的。故选B。
27.考查推理判断。根据最后一段"Through her selfless act. Pauline has sparked a ripple (涟漪) of kindness and compassion in her community."

Pieter Bruegel's iconic 1565 painting The Harvesters hangs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The work showed people harvesting wheat nearly as tall as they were."
Biologist De Smet assumed the painter had done a poor job. But art historian Vergauwen had a different idea. ‘No, this is one of the best painters ever from that era. So if he painted it like that, that's the way it must have looked like,' he explained."
Vergauwen reminds, ‘if you're going to use, for example, Picasso to try and understand how a pear looked in the early 20th century, you might be misled.'"Vergauwen提醒说,"如果你试图用毕加索的作品来理解20世纪初梨子的样子,你可能会被误导。"
De Smet says wheat is just one example of how historical artwork can allow us to track the transformation of food crops over time." Ultimately, the team hopes to create an online research database of historical plant artwork. They seek the contributions of art enthusiasts around the world via the social media."

But how does each come up with its distinctive whistle For babies, it might have something to do with listening to Mum. To solve this mystery, researchers examined the sounds mother dolphins make." 故选A。
Scientists studied 34 years' worth of recordings of sounds made by 19 female bottlenose dolphins."
This discovery suggests that using these modifications mother dolphins assist their young in learning how to produce these calls themselves."
When adult humans meet a baby, many can't help speaking in a higher-pitched (更高音的), sing-songy voice. This shift, known as parentese, is not unique to humans—it has also been observed in animals like monkeys and gorillas. Now, scientists are adding one more species to that list: bottlenose dolphins."

The much-anticipated presentation started.
Tom walked onto the stage, looking exactly the same as the presenter.
The much-anticipated presentation started. The presenter spoke in a calm and well-organized way, displaying amazing products of the innovative work of the company as well as how the goals had been achieved. He even mingled the speech with jokes from time to time, which aroused joyful laughter from the audience, who were all immersed in the refreshing atmosphere. At the end of the speech, the presenter said, "To conclude today's presentation, we'll invite a mysterious guest here. You can never guess who he is!"
Tom walked onto the stage, looking exactly the same as the presenter. Dumbfounded, the audience were all rooted to the spot and then couldn't help exclaiming, "How could it be " They thought they were twins at first, but when Tom explained what all this was about, the audience erupted with thunderous applause, all believing it was an "impossible mission". To assure them, Tom and the dummy presenter performed a few more dialogues, which brought the presentation to its summit. What an innovation!
