Four years ago when I was a boy of 11, I got into the biggest trouble as a kid. It was a Saturday morning. Both my parents were out, leaving me and my10-month-old sister home alone. Anyway, my sister was still asleep in her room. In fact I had the house to myself. I decided to do some drawing. Soon I gave up. Nothing was on TV, so I felt bored. Then I saw the candles on the shelf. I had an idea! What would happen if I set fire to some kitchen paper Well, of course it went on fire, but it wasn't the tiny flame(火苗) I’ d expected, and I couldn't blow it out. I threw it on the floor, and then luckily got my dad's boots(靴子) and stamped out the fire.
I thought I was safe until there was a HUGE hole in my room. When my mum came home later, she smelt the smoke immediately. She dropped the shopping bag, luckily for me, over the hole. I thought this meant she would never see it. However, after running round the house checking for a fire, she of course picked up the bag and saw the hole. Next I was grounded (关禁闭) and in trouble for months. Even worse though, the hole was still there, reminding me of what I did.

“Most traffic accidents shouldn't happen. They happen because people are careless. A frequent cause of traffic accidents is speed. Some people drive too quickly. This means that if they have to stop suddenly, they cannot stop quickly enough to avoid(避免) hitting other vehicles(车辆) or people. You need to remember this when you are crossing the street or walking along the sidewalk.”
“It's not only drivers who cause accidents, however. People on foot— pedestrians, and bicycle riders often cause accidents, too. Pedestrians sometimes walk out into the street without looking. You should always look on both sides before stepping into the street.”
“Do any of you ride a bike Bicycle riders can cause accidents by changing directions suddenly or without warning other road users. Before you turn left, for example, you should check behind you to make sure there aren't any cars, trucks or buses coming. You should show with your left hand to tell that you want to turn left. You should not turn until the street is clear.”

What should you do if there's an earthquake at school How can you protect yourself when you are caught in a stampede(踩踏) The last Monday of March provides you with a good chance to learn about safety.
This day is China's national safety education day for middle and primary school students(全国中小学生安全教育日). The purpose of the day is to give students more knowledge about safety and make sure of students' safety.
A survey done by the China Youth and Children Research Centre showed that school accidents kill more elementary and middle school students than anything else. The main accidents come from stampedes, earthquakes, fires and sports injuries(伤害).
What can you do to keep yourselves safe Staying calm is the first and most important rule when you face accidents. But different accidents have different self-protection advice.
A stampede is possible anywhere. The larger a human crowd gets, the more likely stampedes will be to happen. When students around you begin to push, stand still and try to hold onto something, or stay in a corner until the crowd leaves. If you fall down in a moving crowd, cover your head with both hands. Lean to one side, curl up your body and bend your legs.
Earthquakes are common natural disasters. When you feel the ground shake, drop down, take cover under a desk and hold on. You should stay indoors until the shake stops. If you are outdoors, don't stay near buildings, trees or power lines.
When there's a fire, follow the teachers' instructions, leave the classroom quickly and use a piece of wet cloth to cover your mouth and nose so that you don't breathe in smoke.
