She is a teacher and principal of Huaping Girls High School in Lijiang City. "I am very grateful to her. It was her persistence that gives us girls from the mountain the chance to go and see the word outside," said Yang Qian, a current college student who graduated from Zhang's school.

Recently, the topic “Chinese people can eat such a sweet melon but can’t do without this grandma” has topped the hot search list. The grandma is 94-year-old Wu Mingzhu, called the “queen of melons”, a melon-growing expert and academician. Among Wu Mingzhu’s classmates was Yuan Longping, who later became the “father of hybrid rice”.
Wu Mingzhu was born in 1930 into a scholarly family in Wuhan city. After her graduation in 1953, she was assigned to work in Beijing. But Wu had already set her eyes on her long-awaited goal. “What I studied was the science of fruit and vegetables. I wanted to work in the fields not in an office,” said Wu.
In 1955, Wu voluntarily went to work in Shanghai County, Turpan Basin, where working conditions were quite hard. She found that the Hami melon, a rare specialty fruit which was once common in the area, was in danger of becoming extinct if not properly cultivated (种植). Wu spent years visiting over 300 production teams, picking out 44 melon varieties. She overcame a variety of difficulties to produce particularly delicious melons in a scientific way, winning over the local farmers accustomed (习惯的) to folk cultivation methods. Then the promotion area covered most of Xinjiang's main commodity areas, and a group of melon-rich villages appeared.
From more than 60 years, Wu Mingzhu and her team has cultivated more than 30 varieties, brought the sweetness of melons to people, and promoted the melon series with Chinese characteristics and a complete breeding innovation system to the world. When first hearing her nickname of “a pearl in the Turpan Basin”, Wu said, “In Xinjiang, there are thousands of science and technology workers like me. They have worked hard for decades on the frontline of agriculture. I’m just one of the ordinary ones.”
8. Why does the author mention Yuan Longping in the first paragraph
A. To tell us Wu's partner and social circle.
B. To prove Wu's success resulting from Yuan's help.
C. To make a comparison between Wu and Yuan.
D. To let us get a further understanding of Wu.
9. Why did Wu dislike the job in Beijing
A. She wanted to go back to her hometown.
B. She was attracted by Xinjiang's fruit.
C. She preferred to research in the fields.
D. She thought Beijing unsuitable for agriculture.
10. How did Wu persuade the locals to adopt her way of producing melons
A. By expanding the planting area.
B. By developing high-quality melons scientifically.
C. By sharing expert knowledge with them.
D. By providing enough financial assistance.
11. Which of the following best describes Wu
A. Promising B. Confident C. Devoted D. Patient
D
Booking your next vacation to space with out-of-this-world views could soon be a reality. Orbital Assembly Corporation announced two new station concepts designed with space tourism accommodations. One of the stations, called Pioneer, could orbit Earth as early as 2025.
The Gateway Foundation circulated ideas for a space hotel in 2019. The goal of the stations is to run a space business park that can serve as a home away from home with room for offices and tourists. Orbital Assembly was founded by the Gateway Foundation team as a way to help make these dreams come true.
The proposed Pioneer station can accommodate 28 people. The second station, Voyager, scheduled to open in 2027, can hold up to 400 people. “The goal has always been to make it possible for large numbers of people to live, work and thrive in space,” says Orbital Assembly’s COO Tim Alatorre.
Both stations look like a wheel and will feature artificial gravity that allows guests to move comfortably on each station. Pioneer features five modules built around the rotating “Gravity Ring” architecture design. Tourists may still feel some weightlessness but will also be able to drink out of a cup and won’t have to be tied to a bed to sleep. The gravity works similar to how a spinning bucket pushes the water out to the sides of the bucket and stays in place, Alatorre explains. Near the middle of the station, there will be no artificial gravity, but gravity gradually increases further away from the center.
While the Pioneer station will be smaller than Voyager, guests can still shower, eat and drink sitting down in areas with gravity. Each station is furnished like luxury hotels on Earth. Voyager will feature a restaurant and suites with views of Earth.
A significant barrier to space travel is the cost. However, Orbital Assembly expects tourists to seek a trek into space as space travel eventually becomes less expensive. “We envision our Pioneer and Voyager space stations as the ultimate ecotourism destinations. Once people get to space, it will change their perspective about Earth,” Alatorre says. “Space travel is still at its early stage, and we’re excited to do our part to push it forward to help improve life on Earth.”
12. What is the goal of the Pioneer and Voyager space stations
A. To revolutionize space travel.
B. To serve as luxury hotels in space.
C. To offer a unique and immersive experience.
D. To enable large scale living and working in space.
13. What do the Pioneer and Voyager stations have in common
A. Open time. B. Artificial gravity.
C. Suites with views. D. Passenger capacity.
14. What can we learn from paragraph 4
A. The “Gravity Ring” rotates around the station.
B. The gravity is weak in the central point of the station.
C. The gravity operates like a spinning bucket keeping water inside.
D. The “Gravity Ring” on Pioneer is the same with that on Voyager.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. No Gravity Travel: Pioneer and Voyager Stations
B. Overcoming the Barrier: Pioneer and Voyager Stations
C. Space Hotels for Humans: Pioneer and Voyager Stations
D. Luxury Travel Destinations: Pioneer and Voyager Stations

For the first two years in primary school, I was an extremely shy girl. I had a few friends, but it wasn’t easy for me to be very outgoing, even if I knew them well. If I was with strangers, I was even quieter. So I was not good at meeting new people, I was in constant fear that I would do or say something wrong. As a result, on our school’s annual play day, I usually sat in a remote corner to watch the performance alone, although I hoped to sit in the front rows to see the actors more clearly.
One day in the third grade, my teacher Mrs. Sally called me into her office and said, “Oh, Mary, you’re great at memorizing things, and you have such a sweet voice. You are perfect for Jenny!”
But I bowed my head and dared not speak. The teacher saw this and then said, “Of course, plenty of girls would love the role, and I could find somebody else. But I hope you could try it for me. I had you in mind for Jenny while writing the play! If you really don’t want to, you can turn down the offer.”
My mind was running wild when Mrs. Sally, whom I loved and admired, asked me to play the role.
“She believes in me!” I thought.
Just then I looked up and happened to see on the wall a poster I had never noticed before. It showed a shooting star and read, “If you reach for the stars, you might at least grab a piece of the moon.”
Realizing it was time to throw off my shy mask and show the world who I really was, I said firmly, “Okay, I’ll try my best, Mrs. Sally!”
In the following five months, Mrs. Sally taught me how to put on makeup, memorize lines, create costumes and so on.

【答案】One possible version:
The big day arrived at last. I hurried all the way to the backstage of the school hall, where cameras were lighting up in all directions. Looking back on the five months of hard work, I found a new and confident person inside me. I eventually became a much more daring and outgoing person than I had been before. However, when I was about to go onto stage, my heart kept pounding so hard that my throat tightened and my knees felt weak.
At the moment, Mrs. Sally noticed my nervousness and approached me. “It doesn’t matter how you do tonight,” she comforted me. “You’ve already shown how wonderful you are.” Looking into Mrs. Sally’s shining blue eyes, I calmed down and then walked onto the stage with her warm words like a ray of sunshine. When I finished my performance, the audience burst into applause. Facing the cheering audience, I knew that it was Mrs. Sally’s encouragement that helped me find the confidence to succeed.
