In a world often filled with uncertainty, one man’s small act of kindness has caused a wave of generosity, leading to a life-changing moment for a family in need.
It all began when Casey Marlow found himself in a convenience store earlier this week. He was about to purchase a drink when he realized he had left his wallet in the truck. As he went to get it, the man behind him in line, Mario stepped up and paid for his drink.
Grateful for the gesture, Marlow struck up a conversation with him. As they spoke, Marlow learned that the man, despite his generosity, was going through tough times. Mario was living with his family in a motel(汽车旅馆) after being kicked out of their home, but he was working hard to get back on his feet. Yet, in his hardship, he still found the strength to help someone else.
Inspired by Mario’s kindness, Marlow turned to social media to share the story and ask for help. “Even if it’s just a few dollars,” he posted, “ together, we can make a big impact.” What happened next was nothing short of remarkable.
The community, both near and far, united behind to support Marlow’s appeal. Donations began pouring in, each one contributing to a growing fund aimed at helping Mario and his family. Within just 24 hours, the total had reached an astonishing $ 35, 000.
“ I was just the messenger, ”Marlow modestly explained. “ All I did was ask for help because I couldn’t do it alone. We all came together and helped Mario out. We are all overwhelmed to be able to help change this man and his family’s life. ”
What began as a simple act of kindness in a convenience store has grown into a powerful reminder of the impact that compassion(同情) and community can have. Mario and his family now have a brighter future ahead, thanks to the kindness of a stranger and the generosity of many.

Earth’s atmosphere contains an ocean of water, enough liquid to fill Utah’s Great salt Lake 800 times. Drawing some of that is seen as a potential way to provide clean drinking water to billions of people globally who face long-term shortages.
Existing technologies for atmospheric water harvesting(AWH) are loaded with numerous downsides associated with size, cost and efficiency. But new research from university of Utah engineering researchers has generated insights that could improve efficiency and bring the world one step closer to tapping the air as a cooking water source in dry places.
The study uncovers the first-of-its-kind compact rapid cycling fuel-fired AWH device. This two-step prototype(雏形) relies on adsorbent materials that draw water molecules(分子) out of non-humid air, then applies heat to release those molecules into liquid form, according to Sameer Rao, senior author of the study.
“Hygroscopic(吸湿的) materials essentially have preference to water. They absorb water wherever you go. One of the best examples is the stuff inside diapers(尿布),”said Rao, who happens to be the father of an infant son. “We work with a specific type of hygroscopic material called a metal organic framework. Just a gram of this material holds as much surface area as two football fields. So just a little material can get a lot of water. ”
In the device’s second step, the water is deposited into liquid by applying heat using a standard-issue camping stove. This works because of the heat-release nature of its water- collecting process. “As it collects water, it’s releasing little bits of heat. And then to turn around that, we add heat,”Rao said. “We just put a flame right under here, anything to get this temperature up. And then as we increase the temperature, we rapidly release the water molecules. Once we have a really humid airstream, that makes condensation at environmental temperature much easier.”
New technologies are used for atmospheric water harvesting, which is more easily accomplished when the air is humid, but none has resulted in equipment that can be put to practical use in dry environments. Rao believes his device can be the first.
28. What is the main purpose of the text
A. To explain the process of AWH. B. To discuss the challenges of AWH.
C. To introduce a new device for AWH. D. To compare different AWH technologies.
29. What can we know from Rao’s words
A. The device needs a lot of the special material.
B. The material used in the device is very special.
C. Hygroscopic materials are widely used in daily life.
D. The material in diapers is the same as that in the device.
30. What does the underlined word “ condensation” mean in paragraph 5
A. The process of heating something. B. The process of freezing something.
C. The process of turning gas into liquid. D. The process of making something dry.
31. What is Sameer Rao’s attitude to his device
A. Neutral. B. Hopeful. C. Ambiguous. D. Disapproving.
D
Did you know that after a stroke(中风), nearly one-third of survivors face a challenging condition known as “neglect” This neurological disorder significantly impacts a stroke survivor’s recovery, affecting their motor skills and critical perceptual domains(感知域), such as spatial awareness.
Visuospatial(视觉空间) Neglect (VSN) is particularly notable, where patients struggle to identify objects in areas of their visual field, often on their left side. This often leads to increased risks of falls and heightened caregiver stress.
Traditional rehabilitation can be tough on both patients and therapists, leading to issues with patient and diagnostic challenges for therapists. The lack of a standardized treatment for VSN worsens this issue, leading to recent research efforts focused on developing treatment solutions.
Two recent studies have pointed out the promise of using music therapy and virtual reality (VR) as potential treatment experiences for VSN patients.
In music therapy, a practice known as Musical Neglect Training(MNT) involves patients actively participating in musical exercises. In these exercises, patients are instructed to play musical patterns on different musical instruments, which extend to the neglected visual field. A music therapy study showed promising findings in this area.
VR has also shown promise in this area. Recent studies have demonstrated its effectiveness in the diagnosis and assessment of VSN, as well as in motivation. The studies highlight core advantages of VR treatment for VSN, including customizable treatment experiences and immersive patient experiences.
Additionally, a research team found evidence of an increase in brain activity regions of neglect patients after using a VR intervention, linked to improvements in their saccadic eye movements-a rapid eye glance from one point to another.
Another study currently in peer review found promising results in VSN patients, engagement and positive feedback while using a custom-made VR application for treatment. In addition, they found one patient’s task response time might have improved considerably with the use of audio cues. These studies provide glimpses into the future of tailored rehabilitation and are promising in the ongoing development of rehabilitation treatments for stroke and neglect.
32. What is difficult for patients with VSN commonly to do
A. Making clear sounds and express themselves clearly.
B. Getting along well with their doctors and their families.
C. Identifying objects on their left side of their visual field.
D. Moving around freely and naturally as normal people do.
33. What can we infer from paragraph 3 about traditional treatment for VSN
A. It leads to bad relation between patients and doctors.
B. It only worsens the patients’ health condition eventually.
C. Traditional treatment for VSN is out of date nowadays.
D. This treatment is still not so perfect for patients with VSN.
34. What is music therapy intended to do
A. To get patients to take more physical sports.
B. To restore patients, neglected visual areas.
C. To play different kinds of musical instruments.
D. To help patients learn to enjoy different music.
35. What does the last paragraph indicate
A. The author is confident about the future of VSN treatment.
B. VR treatment for VSN patients has been put into operation.
C. More and more people are recovering from VSN in the world.
D. VSN can be cured by using a particularly made VR application.

阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
A Week under MY Son’s Roof
In every family, there eventually comes a time when the power shifts and the child becomes the one calling the shots. For me, this moment arrived during a recent visit to Los Angeles to stay with my eldest son, our longest visit since he moved away in 2014. A whole week under his roof!
“ Dad, don’t leave the water running when you brush your teeth, ” Nathaniel scolded(责骂) on our first night, the same he said as I washed my hands. All right, I figured, this is California, where drought is a concern. But I was also caught taking extra paper towels to clean the kitchen counter and was told to use the dishcloth instead, which seemed dirty.
More commands followed. Don’t wear a neck warmer when walking the dogs in the morning. It will warm up when we get to the park. Why drink so much soda water One pump of hand sanitizer is enough. And is it necessary to shower before our trip to Topanga
At first I wondered how I’d raised such a tyrant(暴君). Then I remembered how often I threw the golden rule of parenting at Nathaniel and his siblings(兄弟姐妹) when they were young. “Someday, you’ll have a home of your own and can live however you want,” I’d say. “Until then, you’ll have to do as we ask.” An offensive order, but it did get the occasional juice glass in the dishwasher or sweatshirt off the floor. Now it was pay back time.
I recall feeling frustrated by my father’s constant instructions and interventions as I grew up. He would always straighten my collar, close the shutters in my room at dusk, or warn me about moving a glass of water away from the toaster to prevent a fire. It was a humbling experience, but also a reminder of the cyclical(循环的) nature of parenting.

1. 续写词数应为 150左右 ;
