A myth is something that is not correct, but many people believe that there are a lot of myths about the human brain.
One of the biggest myths is that we only use 10 percent of our brains. The next part of the myth is that if we can learn to use the rest of our brains, then we’ll be much smarter. People say this all the time, but it’s absolutely (绝对地) not true! The truth is that although we don’t know everything about the human brain, we know that each part of it has an important function (功能). Modern scientists think the “10 percent myth” is ridiculous (荒谬的).
The other most popular myth is about being “right-brained” or “left-brained”. According to this myth, people who use the right side of their brains are better at math and science. This is as popular as the “10 percent myth”, and it’s also wrong. In 2013, a study from an American their brains are more artistic and creative. People who use the left side of university examined the right brain and left brain myth. According to the study, we use both sides of our brains equally (相等地).
It’s true that we use different parts of our brains for different things. We use our left side for language more, and our right side when we need to pay attention. But there is no evidence (证据) that creative people use the right side more or that scientific people use the left side more.
We’ve talked about myths, so let’s look at a few interesting facts about the brain. First of all, the brain feels no pain. Second, about 75 percent of the brain is made of water. It’s also the fattest organ in your body. Here’s another interesting fact about the brain. Around the time you turn 18 years old, it stops growing.

Experiencing one day in London
So this was an English park. This was an English… summer I was shaking with cold! It didn’t see warm enough. Perhaps I should explain. I’m from Brisbane in Australia. But today I was visiting my family in Britain. And they were taking me out to enjoy London.
“What a fine, bright day!” my Aunt Jess said happily. I nodded and smiled politely. In Britain it’s not polite to disagree, especially about the weather. But inside I was thinking: It looks awful. Brisbane’s winter is warmer than British summer!
The day had started with the promise of sunshine. But, as our picnic went on, it turned darker. Storm clouds suddenly covered the sky. British people often describe their weather as “four seasons in one day”. But for me, one season was missing from that day: summer!
Aunt Jess said, “When I was young, the summers were much longer and sunnier. I don’t remember a single bad summer’s day in the 60s!” Weather records show that she was wrong. But again I did not disagree. My cousin Jane said, “Maybe we will have a white Christmas this year.” That would be wonderful, but I doubted (怀疑) it. After all, it has only snowed at Christmas five
times in the last fifty years.
Suddenly it turned windy. A heavy rain began to fall. We ran to hide from the rain. But my “summer” dress still got very wet. As I watched the rain beating down, I began to day dream. I dreamed about long, hot summer days in Brisbane.
“Well,” said Aunt Jess, “we had a few good hours. And at least, the weather gives us something to talk about…” I smiled politely once more, but had a secret thought. Yes, let’s talk about my English relatives moving Australia!

Dear Peter,
I’m happy to get your e-mail. Now let me give you some advice.
First, I advise you to finish your homework before you hang out with your friends. If you just want to play and don’t do your homework, your parents will be angry. Second, if you truly look forward to buying an iPad, you’ll probably ask your parents for help. But remember you should use the iPad in a right way. Don’t spend too much time on it. Third, if you still don’t know what to do to help some people in need, I think going to an old people’s home will be a good idea. You can also help look after your neighbor’s kids.
I hope my advice can help you and you’ll have a wonderful holiday.
Yours,
Li Hua
