There was once a 63-year-old woman. She was small and thin, with a slightly hunched (弓起的) back. She walked all the way from New York City to Miami, Florida. It was a long and unimaginable (不可想象的) journey for most people. Every step took great effort (努力), but she kept going and made it.
The old woman started the journey because her life was filled with regrets. When she was young, she was busy taking care of her family. She missed many beautiful moments in life.
Her husband passed away early, and her children seldom visited her. During the lonely years, she thought about the places she wanted to visit when she was young but never did. Miami was one of those places. She and her husband had once promised to go to see the sea there together. When she turned 63, she realized that if she didn’t go now, there might never be another chance.
In Miami, a curious reporter interviewed her. Although she looked tired, her eyes were bright. The reporter wondered whether the unknown fears, tiredness and difficult environment during the hard journey had ever worried her. And how did she get the courage (勇气) to keep going on such a long journey
The old woman smiled, with a twinkle in her eyes. “Taking one step doesn’t need courage. That’s what I did. I took one step first, then another, and then another, and here I am.”

People often set many alarms to wake themselves up for fear of oversleeping. However, this can be bad for one’s health because it makes sleep quality (质量) poorer, according to Brandon Peters, a doctor from Virginia Mason Franciscan Health in Seattle, US.
A good sleep happens in cycles (周期), according to Medical News Today. Each cycle has four stages (阶段). During stage one, we go into a light sleep. Our body relaxes and our heartbeat (心跳) slows. As we fall deeper into sleep, stage two begins. Our eyes stop moving and our body temperature drops. Then comes the third stage which is the deepest sleep and also the hardest for people to wake up from. Last is the fourth stage, known as rapid eye movement sleep (快速眼动睡眠), or REM sleep. Our eyes move rapidly from side to side during this stage. At the same time, our breathing picks up and our heartbeat rises.
REM sleep is very important because most of our dreams take place during it. This allows our brain to process emotions (情绪). REM sleep also helps the brain turn the new knowledge learned during the day into memories. When we get enough REM sleep, it is easier to focus on studying the next day, said the National Sleep Foundation of the US.
Since REM sleep mostly takes place in the last hours of a night’s sleep, it is a bad idea to disrupt (打扰) it with alarms ringing one after another.
“My general advice is that you set one alarm,” said Alicia Roth at the Cleveland Clinic in the US. She also suggested that people try alarms that use light, not sound, to wake up, according to CNN.
31. In which stage do people sleep the deepest
A In the first stage. B. In the second stage. C. In the third stage. D. In the fourth stage.
32. What happens to our body during REM sleep

33. If we get enough REM sleep, we are likely to ________.
A have fewer bad dreams B. improve our learning
C. be more emotional D. wake up more easily
34. What does Alicia Roth probably agree with
A. It is important to wake up naturally.
B. Setting many alarms can help prevent oversleeping.
C. Sound alarms are better than light alarms.
D. It’s better to avoid disturbing REM sleep with sounds.

A. Nature. B. Sports. C. Business. D. Health.

We use bricks (砖) to make houses on Earth, but what about building things on the moon Well, you use “lunar bricks”, of course!
Scientists at the Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) have developed “lunar bricks”. They hope to use the bricks to build a base (基地) on the moon.
To make the bricks, the scientists used a lunar soil simulant (模拟月壤). The bricks are three times stronger than normal concrete (混凝土) bricks or red bricks. They also have mortise and tenon joint structures (榫卯结构), which were used in ancient Chinese buildings. This makes it possible to simply put these bricks together, just like Lego.
Lunar soil isn’t the same everywhere on the moon. The scientists had tested five different kinds of simulated (模拟的) lunar soil and used three ways to harden them. This helped them choose the best materials for making the bricks.
The lunar bricks need to be tested well before being used because the moon has an extreme (极端的) environment Quakes (月震) often happen there, and cosmic radiation (宇宙辐射) is high. It gets as hot as 180 ℃ during the day and as cold as -190 ℃ at night.
The lunar bricks was sent to China’s space station on the Tianzhou 8 spacecraft on November 15, 2024. There, scientists will check how well the bricks do in space.
The first brick is expected to return to Earth by the end of 2025. China hopes to build a lunar research station between 2028 and 2035.
36 The lunar bricks are developed to build a base on the moon.
37. The mortise and tenon joint structures make lunar bricks lighter.
38. The researchers tested different kinds of lunar soil simulant in order to find materials.
39. It is too hot during the day and too cold at night on the moon.
40. The lunar bricks have been used to build a lunar research station.

Everyone of us has a “superpower”. A person doesn’t need to speak but we can tell if he or she is happy, angry or sad. We do so by looking at his or her face.
The human face has 43 muscles (肌肉). Together, they make thousands of expressions. These expressions show our emotions and help us socialize with others. Some expressions last less than half a second. They are called micro expressions (微表情). They can better show what people think and how they feel.
When people are nervous, blood goes to the cheeks and they can have red cheeks. Liars usually raise their eyebrows (眉骨). They also blink (眨眼) a lot and close their eyes. Closing the eyes helps a liar to make up his or her story. When a person has a fake (假的) smile, his or her eyes don’t change. A real smile often makes the eyes become smaller. This is because more muscles are used when a person is happy.
Do animals have expressions Watch the dogs. When the owner blames (责怪) the dog for its mistakes, the dog shows a special expression. Many people think the dog feels sorry. The truth is it is sad about being blamed. When the horse shows its teeth, it looks like it is happy. But in fact, it feels that its body aches and needs a rest.

But when Tom was about to put the letter into an envelope. Jerry stopped him and asked, “What are you going to do with it ”
“Send it,” Tom replied.

But others disagree with them. They think that using mobile phones is a waste of time. People say they use them to get information. But they may get distracted by many other things. It’s not good for their mind and body, such as hurting eyes, making some bad friends.
