Jeff and Linda Lohr were living in Schwenksville, Pennsylvania, in 2007, when a young Ghanaian carpenter named Abu emailed to ask if he could join Jeff’s woodworking school.
Abu wanted to start a woodworking program to help children learn how to make a living. After much back and forth, the Lohrs raised money for travel costs and obtained a visa for Abu. He arrived in April 2008 on a three-
month scholarship to train with Jeff and live in their farm home.
The Lohrs planned to train Abu on Western woodworking machinery and then ship whatever machinery they could afford to Ghana. However, as they learned more about rural Ghana, they soon realized this wouldn’t work. The machine tools were expensive in America and many of them wouldn’t be bought in Ghana. So they took Abu to a local building materials market and asked him to point out materials and tools he could access in Ghana, and that led to the creation of what Abu called “Mr. Jeffry’s Third World Machine Shop”. Abu took the parts of the first one back to Ghana to use as a model for building others. Under Abu’s guidance, two teams of carpenters would build two machines each month.
In 2008, Abu was offered nine acres of land and granted permission to build the first training center. Because transporting everything by hand over a small stream was time-consuming, the Ghanaians engineered and built a bridge, entirely by hand. The blocks to build the training center were handcrafted. However, they completed it within several months.
Now the training center teaches woodworking, fabric arts, and food preservation to rural Ghanaians. So far, it has trained thousands of Ghanaians. “We have built bridges, fixed roads, and repaired buildings all with volunteer local labor. The concept here is not charity,” Jeff said. “It’s just helping them help themselves. Education is really the tool for getting peace in the world in my mind.”

Dogs may possess a deeper understanding than what they outwardly exhibit. Pet dogs’ brains displayed neural (神经的) signs of surprise when their owners showed them an unexpected toy. The findings suggest that dogs create mental concepts of objects.
“Anyone who has ever interacted very much with a dog probably is not so surprised to know that dogs understand that their speech is referring to at least a few common objects,” says scientist Ellen Lau. But the majority may have assumed that this sort of “understanding” is just a simple, almost automatic response to the pronunciation of the term.
Some unusually gifted dogs have extraordinary vocabulary. A famous dog named Chaser knew more than 1,000 words for toys, for instance. In an experiment, the dog heard a recording of its owner’s voice saying the word for a toy. Then, it saw the owner appear in a window holding up a toy. Electrodes (电极) on its head picked up stronger brain signals when an unexpected toy was presented instead of the one named by the owner.
The researchers think the signal indicates surprise and suggests that the dog had already formed a mental concept and expectation of the toy after hearing that word. In fact, the signal was especially strong for a mismatch involving words that the dogs reportedly knew very well. “That suggests that it is really about understanding and knowledge of the word,” Marianna Boros, the co-author of the study, says.
Humans have this surprise signal, too. It’s called the N400 effect, and it occurs in the brain just after something unexpected happens. “There have been now thousands of human studies investigating and using this N400 effect,” Lau says. But there has been no evidence of a similar signal in dogs, until now.
This neural signal of surprise in the dogs’ brains wasn’t shocking. Scientists have previously found clues about how dogs process meaningful words, but the findings give a glimpse into the mental lives of dogs that didn’t exist before. They understand more signs than they show.

For decades, “simpler is better” has been accepted as a universal truth in marketing. Nick Light, assistant professor of marketing at the UO Lundquist College of Business, has tested that assumption. He found that most consumers prefer offerings that appear to be easy to use and understand. However, pushing simplicity can have a hidden, costly downside.
“Simplicity is not a silver bullet,” Light said. This method might work for established companies with track records to back up their claims. But it can be risky for a start-up with no history or a company in a complicated market category where failures or breakdowns are more common.
Light’s earlier experience stimulated his interest in the study. He was a marketing manager at a direct-to-consumer mattress(床垫) company. With the catchword “one perfect mattress”, the company offered only one mattress model shipped directly to the consumer’s door, dramatically simplifying the mattress-buying process. “Some customers calling with even minor problems such as a slight discoloration in the material, would get really angry,” Light said. “They would say things like, “I don’t understand what’s so difficult about this,’ even when producing and shipping mattresses are quite complex. These customers were getting overly upset because the product and process had been labeled as simple.”
The study also showed that consumers judged the complexity of brands or products based on their mental connections. For example, when study participants viewed advertisements for two different companies, they formed mental pictures of the simplicity or complexity of the brand depending on how plain or busy the art was and the details provided in each ad.
Light also looked into product quality and customer opinions and found that consumers are less likely to recommend simpler brands after failures compared to more complex brands. Therefore, the lesson for marketers is
to be more careful about building branding and advertising strategies around simplicity, because they could easily backfire if the product or service fails to deliver.
