Going into my final year of graduate school, I decided to ask my adviser for feedback on areas where I could improve. I’ve always admired my adviser’s honesty, and I anticipated receiving a mix of positive comments and suggestions for growth. But I wasn’t prepared for how one small remark would completely shift my thinking about myself and my future career.
It felt encouraging to receive high marks for leadership, communication, and my ability to work independently. But when it came to the ability to notice specific information or data, she gave me an “OK.” As a scientist, it was disheartening to hear that I was only “OK” at something I had worked so hard on.
At first, I struggled with this. But the more I thought about it, the more I saw that maybe she was right. Yes, I can dig into the data when I need to. But it’s true that focusing on the tiny details isn’t something I naturally excel at, or even enjoy as much as my classmates do. And instead of being just a weakness, it could be a clue to my strengths.
The other side of an “OK” attention to details is that I love looking at the bigger picture, connecting ideas, and telling a story. Throughout my life, and especially in graduate school, I have always been most energized by the early stages of a project when I generated ideas and applied new concepts, and my enthusiasm often waned (减少)when it came to long-term performance.
I knew all this at some level. Still, hearing it from my adviser pushed me to really rethink my strengths and interests, which in turn opened up a whole new way of thinking about my career.
After I finished my Ph. D., being honest with myself about my strengths and weaknesses ultimately led me to my job in health care communications. In my current role, I help the companies tell their stories. I take complex scientific information and turn it into something clear and engaging that non-scientists can understand. Don’t get me wrong; it still requires attention to details.
Looking back, I’m so grateful for that remark from my adviser, painful though it was, because it set my career on a new track.
4. What does the author need to improve according to her adviser
A. Focus on details.
B. Relationship with others.

D. Communication skills.
5. How was the author affected by the adviser
A. She fell into self-doubt.
B. She began to reflect on herself.
C. She gave up some impractical ideas.
D. She got down to studying a new field.
6. Which word can best describe the author
A. Reliable. B. Considerate.
C. Difficult. D. Sensible.
7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To honor an impressive adviser.
B. To tell of her personal experience.
C. To recall the journey of her struggle.
D. To encourage readers to make a change.

On a recent afternoon in northern Albania, workers gathered armfuls of freshly-cut plants covered in yellow flowers, leaving them to dry in the sun. This was no ordinary harvest, however. The farm is both a mine, growing plants that store nickel (镍) in their leaves and stems, and a carbon sink, its soil spread with crushed rocks that remove carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere.
The idea of mining with plants isn’t new. But Metalplant is combining this “phytomining (植物采矿)” with a method of removing CO2 from the atmosphere, called enhanced rock weathering, which involves spreading rock dust on fields. This dust can both catch CO2 and increase the nickel picked up by the plants.
Demand for nickel to make electric vehicle (EV) batteries is forecast to double to more than 6 million tonnes (吨) per year by 2040. Yet mining and refining it is environmentally destructive and, depending on where and how it is produced, mining a tonne of nickel generates between 10 and 59 tonnes of CO2. Phytomining for nickel avoids these problems.
However, phytomining only works where there is a lot of the metal in the soil. Albania is attracting interest due to the high nickel content of its soils: the rocks that compose its mountains are made up of a mineral called olivine (橄榄石), which contains too little nickel for conventional mining, but enough to build up in certain plants.
In June, Metalplant workers harvested 3 hectares of O. decipiens (a kind of plant), and this area was then spread with a few dozen tonnes of olivine dust. “Yet the amount of nickel that could feasibly (可行地) be produced is too small to compete with conventional mining,” says Marie Odile Simonot at the University of Lorraine in France. “Any environmental benefit also depends on the way it is done. Expanding phytomining farms on ecologically sensitive land could have the same environmental impacts as any other form of agriculture, for instance. Metalplant’s approach — using olivine dust from a nearby mine — won’t completely replace conventional mining.”
8. What is special about the farm in northern Albania
A. It combines mining with CO2 removal.
B. It grows flowers that are particularly bright.
C. It produces the highest quality nickel in the world.
D. It harvests plants that absorb large amounts of CO2.
9. What role does rock dust play in Metalplant’s approach
A. Improving soil quality.
B. Providing nutrients for the plants.
C. Promoting the plants’ nickel intake.
D. Serving as a protective cover for the soil.
10. What does paragraph 3 mainly want to tell us
A. The great need for nickel.
B. The main reasons for phytomining.
C. The practical application of phytomining.
D. The disadvantages of conventional mining.
11. What’s Marie’s attitude towards phytomining
A. Uncaring. B. Favorable.
C. Tolerant. D. Doubtful.
D
Some scientists fear researchers are misusing ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence(AI)chatbots to produce scientific literature, citing a rise in questionable AI words in published papers. Some of these remarks — such as the careless inclusion of “certainly, here is a possible introduction for your topic” in a recent paper from Elsevier Inc.’s Surfaces and Interfaces — are reasonably obvious evidence that a scientist used an AI chatbot known as a large language model(LLM). But “that’s probably only the tip of the iceberg,” says Elisabeth Bik. A representative of Elsevier Inc. told SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN that the publisher regrets the situation and is investigating how the paper could have “slipped through” the evaluation process.
LLMs are designed to generate text, but what they produce may or may not be accurate. “The problem is that these tools are not good enough yet to trust,” Bik says. They’ll be in what computer scientists call hallucinations: simply put, they make stuff up. “Specifically, for scientific papers,” Bik notes, an AI “will generate references that don’t exist.” So if scientists place too much anaclisis in LLMs, study authors risk putting AI-produced mistakes into their work, mixing more potential for error into the already messy reality of scientific publishing.
Andrew Gray, a librarian and researcher at University College London, recently hunted for AI buzzwords(流行语)in scientific papers using Dimensions, a data-analytics platform that its developers say tracks more than 140 million papers worldwide. He searched for words improperly used by chatbots, such as “intricate” “meticulous” and “commendable”. These indicator words, he says, show the problem more clearly than any “giveaway” AI phrase a careless author might copy into a paper. At least60,000 papers — slightly more than 1 percent of all scientific articles published globally last year— may have used an LLM, according to Gray’ s analysis. Other studies that focused specifically on subsections of science suggest even more reliance on LLMs. One such investigation found that up to 17.5 percent of recent computer science papers exhibit signs of AI writing.
12. Why does the author mention the recent paper from Surfaces and Interfaces
A. To show its popularity.
B. To stress the accuracy of chatbots.
C. To prove the overuse of chatbots in science.
D. To explain the importance of evaluation.
13. What does the underlined word “anaclisis” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Curiosity. B. Research.
C. Time. D. Trust.
14. What does the last paragraph indicate about the use of LLMs
A. It is rare for scientific papers to use LLMs.
B. Computer science papers show obvious signs of AI writing.
C. Using LLMs in scientific papers is the first choice for authors.
D. It is easy for authors to find their mistakes with the help of LLMs.
15. What is the main idea of the text
A. The development of large language models in recent years.
B. The rise of AI chatbots in scientific literature is uncontrollable.
C. The potential risks of relying on AI chatbots for scientific literature.
D. The publishers are responsible for the misuse of AI chatbots in literature.

In a small and peaceful town, there lived a boy named Joey, who was different from the other kids.
At school, when the teacher asked simple maths questions, Joey would often stare blankly at the blackboard, his brows knitted in confusion as he tried to make sense of the numbers. His answers, more often than not, were incorrect, and it didn’t take long for a few classmates to start laughing at him. During art class, while other kids were creating vivid masterpieces with ease, Joey’s drawings looked more like scribbles (涂鸦). The moment he showed his work, whispers spread across the room: “Look at what Joey drew! It’s so childish!”
Yes, Joey had some intellectual disabilities, which made it hard for him to learn and communicate like his peers. Because of this, Joey suffered some prejudice, but he never minded that and always wore a smile on his face.
One day in the PE class, when the teacher grouped the students, Tom, who was assigned to Joey’s group, argued that Joey always misjudged the ball and would cause the team to lose possession. “Why is Joey even on our team He’s so useless!” Tom added. With a calm yet firm voice, the teacher said, “Tom, we’re all here to learn and improve. Joey might struggle a bit more than the rest of you, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t deserve a chance to play.” Although the PE teacher forced them into the same group, Joey was still not well treated.
After school, as fate would have it, dark clouds gathered overhead, and within minutes, a downpour began. The streets of the small town were quickly slick(滑的)with rainwater, and people ran hurriedly, seeking shelter. Joey was making his way home when suddenly he heard a loud noise.

【答案】Dear Chris,
I had an exciting experience last Friday. Our music teacher organized a special class about Beijing Opera! We learned to sing a piece from a famous Beijing Opera. The melodies were quite complex, but the teacher made the lesson really engaging and taught us line by line patiently.
The experience was enlightening. I have gained a deeper appreciation for the art form and its unique combination of singing, dancing, and acrobatics. It’s rich in history and expressive in delivery. I can’t wait to learn more about it!
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】On the street, an old woman fell down, groceries scattering (散落) all around her. She was struggling to get up and her cries for help were drowned by the sound of the pouring rain. Without hesitation, Joey rushed over. Kneeling beside her, he gently asked, “Ma’am, are you okay Let me help you.” Joey carefully lifted the woman up and then gathered her scattered groceries, making sure nothing was left behind. The woman thanked Joey, her voice shaky but filled with gratitude, “You’ve saved me from a lot of trouble on this terrible day.” Joey beamed at her, his smile brightening up the gloomy afternoon.
The next day at school, word of Joey’s heroic act spread like wildfire. The classmates who had once excluded Joey were now looking at him with newfound respect. Tom, who treated Joey rudely in the PE class, apologized to Joey for what he said. From that day on, the atmosphere in the classroom transformed completely. Joey was no longer the outsider; instead, he was welcomed into every game and every conversation. His kindness had not only won over his peers but had also taught them a valuable lesson about acceptance and the true measure of a person— that it lies not in academic prowess or athletic skills but in the goodness of one’s heart.
