Does your class use email Have you ever tried to write a story for the school newspaper and send it in by email Email is used for everything, and it makes life easier. But do you know who invented it
The man who invented email was Ray Tomlinson, a US engineer. He sadly passed away in 2016 at the age of 74. Back in 1971, Tomlinson was working on a way to send messages from one computer to another. He needed a symbol to separate users 'names from their computers' names. The "@ " sign was not commonly used and was on all keyboards, making it the perfect choice.
Tomlinson said, "The '@' sign made the most sense. It showed where the user was... at." For example, "Alex@schoolnewssite" would reach Alex at the school newspaper's website. This was the early form of email.
Interestingly, Tomlinson didn't remember the first message he sent. It was probably something simple like "QWERTYUIOP", the first row of letters on a keyboard.
Today, the "@ " sign is also used in many places in addition to email. Social media like Weibo and WeChat use it at the beginning of users' names. So, even if we don't use email someday. Tomlinson's invention will still be with us. He not only changed the way we communicate but also saved the "@ "sign for new uses.
In short, Tomlinson's invention has had a huge influence on our communication. It has made it possible for people around the world to send messages quickly and easily.
