Ring! Ring! I quickly got dressed and went downstairs. I kept telling myself, “I must finish my first novel! I must do it!”
But the thought of reading English made me break out in a cold sweat.“It’s so unfair!” My thoughts grew more and more intense. Then, I heard some footsteps. It was mom.“Are you okay, darling ” she spoke in her soft but strict voice. In a fit of anger, I shouted, “NO! I never wanted to learn English!” Seeing her shocked and sad face, I immediately regretted it, ran back to my room and locked myself in it.
After a long time, I opened my door and was surprised to discover mom standing in front of me. She said she should never have pushed me so hard. This was the first time my mom had said sorry to me. I froze and was shocked but I felt my mom’s love and her hopes for me to become a good student. So I decided to run downstairs again and pick up my first novel, Charlotte’s Web.
As a classic children’s novel, the story is a heartwarming tale of friendship and loyalty, which centered around a young pig named Wilbur and his unlikely friendship with a spider, Charlotte. Although reading it in English was a bit of challenge for me, I was still touched by the book. The bond between Wilbur and Charlotte shows the importance of helping others. It reminds me of those moments when my mom was supporting me during my learning journey. Besides, Wilbur’s journey highlights finding self-worth.
Reading this book not only increased my reading confidence but also made me understand that everyone has different sides and can change with love and care.

A. East or west, home is the best.
B. Mother’s love is the paradise of a kid.
C. Lose your temper; lose your family.
D. Choose a book as you choose a friend.

Have you taken a gap day before It’s a new concept on social media recently, different from a gap year. A gap day means an extremely brief period of relaxation and escape from everyday routine. After resting, people will continue to bury themselves in the busy pace of normal life.
Apart from gap days, other similar expressions have made a hit on the Internet, like city walk, dazi and so on. This growing trend of creating new phrases for something otherwise ordinary and common has caused heated discussion.
Some people think these kinds of new phrases better please people’s mindsets, showing their enthusiasm. “For example, the common expression taking a walk is neutral (中性的). Now city walk is the positive version of it, meaning ‘to explore the city with a curious mind’,” Zhou Yaokai, an 18-year-old from China West Normal University, said. “It’s the same with gap day. Instead of lying flat, people are actively trying to balance their stress and life, which is a good approach.”
Others disagree, however, and think that it’s simply just a kind of “sugaring up”, satisfying one’s need for showing off. For example, city walk is the same as taking a walk basically. But by calling it a city walk, people feel like they are doing something fancier than it actually is, said Wu Ruilin, an 18-year-old from Chengdu. He is concerned that the promotion of such fancy phrases may cover the risks behind it, such as security. For example, as the term dazi gains popularity on social media, some young people are searching for dazi in different life aspects that are normally enjoyed alone or with close friends, like traveling and games. “They may have forgotten and ignored that most dazi are just strangers who share similar interests. That may bring problems for us,” said Wu.
Despite different views, they have already taken root in our daily lives. So what we need to do is keep a level head and don’t overemphasize them.
8. What can be concluded about gap day from the text
A. It refreshes people in busy life.
B. It is a long vacation for people to relax.
C. It went viral several years ago.
D. It is a new lifestyle replacing the old one.
9. Why do people prefer these newly-created phrases
A. They could attract people’s attention.
B. They are neutral and objective.
C. They could rid people of stressful life.
D. They show people’s passion for life.
10. What does the underlined phrase “sugaring up” probably mean
A. Covering something against the truth.
B. Making something look or sound better.
C. Covering something with layers of sugar.
D. Making something easier to understand.
11. What does Wu Ruilin think of the new phrases
A. They may cause people to be over-confident.
B. They are useful for people to show their creativity.
C. They are fancier phrases than they actually are.
D. They may mislead people and bring potential risks.

Food waste is one of Hong Kong’s most serious issues, causing the city to overflow with not only non-biodegradable single-use plastics and other non-recyclable goods but also uneaten food. According to the Hong Kong Environment and Ecology Bureau, up to 40% of the food consumed in the city is thrown away, resulting in an estimated 3,500 tonnes of food waste each day. The problem of food waste goes way beyond Hong Kong, with significant economic and environmental impact worldwide.
But what if this food waste is turned into clothes dye (染料) Hong Kong-based company Dyelicious, is tackling the city’s food waste problem by transforming it into rich colors through a process known as natural food dyeing. Unlike a typical clothing factory, which may emit harmful substances into rivers and oceans, the company claims that its workshops use kitchen waste to produce colors that degrade naturally and do not pollute the environment.
Since 2017, Dyelicious has hosted almost 900 workshops, attracting 10,000 participants and transforming 700 tonnes of food waste from landfills in Hong Kong. In the workshops, they teach people how to dye different things like clothes, hats, and bags with dyes made from leftover foods such as blue color from red cabbage, brown from tea and coffee, purple from sweet potato and more.
Dyelicious co-founders, Eric Cheung and Winnie Ngai, came up with the idea 12 years ago. Eric was motivated to investigate how food waste might be used to color cloth after spilling curry on a white shirt and being unable to remove the yellow mark.
Dyelicious has worked with well-known businesses looking to reduce their carbon footprints, sourcing waste from Adidas, Zara, Towngas, Starbucks, and Calbee. In addition, the company works with schools to replace chemical paints with environmentally friendly alternatives and organizes workshops for families around Hong Kong.
Food waste is a global issue. Thankfully, innovative solutions-based companies like Dyelicious are dealing with the food waste problem and up-cycling them into something useful. People can also take some individual measures.
12. What can we learn about Hong Kong in the first paragraph
A. It faces multiple waste problems.
B. It has problems with non-recyclable plastics.
C. Food waste is the most serious issue.
D. 3500 tonnes of food waste is caused per year.
13. What does Dyelicious do to help with food waste
A. It recycles waste from different cities.
B. It turns food waste into natural clothing dyes.
C. It organizes workshops for families worldwide.
D. It teaches people to make clothes with leftovers.

A. Much witness to food waste.
B. Accidental curry spill on his shirt.
C. Knowledge from workshops.
D. Inspiration from clothing factories.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Hong Kong: The Battlefield Against Food Waste.

I am a happy grandma with a strikingly beautiful one-year-old granddaughter who has youthful appearance against dramatically with my own, weathered by 83 years of life’s trials. I also live a satisfying life with a kind-hearted, quick-witted neighbour, Anna, who is always ready to help others.
One peaceful day, I was left alone to look after my granddaughter. The noon sun cast a warm glow. At one o’clock, the baby was peacefully sleeping, while I was enjoying my favorite snack—a banana—and listening to the radio. As I took a bite, four brand-new and costly false teeth unexpectedly broke loose, piercing (扎) through my tongue. At the same time, a piece of banana got stuck in my throat, making it hard for me to take out the teeth, and my tongue started bleeding a lot.
Just to make things even worse, my dear granddaughter began to cry from her bed, wanting to be lifted, fed, and played with. With the banana making its way down my throat, desperation set in. Why not call for an ambulance The answer was simple—I couldn’t speak, trapped in this strange situation.
As the chaos (混乱) unfolded, panic welled up inside me. I kept an eye on the door, hoping for someone to come to our aid soon. The cries of my granddaughter grew louder and louder, and the fear of her face turning blue while I struggled with the banana annoying me. When I looked in the mirror, I saw that my face was changing from purple to a very scary black color.
In these serious situations, the doorbell rang, making me walk slowly and carefully to it, battling to maintain my balance and struggle against the approaching lack of oxygen. With every part of my being, I hoped eagerly for the person on the other side to be a quick thinker, someone who could immediately grasp what’s really wrong of the situation.

【答案】To my relief, a familiar face came into my sight. It was Anna, a quick thinker I had expected. She took one look at me and immediately sensed the gravity of the situation. Without a word, she reached out and carefully removed the false teeth from my tongue, then helped me clear the banana from my throat. I gasped for air, my body trembling with the aftershock of the near-death experience. A sense of relief flooded over Anna’s heart. At the same time, the baby wouldn’t stop crying.
“Stay and rest. I will check the crying baby,” Anna said and hurried to the bedroom. Anna fetched the baby from the bed and held the little one in her arms, gently rocking and comforting her. The baby stopped crying gradually. After a little while, the beautiful little one fell asleep, lying peacefully in Anna’s arms. Seeing the peaceful face, I felt an overwhelming gratitude towards Anna. Anna stayed with us for the rest of the day, ensuring our well-being. That incident made me realize how fortunate I was to have such a wonderful neighbor.
