根据短文内容回答下列问题。
“I like photography because it captures amazing things that you might not see again,” Timmy Watter says. He takes pictures of flowers, sunsets, road signs and ancient buildings. But those photos don’t usually end up in a photo album or on his bedroom walls. Timmy sells them and donates the money to help fight lung cancer (肺癌).
When Timmy was five, he found out that his aunt Bella had lung cancer. He wanted to do something to help her. His first plan was to sell his photos from a vendor’s stand (小贩摊位) in front of his house. “My mum said it wouldn’t work because we were not on a busy street.” Timmy explains.
His next idea was to have an art show. Timmy decorated his home with candles, flowers and white lights. Then he arranged his photos. Timmy’s mum, Sara, remembers: “Everything was filled with photos, including our dining-room table and the living room.” Timmy’s friends, family, and teachers came to the show. He raised more than $300 for cancer research that night. “Aunt Bella was very happy and excited,” Timmy says.
After a local newspaper wrote a story about Timmy’s photos, a volunteer offered to help him set up a website called Camera for a Cure. As more and more people learned about his cause, Timmy began receiving invitations to sell his pictures at art galleries and charity events. Since then, his work has appeared in more than 20 shows. To prepare, he takes lots of photographs. His mum helps him print and frame (给……镶框) them. Then he gives each one a price and decides where it will be displayed. When Timmy is at a show, he greets each customer and talks about what he was thinking when he took his photos. And he always shares facts about lung cancer. Sometimes donations and sales are slow, but Timmy isn’t worried. “It doesn’t matter how much money we made because ________,” he says.
Timmy knows that finding a cure for lung cancer will take time and effort. So, Timmy will keep doing his part by taking and selling photos of the things he sees.

Brooke has just become the 12-ranked rock climbers in the world. One of her coaches explains that she’s so good because she has really strong fingers and the amazing flexibility (柔韧性) of a child. That helps her a lot and means she can do things older climbers have never thought of doing.
Brooke comes from a climbing family. Both her parents are past climbing champions (冠军). Her father stopped climbing some years ago, but her mother, Robyn, who won four world cup titles one after another for four years, is still climbing. She runs a club for young climbers in Colorado, USA and coaches Brooke and her teammates. Sometimes it’s difficult for mother and daughter to work together so closely, but they really respect and trust each other and Brooke says her mum is a great coach. Brooke says that her mother gives her a lot of good advice and is a very important part of her climbing life. Robyn can be strict, but she really loves climbing mountains, and she passes this passion on to her students. Robyn says “Brooke is very determined (坚决的) and is very good at encouraging herself. This helps her when she’s facing the challenges of this difficult sport. She is also very hardworking.” Success in rock climbing is something you have to work at. Food for thought
Recently, community canteens have become popular among young people.
At first, community canteens mostly served old people. As the elderly may face challenges in cooking, and many young people cannot cook, these canteens have become perfect places for the two generations (一代人) to become meal friends.
Getting cheap meals
For only 20 yuan, Fang Wenjing, who works in the training industry (行业) Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, ordered a well-balanced lunch at a community canteen m the city. It included a meat dish, a vegetable dish and a bowl of rice.
“The dishes have a home-cooked taste, just as I expected. The canteen is also clean,” said Fang.
Bringing more surprises
Community canteens meet the dining habits of young people in a number of ways. For example, the vegetarian (素食的) restaurants in Hangzhou have meals including a main dish, a bowl of rice, soup, fruit salad, and a side dish. Hu Yifan, head of the canteen, said 70 percent of its customers are young people.
A canteen at the Zhanongkou Community in Zhejiang province recently introduced “happiness mystery boxes”. They cost just 6 yuan but have one meat dish and a vegetarian dish. To keep what’s inside each box a surprise, stickers are placed over the see-through top to cover the “main dish”. The “mystery boxes” often sell out very quickly.
The canteen in Beijing’s Lugu Community in Shijingshan district even introduced self-service meals. The buffer-style (自助式的) dishes there are priced (定价) at just 2.48 yuan per 100 grams. This price is lower than the restaurants nearby. The canteen has attracted many customers in and out of the neighborhood.
“While it’s a community canteen, it can just as easily be described as a Western restaurant. It is beautifully designed. The environment is fantastic and super clean,” Dazhong Dianping user “Cuzhuangqieluoli 66” commented (评价) on one of the canteens.

“Oh no,” said Addy’s mom. “The subway won’t work.”
“How will we get back to Brooklyn by 5:30 for my audition (试镜) ” Addy cried.

根据短文内容回答下列问题
Ordinary
I know I’m not an ordinary ten-year-old kid though I do ordinary things. And I feel ordinary inside. But I know ordinary kids don’t make other ordinary kids run away screaming in playgrounds. I know ordinary kids don’t get stared at wherever they go. It’s all because of my face.
But I’m kind of used to how I look by now. I know how to pretend I don’t see the faces people make. We’ve all got pretty good at that kind of thing: me, Mom and Dad, Via. Actually, I take that back: Via’s not so good at it. For instance, one time in the playground some older kids made some noises about me. I didn’t hear them myself, but Via heard and she just started yelling at them.
Via doesn’t see me as ordinary. And Mom and Dad don’t see me as ordinary, either. They see me as extraordinary (不凡的). I think the only person in the world who realizes how ordinary I am is me. My name is August, by the way. I won’t describe what I look like. Whatever you’re thinking, it’s probably worse.
Next week I will start fifth grade. Since I’ve never been to a real school before, I have a lot on my mind. Does that mean I can run freely in the football field with other kids I can nearly smell the freedom in the air! But… will the teachers and kids be nice to me Will I have lots of friends … I feel both ________ and ________.
People think I haven’t gone to school because of the way I look, but it’s not that. Do you know how many surgeries (手术) I’ve had Twenty-seven since I was born. The bigger ones happened before I was even four years old, so I don’t remember those. But I’ve had two or three surgeries every year since then. I’m also small for my age, and I have some other health problems that even doctors couldn’t explain, so I used to get sick a lot. That’s why my parents decided it was better if I didn’t go to school. I’m much stronger now, though.

Lucy was born in 1824. As a young girl, she enjoyed exploring the woods near her house and playing with her brothers and sisters.
When Lucy was 7 years old, her father died suddenly, turning her life upside down forever. Lucy’s mother struggled to find the money to feed and clothe her big family. Not many jobs were open to women then. One of the few places women could find paid work was in the water-powered cloth mills. So Mrs Larcom made a difficult decision. She uprooted her family from the quiet village and moved to the busy factory town of Lowell.
In Lowell, Lucy’s older sisters quickly found jobs in the cotton mills. Lucy attended the local elementary school. When Lucy turned 11, her mother told her that it was time for her to follow her older sisters into the cotton mills. The family needs the money Lucy could earn.

Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答下列问题)
In the city center, firefighters quickly get ready when they hear the alarm. Within 60 seconds they are dressed and rushing to a burning building. Even though they know the floors might collapse and the ceilings could fall, they still have to go inside. One wrong decision might mean death.
Who would do a job like that Ask firefighter Sam Telfer. One month ago, he signed up for the job. He used to sit in an office of a software company, but now he is trained to break into rooms full of smoke and heat and come up with a rescue strategy.
“I wanted a job where I could be active, work with my hands, learn new practical skills, and face different challenges every day,” That’s quite an understatement (保守说法) to describe a career that requires you to keep a cool head while fighting against a fire. But Telfer says that flames (火焰) and nerves can be controlled in the same way: through continuous physical and mental training.
Telfer was a runner in college, but now he trains his lungs for dangerous situations instead of races. He has to climb hundreds of steps while wearing 34 kilograms of gear, like oxygen tanks. He also needs to carry unconscious people to safety. No matter what he’s doing, he has to control his breathing. Panic (恐慌) will only waste his limited air supply.
His survival depends on more than just being physically fit. Firefighters need a lot of mental preparation too. When they are not dealing with emergencies, they study many subjects like emergency medicine, structural design, and chemical reactions. They practice quickly assessing (评估) the changing conditions of a fire.
Shifting from a software expert to a first responder was a big change for Telfer. But he says, “I have never once felt that this isn’t the right job for me.” Even though danger might be waiting every day, his body and mind are trained to stay calm, even in the middle of a fierce fire.

Lost luggage
By Tom Church
Two years ago, I went on holiday to Rome with my family. It was a four-hour train journey from our home, and we all helped to plan the trip. We were looking forward to seeing the famous sights! Everything went really well and we had a great time visiting the amazing tourist attractions. I was in charge of taking all the photos with my brand new phone, which had an excellent camera. We stayed in Rome for two weeks, and it was really amazing.
On the train journey back home, I decided to open my backpack, but I couldn’t find it. All my memories of Rome were in that backpack. I was very upset because I’d packed my phone in that backpack, along with my travel diary. I knew I would never see my new phone again. Weeks passed, and then months. At first, I contacted the train company every week, but after some time, it was clear that my backpack was never going to be found. After a while, I forgot all about it.
Last month, I took the train to Florence on a school trip. Unbelievably, my backpack went missing again! I searched and searched, but it was nowhere to be seen! After Rome, I always kept my phone and other important items in my pockets.

I assumed it was my backpack from the school trip. But, this time, there were no precious memories inside. Someone from the train company had found the backpack from Rome in a dusty old cupboard! Did you know that sign language also has “dialects (方言)” Sign language is the main way deaf people communicate. Since they can’t hear, talking to hearing people can be hard. Luckily, sign language interpreters (翻译) are there to help.
Hao Shuxin, 24, sees sign language as her mother tongue, as her parents are deaf. “I picked up sign language before I could even talk,” she recalled. In 2018, she became a sign language interpreter at a law firm in Chongqing. Her work takes her to places like courts, where she interprets for deaf people in legal cases.
Since sign language has fewer words, Hao often meets difficult legal terms (法律条款) that have no direct match. In such situations, she carefully breaks down the meaning for deaf people. There are also grammatical differences between Chinese and sign language. “For example, the words ‘put out a fire’ are signed as ‘a fire put out’ in sign language, as deaf people describe what they see first,’’ Hao explained.
Hao feels ________ at work because accuracy is important in legal interpretations. Her anxiety also comes from the fact that sign language has “dialects”. The same word can be expressed with different hand gestures depending on where a deaf person is from. “For example, people in Inner Mongolia and Chongqing use different gestures for the word ‘true’,” Hao explained. Having travelled to over 30 cities in China, she has learned about the unique (独特的) ways deaf people across the country use sign language.
In her spare time, Hao reads many law books and talks with lawyers and her deaf coworkers to improve her professional skills. “My parents are deaf, so I understand the difficulties faced by the deaf community. I want to do everything I can to help them,” Hao said.

Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答问题)
I was seven when I went to Ireland to spend a week with my grandparents. Grandma welcomed me into their cottage by the sea. It was a strange feeling since I hadn’t seen her for a long time.
The following day, I became ill with a cold. I wanted to explore the cliffs, but had to stay in with Grandma. She was knitting (编织).
“Jane, would you like to learn ”
“Yes.”
She gave me a pair of wooden needles and some soft blue-green wool, the colour of all the seas and oceans. Wrapping her arms around me, Grandma taught me the art of that ancient craft. I watched her move. Her piece was full of beautiful patterns (图案). They were intricate (复杂精细的) .
“How do you know what to do ”
“I have it in here,” she said, pointing to her head. “My mother taught me this pattern. It tells a story of the sea and the people who live near it.”
“The cables are ropes and are wishes of safety for the fishermen off the coasts. These zigzags remind me of the cliff paths I hope you’ll walk with me and pick flowers along the way. And then my favourite is the diamond. It tells me to treasure all in this life. With each stitch (一针), more love is added to the sweater, and the knitter always knows for whom she is knitting.” I loved the way I connected stitches together, one at a time, just like what Grandma said.
All too soon, it was time to go. I wore my sweater Grandma made me, and I gave her the scarf that I had worked so hard on. It showed how I felt about Grandma.
I never saw her again. But she is with me often, not only because ________ but also because ________. Especially when I later passed her gift on to my own daughter. We knit in blues and greens, and talk about the colour of the sea in Ireland. One day we hope to see it together.

Just after 4:00 pm, Addy heard a strange noise. The lights in the museum flickered (闪烁) and then went out. Outside, the sidewalks were crowded, and buses were full. People were shouting, “Blackout! The power is out!”
“Oh no,” said Addy’s mom. “The subway won’t work.”
“How will we get back to Brooklyn by 5:30 for my audition (试镜) ” Addy cried.
Her mom held her hand, and they started walking in the hot August air. She pulled out her phone. “No service,” she sighed. “I hope your sister isn’t stuck underground. Zelda’s normally headed home by now,” Addy’s mom said, looking concerned.
By 5:00, Addy’s feet hurt from walking, but what bothered (使不安) her more was the worry in her head.
Addy and her mom searched for an empty taxi. After six blocks, they finally got one. Just then, Addy saw an elderly man waving his cane (手杖). Although she was eager to get home, Addy suggested giving the man their taxi.
As they kept walking, a man outside a pizza shop gave them free slices. Addy looked at her mom curiously. “No power means no refrigeration, microwaves, or ovens. If this blackout isn’t fixed, a lot of food will go bad.” Suddenly Addy’s headache got worse.

—Adapted (改编) from Wonder by R. J. Palacio
58.In the eyes of strangers, what makes August not ordinary
59.What does the underlined phrase “that kind of thing” refer to
60.According to August, who sees him as ordinary
61.How does August feel about going to a real school soon Complete the sentence.
62.Why didn’t August go to a real school before

Lucy Larcom was one of the most famous poets in America. Today she is best remembered for her book, A New England Girlhood, which tells about her growing-up years as a mill (工厂) girl.
At first, Lucy was excited about becoming a mill girl. Helping to support her family made her feel grown up. Besides, she disliked her school in Lowell because she was afraid of the schoolmaster, who whipped his students with a leather strap when they forgot their lessons. Yet working at the cotton mill was much harder than Lucy had ever imagined.
At the end of her first year in the cotton mill, Lucy got a great chance to go back to school for three months. Those days back at school were a huge success. Her kind and dedicated new teacher made learning a delight. Lucy moved ahead so quickly with her lessons that by the end of her short school term she was ready to progress to high school.
Lucy dreamt of leaving her mill girl days behind to attend high school. However, she knew that her family needed the money, so she returned to the hated mill, feeling 82 . When Lucy turned 21, she finally left the mill for good. Eager to continue her education, she then went to a women’s college. When Lucy finished her training in 1853, she became a teacher at Wheaton School. There she founded a literary society. And her poetry began to appear in newspapers and magazines.
In the book, Lucy emphasized that she never regretted her years working as a mill girl. “I had early been saved from a great mistake; for it is the greatest of mistakes to begin life with the expectation that is going to be easy, or with the wish to have it so.
58.Firefighters have to get ready within sixty seconds after hearing the alarm, don’t they
59.When did Sam Telfer become a firefighter
60.Where did Telfer work before becoming a firefighter
61.What physical training does a firefighter take Give an example.
62.How can a firefighter survive a big fire

Charlie attended regular school in Lincolnshire and was the only visually impaired (VI) student there. Growing up was tough for him, especially since he faced unfriendly comments from others. This experience taught Charlie the importance of good communication with both teachers and peers. He explains, “I can’t see much when reading. Paperwork needs to be much larger, often in size 72 font. It’s not impossible to see, but I need changes in everyday life.”
To help with his education, Charlie used a laptop for schoolwork and had models and graphs to feel and understand during lessons. He also worked closely with teachers to ensure he got the needed help from them in class, like receiving PowerPoint presentations before lessons began.
Despite the help he received, Charlie faced a lot of bullying, especially in secondary school. At the start of Year 10, things got so bad that he didn’t want to go to school. The school even held an assembly to explain his vision problem to other students. For example, his eyes don’t always look where he’s actually focusing, which sometimes led to misunderstandings with classmates.
One particularly difficult situation happened in his science class. Some students thought he was staring at them, even though they were across the room and he couldn’t see them. Because of this, Charlie was required to switch classes but decided against it. He had already established good communication with his science teacher about his needs and thought, “Why should I be the one to move ”

Lost luggage

Two weeks after the Florence trip, I received a phone call from the train company. They told me they had my backpack, and they would send it to the station in my city. I assumed it was my backpack from the school trip. But, this time, there were no precious memories inside. Someone from the train company had found the backpack from Rome in a dusty old cupboard! Everything inside it was safe, and I finally got to share the photos with my family. It was so wonderful to see them.
