Step One Lead-in and assign the task 8’ Choose some videos Ss recorded and play them. Talk about the means of transportation introduced in the videos. Review the key points in the dialogue and lead in the new lesson.
Raise questions: Why do we need different means of transportation What are their advantages and disadvantages Assign the task: Now traffic jam is a big problem for your hometown. The mayor tries to solve the problem, and he wants to know the practical traffic situations in your eyes. Please write an e-mail and introduce the transportation in your hometown. Divide the ss into groups. Discuss about the questions. Fall into 6 groups according to their hometowns. Get to know the task Set a situation and lead in the task. Arouse Ss’ interest to solve problems.
Step two analyze the task 5’ Analyze how to complete the e-mail: read the passage ‘transportation in New York’ and learn from the author. Be clear about what they need to do next: read the passage and learn from it. Help students learn how to solve problems.
Step three While-task 50’ Read the passage: Guide the Ss to Skim the passage and get the rough idea: Transportation in New York; Scan the passage and complete the file and the form Read again and handle the new words & phrases: ‘terrible, improve, ferry, effective, experience, carpooling, way of living, second-hand, get tired of, traffic jam, rush hour, business trip, public transportation, worry about’ Show the sentences: It has been…years since…=……years ago It takes someone some time to do…=someone spend sometime doing… It is/was exciting to do…=to do …is… Paraphrase these sentences and help the Ss understand them. Show the Ss some pictures and ask them to describe the pictures with the sentence structures. Read the advertisements to Get the rough idea; Get the detail information; underline the new words and share information in groups to get their meanings. For difficult ones, look them up in youdao. Read aloud after their phones. Listen carefully when the teacher paraphrases the sentences. Look at the pictures and try to describe them with the help of key words and the sentence structures. Develop the Ss’ autonomous study ability. Look up new words in youdao, study on their own. TA is responsible to supervise groups members work hard and is empowered to ask members to rotate to read the new words to ensure their pronunciation is correct. In case of any mistake occurring, TA should help improve. To paraphrase difficult sentences help Ss improve their listening ability. Scaffold for the Ss and help them learn to use new expressions and sentence structures.
Guide Ss to search Internet for information needed while writing the e-mail. Separate the task: Some members search for the transportation ten years ago; some search for the current transportation; others search for different means of transportation and their strong and weak points. Prepare for the production.
Guide the Ss to list the outlines of their e-mail: paragraphs 1: to introduce why they write the e-mail; 2: transportation ten years ago. 3: current transportation; 4: different means of transportation and their strong and weak points. Work together to make clear about the outlines of their e-mails. Dear Sir, I’m writing to tell you the transportation in our hometown. Ten years ago, we had many, ___ ____ and___. Now we have ___, ___, ____ Bus is…. Light rail is…. Subway… Carpooling is…. Yours Sincerely, …. Help Ss learn to collaborate with each other and make outlines when writing.
Step four: Evaluation 25’ Evaluation criteria: Structure of the e-mail Content: complete and offer detail information. Use the projector to show each group’s e-mail to all. Make comments. Read all the e-mails and learn from each other. Review the structure of an e-mail; Learn to evaluate others.
Guide the Ss to ask questions about other groups’ introduction of transportation in their hometowns. Raise questions on further detail they want. Check if the Ss can get detail information from the introductions.
Step 5 Assign the homework 2’ Read all the e-mails carefully and check if there are mistakes. 2. Perfect the posters made last time with more detail information. Finish homework carefully and hand in on time To consolidate what Ss have learned.
