Participants were randomly allocated to either a month-long mindfulness routine or acontrol group that listened to excerpts(节选)from “Alice in Wonderland”. The mindfulness sessions included relaxation exercises,intention-setting, body scans, breath-focused attention and self-reflection. Surveys conducted before and after the 30-day training period revealed substantial improvements in the mindfulness group:Reduced Depression by 19.2% more than control group;Improved Wellbeing by 6.9% more;Decreased Anxiety by 12.6% more;Attitudes to Health got more Positive by 7.1% over control group;Behavioural Intentions to look after Health increased by 6.5% beyond control group. These benefits were largely maintained after 30 days. Recent Research in Health Psychology: Mindfulness EditionDThe earliest evidence for the use of plants as drugs — possibly for medication or a pick-me-up —— may have been found amid human remains in a 15,000-year-old cave burial inNorth Africa.According to a study published this month in Scientific Reports, researchers discovered ephedra cones (麻黄果) in an ancient burial site at the Cave of Pigeons in northeasternMorocco. Ephedra cones contain ephedrine, a powerful stimulant that speeds up communication between the brain and body.Study lead author Jacob Morales, an archaeobotanist, said the discovery highlights the important role of plantsin Stone A / lifeways. And the researchers think they were consumed during the burial — suggesting the plant waswidely used by the Stone Age people who lived nearby at the time.Today, ephedrine is known for its ability to ease breathing and is recognized as a drug tha can both narrow blood vessels (血管) and reduce certain types of bleeding. But the stimulant can also increase blood pressure and heart rate to dangerous levels. Writings from ancient China show ephedra plants have been used in traditional cold remedies (感冒药) for thousands of years and they are still sold for that purpose in markets in parts of Africa andAsia.Morales says the burial“appears to have held special meaning”, noting that the ancient site also contained evidence of butchered Barbary sheep and the large birds (bustards). “It is possible that ephedra was consumed alongside these special foods during a ritual feast attended by the group and that all these items were subsequently buried in the site with the dead.”“Ephedra is a powerful plant that can act as a strong stimulant as well as having medicinal properties. But it is also potentially dangerous and its use suggests a deep understanding of its effects. It is now impossible to know exactly why prehistoric people inMorocco were consuming the plant. But no type of use should be ignored, particularly given the context of a burial ceremony,” says archaeologist Karen Hardy of the U. K.’ s University of Glasgow.32. Below are three ideas to connect with your future self and enhance present decision-making.36. Researchers have shown that visualizing future events can assist individuals in delaying immediate satisfaction. Interestingly, one doesn't need to consider the future rewards of such delay; just thinking about the future seems to work. For example, if you' re trying to decide whether to start a project now or postpone it , picture yourself in routine future settings like grocery shopping or an upcoming meeting. 37 The more real and vivid the future feels, the more likely you are to make a decision that your future self won't regret.Send a message to your future self. FutureMe. org offers a unique service that allows individuals to send emails to their future selves, prompting them to picture what their future selves will be doing and how they will feelabout the choices made now. 38 What are your hopes for your future self What would your future self thank youfor it you committed yourself to certain goals today Psychologist Hal says that even briefly reflecting on what you'd write in such a letter can make you feel more connected to your future self.Imagine your future self. 39 In one experiment, couch potatoes were asked to imagine either a hoped-forfuture self who engages in regular exercise and enjoys good health or a feared future self who remains inactive and suffers from health problems. Astonishingly, both visualizations motivated them to get off the couch and exercise more frequently over the next two months compared to a control group that did not imagine a future self. To boostyour willpower, imagine two possible future selves: one changing and benefiting and the other unchanging and suffering. 40 This, can inspire positive changes and help learn from past experiences.A.
