One night, while Liu Guoliang was sitting quietly by the fireplace enjoying the warmth of winter, he suddenly got an idea for a problem that he had been thinking about for a long time.
Liu Guoliang, a scientist, discovered that plastic is similar to the fatty acid (脂肪酸) that is used to make soap. He believed that it should be possible to change plastic into the fatty acid, and then into soap. But the problem was that plastic is large, but the fatty acid is much smaller.
That night, he watched the smoke rise from the fire and thought about how smoke was made up of very small pieces. Then he wondered whether burning plastic could work the same way.
Liu and his team built a tool for safely burning plastic and successfully used it to turn plastic into soap. It was the world’s first soap made from plastic.
Liu’s method works on polyethylene and polypropylene, the most common plastics. They make up about half of all plastic waste: nearly 200 million tons a year. The method also works on “end-of-life” plastics that cannot be recycled through usual methods.
Still, Liu doesn’t think this is the best way to avoid plastic pollution. In his opinion, the best method is to reduce the use of plastic as much as possible.
( )31. The obstacle (障碍) to changing plastic into soap is the ______ of the plastic.
A. size B. form C. shape D. color
( )32. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A. What Liu did with plastic.
B. How plastic is changed into soap.
C. How Liu got the idea for his problem.
D. Why plastic can be changed into soap.
( )33. What do we know about Liu’s method of making soap out of plastic
A. It is not safe.
B. It works on the most common plastics.
C. “End-of-life” plastics cannot be recycled through it.
D. It has reduced nearly 200 million tons of plastic waste.
( )34. What is Liu’s suggestion in the end
A. Using soap made from plastic.
B. Recycling plastic in this new way.
C. Avoiding using “end-of-life” plastics.
D. Trying not to use plastic whenever possible.
( )35. What can we learn from the story

The 2024 Paris Summer Olympics are coming. While waiting for the event to begin, we can learn something about it.
The organizers have promised to bring less harm to the environment by minimizing the number of new-created buildings. In Paris, 95 percent of places used for the games are already there or will be put in place for a short period.
In one of the latest developments, the organizers announced that a total of 11,000 seats in two stadiums (体育场), Arena at Porte de la Chapelle in Paris and the Olympic aquatic (水上的) center in Saint-Denis, will use recycled plastic chairs.
The decision was made after local manufacturers (制造商) found there weren’t enough plastic materials, which forced them to turn to recycled waste.
That was how the organizers began working with Lemon Tri and Le Pavé. The two companies (公司) got an idea of getting plastic waste from recycling bins around the city. Over 100 tons of plastic is needed to make the seats and 80 percent of it is collected from local schools and street-side bins in Seine-Saint-Denis. It is also where the plastic waste is processed into new materials.
“When we ask children to put their bottles in the bins and tell them they’ll become the seats of the Olympic swimming pool, it helps them learn about the importance of recycling waste,” says Augustin Jaclin from Lemon Tri.
Of course, collecting plastic is one thing and turning it into Olympic chairs is another. After all, making them is not as easy as making normal chairs.
( )36. The underlined word “minimizing” in Paragraph 2 means “______”.
A. making something better B. making something public
C. making something smaller D. making something different
( )37. From Paragraph 5, we can learn ______.
A. how the plastic waste is processed
B. where the recycled plastic comes from
C. how many chairs will be made of recycled plastic
D. why the organizers work with Lemon Tri and Le Pavé
( )38. What does Augustin Jaclin think of collecting plastic from children
A. Difficult. B. Tiring.
C. Educational. D. Creative.
( )39. What may the writer talk about next
A. The importance of recycling waste.
B. The reasons for making plastic chairs.
C. The advantages of using recycled plastic.
D. The process of turning recycled plastic into chairs.
( )40. What is the best title for the passage
A. Two companies behind Paris Olympics
B. New swimming pool ready for Paris Olympics
C. A good way to teach the public about recycling
D. Paris Olympics to use recycled plastic for some seats

However, this has led to a huge increase in rubbish. In 2021, photos of plastic waste along the Qinghai-Tibet Highway were shared online. They made people worry about the local environment.

There is such a toilet on Mount Zheduo. To use it, visitors must throw an empty plastic bottle or other waste into an intelligent box. What’s more, they have to divide their waste properly. “Thousands of visitors have taken part in the project and millions of pieces of waste have been recycled in this way,” the organization behind the project said on Weibo.
People have different opinions about the project. A netizen (网民) said, “It’s a good idea, but it’s not possible for visitors to always have an empty bottle on hand.” Another netizen wrote, “This project not only makes it easier for people to find a toilet, but also reduces (减少) the pollution caused by the litter tourists drop. Save the ocean
The ocean covers over two-thirds of our planet. It not only provides food and valuable resources for humans, but is also home to all kinds of sea animals.
Ocean pollution can lead to many serious problems. To prevent this from happening, we should take action before it’s too late. Firstly, I suggest reducing the use of plastic products as many of them end up in the water, which is really bad for the environment. Secondly, we must stop overfishing because many sea animals are already endangered. Their disappearance will be harmful to the ocean’s ecosystem. Lastly, volunteering for beach clean-ups can be both helpful and meaningful.
In a word, protecting the ocean is of great importance. Let’s do our part to make a difference.
