Imagine a dog you don’t need to train. Instead, you can program it to do whatever you want. Now, you don’t need to imagine it. Meet Spot, a dog—like robot from US company Boston Dynamics.
In March, the Archaeological Park of Pompeii(庞贝考古公园) in Italy gave Spot a new job. Pompeii is a famous “time capsule(胶囊)” from the ancient world. Thousands of years ago, a nearby volcano covered the city in ash(火山灰). Many people died, but the ash kept buildings safe until someone found it in 1748.
So, what is Spot doing in Pompeii It walks around the site with a 3D scanner(扫描仪). There are many narrow, underground tunnels in Pompeii. Thieves used the tunnels to steal things. The tunnels bring safety problems to the ancient buildings. Robot dogs are small enough to go through these tunnels and find any changes to the buildings.
According to Gabriel Zuchtriegel, new director of the site, this is the first time anyone has used a robot to help protect an archaeological site. “It’s a break-through and it would allow us to protect the ruins with greater speed and in total safety,” said Zuchtriegel.
Spot will also work with a 3D—scanning drone(无人机). The two tools will check the site regularly. They will look for any damage that may need a repair. As art magazine ART news said, Pompeii is turning into a “Smart Archaeological Park”.
4. What can we learn about the Archaeological Park of Pompeii from Paragraph 2
A. A volcano covered the park in ash in 1748.

A new trend has recently swept through(席卷) the university scene in central China’s Henan Province: nighttime cycling trips from Zhengzhou, a capital of Henan province to Kaifeng, an ancient city in Henan. Groups of students set off on shared bikes late at night, cycling for over five hours to cover the 50—kilometer stretch to the city of Kaifeng. These night rides have grown so popular that, on some nights, long lines of cyclists can be seen stretching across the road, creating a vibrant scene.
This trend began on June 18, when four young women from Zhengzhou set off on a journey to try Kaifeng’s famous guantang bao, a type of soup dumpling. Leaving at around 7 p. m. , they cycled over 50 kilometers before being rewarded with a plate of steaming dumplings. Their adventure quickly went popular online, inspiring students across Zhengzhou to embark on their own nighttime cycling with the promise of a warm breakfast waiting them at dawn.
To warmly welcome these enthusiastic young cyclists, the Kaifeng government has coordinated(协调) efforts across departments to offer thoughtful services. Starting Nov.3, the city’s urban management department established specific bike docking points, guiding students on where to park their bikes. Local traffic police have been on duty from late night until dawn to ensure safety, while volunteers and rest stops have been set up to offer support along the way, earning the students’ appreciation. Additionally, several of Kaifeng’s popular attractions began offering free admission to university students on Nov. 3. This initiative allows young visitors to experience Kaifeng’s cultural heritage deeply, enriching their journey.
“These students, with their spirited night rides, bring new vitality to Kaifeng’s historic streets,” said a city official. “However, long—distance night cycling has potential risks, and may have a certain impact on traffic from Zhengzhou to Kaifeng.”
8. What motivated the trend of nighttime cycling trips from Zhengzhou to Kaifeng
A. A social media trend. B. A search for adventure.
C. A visit to a historical site. D. Desire for delicious food.
9. What do the underlined words “embark on” probably mean

Climate change is speeding up the frequency and seriousness of extreme(极端的) weather events in places like the Horn of Africa, where deadly floods and the worst drought hit in decades. Besides, traditional weather forecast(预报) models in sub—Saharan Africa often aren’t dependable enough to forecast extreme weather events accurately(准确地) ahead of time, leaving the areas at risk. Based on the facts, accurate and timely forecasts are important to safeguard lives and livelihoods.
Climate scientists are building artificial intelligence (AI) into the traditional weather forecasting method in East Africa to improve the accuracy of extreme weather forecasts. By using both physical atmospheric processes(物理大气过程) in traditional forecasting and AI, researchers develop a first—of—its—kind new modeling approach to give more accurate rainfall forecasts. “We start from the traditional forecasts and add the AI model over it to make up for what the traditional forecasts have missed, so that the final forecast results can more accurately match the data that has actually been observed,” explains Shruti Nath, a climate scientist and researcher at the University of Oxford Department of Physics.
According to Shruti Nath, this model, which only requires a notebook computer to run, without the need for expensive supercomputers, gives local meteorological (气象的) organizations an affordable way of making more accurate forecasts in an area where there is a shortage of accurate observational data. The researchers say the project could change early warning systems in East Africa, making the area get better prepared for the extreme weather caused by climate change.
Traditionally, many forecasting organizations in Africa had not good computational resources. The project is supported by an IT company, which provides funding and computational resources. This approach gives them the ability to use AI to make forecasting at the least computational expense.
The model is currently being rolled out in Kenya and Ethiopia. If successful in East Africa, researchers hope to use it in other parts of the world facing similar challenges. More countries are trying to spread the technology as well as build local ownership and trust.
12. What does the author want to stress in the first paragraph
A. The seriousness of the flood and drought in Africa.
B. The great climate changes caused by human activities.
C. The necessity of using the new weather forecast model.
D. Little progress has been made in weather forecasts.
13. How does the new weather forecast model work
A. It needs much less observational data.
B. It combines AI with the traditional method.
C. It uses supercomputers to process data.
D. It depends on AI instead of the former way.
14. What can we say about the new weather forecast model
A. It is low—cost. B. It runs easily.
C. It doesn’t work as wished. D. It is geographically limited.
15. What can be the most suitable title for the text
A. Climate Change and Its Effects on Africa
B. Uncertainty of Weather Forecast with AI
C. The Challenges Faced by Traditional Weather Forecast Model
D. AI Helping Improve Weather Forecast in Sub—Saharan Africa

Why is Chinese a Good Language to Learn
If there’s one language in the world that’s worth learning, it’s the Chinese language. You must be wondering why. 16
Gain the job opportunities. With the steady development for decades, China has become the second largest economic power in the world while keeping closely connected with the west. 17 It helps a lot if you’re looking to work in a career that involves dealing with Chinese buyers or suppliers.
Know about the history and culture. 18 In fact, China has had a significant say in the history of the world. It’s agreed that four great inventions—namely paper—making, printing, gunpowder and the compass—made their way from China to Europe via the famous Silk Road. To really understand the contribution of this part of the world and have a deep insight into the history of Asia, speaking the language can be beneficial.
19 Chinese literature, both ancient and modern, comes from an entirely different cultural background than literature written in the West. To really appreciate it, however, you have to read it in the original language. Many works of Chinese literature haven’t been translated into English, so you have no choice but to enjoy them as they stand. If you want to understand modern China, learning the Chinese language is vital.
Enjoy the food. In Britain, we’re familiar with Chinese food—or at least, a Westernized version of it. By learning the Chinese language, you’ll start to understand exactly what all of those words on the menu mean. In time, you might feel more comfortable ordering something that’s a little bit less familiar. 20
A. Translate the literature.
B. Appreciate the literature.
C. Here come a few good reasons to learn the language.
D. Therefore, the ability to speak Chinese language is pretty valuable.
E. China is home to the history and culture that runs for thousands of years.

Dear Tom,
How are you today I’m writing to share with you the information about the speech given by Professor Li.
Professor Li, a famous expert on earthquakes, delivered a speech on how to survive during an earthquake in the school hall on Friday afternoon. From his speech, we have recognized that if one knows how to behave when an earthquake strikes, the chance to survive will be greatly improved. He taught us a lot of self-rescue skills. For example, the most important is to stay calm and quickly move to a safe place. If trapped indoors, stay there and hide under a strong desk or table as a protecting shelter. If outdoors, move into the open air where falling objects are unlikely to strike us.
In summary, the speech is of great help and all of us need to know what to do during an earthquake.
Yours,
Li Hua
