Several days ago, I was walking home from school and saw some writing on the fence (栅栏)of a house I was passing by. It said, “Happiness is a direction, not a destination (终点).” I had been having a bad day and just reading this cheered me on a little. I also took out a pen and wrote one of my favourite quotes (名言) down.
When I came back to the fence, I saw another quote under mine in the handwriting as the first one. I added another, and we kept on in this way for quite a while. One day, I was writing a quote on the fence when the old man, who was one of my neighbors and owned the fence, saw me. I was afraid he would be mad at me for writing on his fence, and he was not known to be very friendly. Without saying a word, he read the quote on the fence, said to himself, and then went back inside. I was nervous for a-while, hesitant (犹豫不决) to return to the fence, but when I did, I noticed two words in different handwriting had been added: “Thank you!” Later, I saw the old man in his front yard. He called me and told me how my quotes had encouraged him, how he thanked me and how he was glad to see young people still have “values”.
We are now good friends and I talk to him a lot. This experience has brought so much joy to my life. I still don’t know who wrote that very first quote, but if he is out there, I’d love to share a big smile with him for making my day brighter.
5.The writer wrote a quote on the fence because he ______.
A.got some help from it B.wanted to play a joke
C.wanted to practise handwriting D.wanted to help his old neighbour
6.The old neighbour might feel ______ when he read the quotes and went back inside.
A.angry B.thankful C.surprised D.sorry
7.How does the author’s feeling change throughout the story?
A.Sad—Worried—Hopeful. B.Shy—Uninterested—Upset.
C.Down—Nervous—Joyful. D.Cheerful—Valuable—Pleased.
8.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To prove (证明) young people still have “values”.
B.To discuss how to create wall art and make friends.
C.To explain that writing on other people’s fences is right.
D.To show small kindness can make a difference in our life.

“The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru” is a popular documentary (纪录片), that tells a brave story from World War II. It’s about a Japanese ship, the Lisbon Maru, which took 1,800 British soldiers as prisoners of war (POWs,战俘) from Hong Kong to Japan in 1942. The ship didn’t show it had POWs, so an American submarine (潜艇) attacked it.
When the ship started to sink, Japanese soldiers put the POWs below the deck (甲板) and didn’t let them out. Many POWs were shot when they tried to get free. Some strong POWs broke out of the room they were in. As the ship got close to the Zhoushan Islands in China, something amazing happened. Local fishermen went out in their boats and saved 384 British soldiers from the water.
Audience (观众) were deeply moved. They watched the movie and stayed until the end to read the names of the British soldiers and the Chinese fishermen.
Director Fang Li heard this story from fishermen ten years ago and wanted to make a movie about it. He said, “It’s for the young British men and the Chinese fishermen.” To make the movie, Fang talked to many people who were there and their families. He put together their memories to tell the true story.
The fishermen’s children said their fathers always said, “We just did what we had to do.” when they talked about saving the soldiers. The families of the British soldiers were very thankful to the fishermen. They always remembered the fishermen who saved them, calling them true heroes. Humor (幽默) is part of human nature. Everyone has the ability to enjoy jokes and laughter, no matter who they are or where they come from. Humor is one of the most important ways people make connections with each other. Humor also helps you look on the bright side of life and face problems.
One sunny afternoon, the famous British writer Bernard Shaw was enjoying himself in a quiet field. Suddenly, a bike rider ran into him. Luckily, Mr. Shaw was not hurt. “I’m so sorry!” said the rider. “Oh, no,” said Mr. Shaw. “I should say sorry because I’m not giving luck to you. If you had killed me, you know, you would be famous all over the world.”
Feng Jicai, the Chinese writer, was once visited by an American friend and his young child in a hotel. While the two men were talking, the little boy was jumping up and down on his bed. The bed was shaking, and Feng was worried that it might break. He smiled to the boy, “Hey, boy! Are you trying to reach the sky? Will you return to the earth?” His friend understood at once, and said to his son jokingly. “______”

Shenzhou-19 is a special space mission (使命) that happened in 2024. It took three astronauts to space and connected with a big space home called Tianhe. There, they did many science jobs and tested new ideas.
