“Even the most bumpy (颠簸的) life must be lived brightly!” This is one of the famous lines from the hit TV show To the Wonder (《我的阿勒泰》), from works by Li Juan, a Chinese writer. In the show, herdsmen (牧民) in Altay, Xinjiang, wear their beautiful clothes to move to new grasslands.
Kazak (哈萨克族) herdsmen in Xinjiang move as the seasons change. In spring around April, herdsmen take their cattle and sheep halfway up the mountain. In summer, they move them to the top of the mountain for greener grass. In autumn, they come down from the mountain to spend the winter. This way, their cattle and sheep can always have fresh grass to eat.
Qialihaer,13, sees her grandparents and dad move every year. She said, “Before they leave, they usually take everything they need and bring it to the top of the mountain, including food, clothing and quilts.” When her dad was a boy, her grandparents usually picked one or two children of theirs to go with them. The rest stayed at home for school.

Every year on October 4th the world comes together for the well-being (福祉) of animals everywhere This is World Animal Day.
Starting in 1931 in Florence, Italy, the yearly event has become a special chance for everyone who cares about animals to make a difference. This year, the theme is “A Shared Planet”. “As we share this Earth with all living things, we can make a difference for all animals,” wrote the event’s website.
In the past ten years, China has done much to improve the well-being of domestic (驯养的) and wild animals. The protection of Asian elephants is a good example.
Asian elephants have become endangered because of hunting for their tusks (象牙). Asian elephants in China are mostly in Yunnan Province. These wild animals sometimes eat local farmers’ crops. The government has been trying to create a more harmonious relationship between the local people and wildlife. For example, they make rules to stop tusks trade.
With World Animal Day around the corner, we all can think of more ways to better protect our wild friends. Let’s take action together!

You’re walking down the street, thinking about your own business when a stranger passes by. He doesn’t say anything at all, but he gives you a smile. In a moment and almost unwillingly, you’re doing the same thing. You just can’t help it and you catch his smile. For some unknown reason, when we see someone smile, we just can’t stop ourselves doing the same thing.
In honor of World Smile Day (the first Friday in October), it’s the time we got real answers to this matter. Is smiling contagious (感染性的)
Well, a study in the Trends in Cognitive Sciences journal gives the answer “yes”. As part of the research, social psychologists (心理学家) looked into why we often copy (模仿) people’s facial expressions when we talk to them.
Interestingly, one of the conclusions (结论) was that we “try on” the emotions (感情) of others when we are talking with them. So, for example, when a friend tells us some good news happily, we may unconsciously (无意识地) show the same emotion through our smile. In doing so, we are feeling and understanding their joy.
So the reason we smile back when someone smiles at us is that we want to feel the same way as that person. However, not everyone can do this. During the research, the psychologists find people with some diseases can’t copy others’ facial expressions. They know someone is smiling but they cannot smile back.
27. What does the first paragraph mainly tell us
A. The reason for smiling back. B. An opinion on smiling back.
C. The result of smiling back. D. An example of smiling back.
28. Why do we smile back when we see someone else smile
A. Because we want to talk with the person. B. Because we are feeling the person’s joy.
C. Because we want the person to understand us. D. Because we want to show we are clever.
29. What problems do people with some diseases have
A. They can’t feel happy when others smile at them. B. They smile too much and can’t stop it.
C. They can’t copy others’ smiles. D. They never smile and they are unhappy.
30. Which could be the best title for this passage
A. Why is smiling contagious B. What’s World Smile Day
C. Why should we smile D. Do you know how to smile

Protect the Earth
The Earth is our home and we have only one Earth. However, our environment is becoming worse and worse because of human beings.
People cut down too many trees for farms and buildings, so there are fewer and fewer forests. As a result, many wild animals lose their living areas and have nowhere to live or no food to eat. Meanwhile, some hunters hunt or kill animals for their fur or bones. Then many wild animals may die because of this.
We should take action right now. The government should make laws to protect forests and wild animals. We students can also write to the newspapers or magazines to ask everyone to protect the environment.
