Interview with Cartoonist Adrienne Hedger
During the past few years, cartoonist (漫画家) Adrienne Hedger has provided the world with her humor. We caught up with her for an interview. And here are some highlights from it.
About cartooning
Drawing cartoons had been a hobby forever. I’d make cards for friends and family with my drawings. But mostly writing was my job until one of my friends who worked for the American Girl magazine wanted me to do drawings. I did the art and that was the first time that I had ever seen my drawings in a book. It’s really fun.
I record all my ideas and the things I see in my own life. I see everything in comics. The very first time I saw my husband, my thought was, “I know exactly how I would draw that guy because he had this really square face.” I prefer to see everything as a cartoon.
About her favorite cartoon
It’s really about my family. Early on, Claire dropped a roll of toilet paper into the toilet. It was a clean toilet, and we had to get the paper out and dry it off. I did a cartoon about that and that one was funny. We could not believe what happened. I really enjoy making a cartoon about a personal family moment.
______
I have a 14-year-old and a 16-year-old, both girls. They often are fine. But the one thing that they do not like is how I draw their clothing. Clearly, it’s not attractive. I just draw T-shirts with long sleeves (袖子) and long trousers. And there are a lot of complaints about that.
I created one cartoon recently where my younger daughter Claire wrote a sentence for homework and then fell off the chair. She was very tired. And there’s another one where she holds onto my leg and wants me to take her into the kitchen to get a snack. Those are really my favorite ones for some reason.
My older daughter Kate doesn’t pay that much attention. I spend my whole life watching them and cartooning about them. And the older they get, the less they care. Kate said, “If I see you drawing anyone rolling their eyes (翻白眼), I know it’s a cartoon about me.”
51.According to the article, Adrienne Hedger was a (n) ______ before becoming a cartoonist.
A.interviewer B.housewife C.writer D.publisher
52.Claire and Kate complain much about their mother’s drawings because ______.
A.they are too busy to finish their homework
B.they are tired of being the models for her creations
C.they are not satisfied with their clothing in her cartoons
D.they are not willing to pay much attention to her cartoons
53.What’s Kate’s attitude (态度) towards her mother’s cartoons
A.She finds them really interesting. B.She doesn’t care a lot about them.
C.She actively offers suggestions about them. D.She doesn’t like them and never watches them.
54.Which of the following would be the best subtitle (小标题) in ______
A.About getting along with her daughters B.About drawing cartoons of her daughters
C.About watching cartoons with her daughters D.About getting her daughters to enjoy cartoons
55.What can be inferred (推断) about how Adrienne Hedger feels about drawing cartoons
A.She enjoys making cartoons, especially family ones.
B.She was unwilling to draw cartoons at the very first.
C.She is proud of her cartoons and believes they are perfect.
D.She likes drawing cartoons on family members, especially her husband.
C
We decided not to tell the kids. Marla knew that once our three daughters understood that their mother had been given 1,000 days to live, they’d start counting.
They would not be able to enjoy school, friends, their teams, or birthday parties. They’d be watching too closely how she looked, moved, acted, ate, or didn’t. Marla wanted her daughters to stay children: happy, relaxed, and confident that tomorrow would look like yesterday.
In 2009, Marla’s doctor called to tell her that she had early-stage cancer. After several medical operations, she needed eight rounds of chemotherapy (化疗) to clear the cancer found in her body.
Our kids were 8, 9, and 11 at the time, and they understood that their mother was under treatment, but we never told them the news we soon learned from hospital: Marla had the most serious cancer cell, and she had little chance to stay alive. Her doctor directly told her: “Go to live your next 1,000 days in the best way you know how.”
Though she was badly ill, Marla went on running long distances, for her own mental (心理的) fitness, and more importantly, so her kids would see her strong. I knew these miles were a wonder. Marla survived a little more than 3,500 days instead of 1,000. In her lifetime, she celebrated 25 anniversaries (周年纪念日), 57 children’s birthdays, three college acceptances, and two high-school graduations. But the next numbers make me sad: Zero college graduations. Zero weddings. Zero grandchildren.
Marla said to me at the hospital, “No glory (辉煌的) days for us. We almost had the kids out of the house, and now you’re alone. I’m so sorry.” I replied, “Sorry about what You lived life to the fullest and made life worth living. I admired your power and courage. You already outran science. Thank you for taking me on your magic journey. Rest easy, my one and only girlfriend.”
56.If the children were told about Marla’s illness, they would ______.
A.remain active B.study harder C.stay out with friends D.live with worries
57.How did Marla face her illness
A.She continued sports activities. B.She accepted it angrily.
C.She avoided social life. D.She refused medical treatment.
58.What do the numbers show in Paragraph 5
A.Their valuable memories. B.Seriousness of her illness.
C.A mixed feeling of joy and sadness. D.Importance of family celebrations.
59.What does the underlined word “outran” mean in the last paragraph
A.相信 B.依赖 C.超过 D.证实
60.What does Marla’s story tell us
A.Life is not roses. B.The fullest life matters most.
C.Love can beat illness. D.Happiness takes long time.

①Do you like blueberries If so, the next time you’re about to eat these delicious berries, take a good look at them. ______
②For the most part, blueberries aren’t blue. If you carefully take off the skin of one blueberry, you’ll see that the fruit inside is white. If you rub (摩擦) the inside of the skin on a white piece of paper, you’ll see a reddish-purple color. And if you gently rub the outside of a blueberry, the blue color disappears and the berry looks almost black. But the moment you pick one, it does look blue. What’s going on ______
③Well, there are two ways to create colors. The first is through pigments (色素). Pigments show the color of the light they don’t take in. The most common pigment in plants is chlorophyll (叶绿素), a green pigment. Plant leaves appear green because chlorophyll doesn’t take in green light. It sends it out instead while taking in blue and red light. Plants prefer to take in blue light because it has more energy than any other light. In fact, there aren’t any “true blue” pigments in the plant world. ______
④The second way to make color is through“structural color (结构光)”. This happens when the surface makes some colors of light look different. Have you ever seen the rainbow colors on a CD These colors show up because of the tiny spaces between the CD’s thin layers (层). These spaces only allow certain colors to reach our eyes. ______
⑤Blueberries also create“structural color” in their own way. The berries look black when they’re ripe (成熟的), but the plants build a thin layer of wax (蜡) on their outside. This layer is only 0.4% of a centimeter thick, but it gives the berries their blue look. The blue color helps the plants because birds are attracted to the rare color. They eat the berries and spread the seeds (种子) far and wide.
⑥Now your bowl of blueberries suddenly looks a lot more interesting. The fruit is beautiful, but its beauty is only skin deep!
61.According to the article, after you gently rub the outside of a blueberry, it almost looks ______.
A.blue B.white C.black D.reddish-purple
62.Which of the following pictures correctly shows why a leaf looks green to us
A. B. C. D.
63.Blueberries appear blue in the same way that ______.
A.a CD appears colorful B.a tree leaf appears green
C.they appear black when ripe D.a fallen leaf appears yellow
64.The sentence “Then ask yourself: Are blueberries really blue ” should be put ______.
A.at the end of Paragraph 1 B.at the end of Paragraph 2
C.at the end of Paragraph 3 D.at the end of Paragraph 4
65.Which of the following shows the structure of this passage
A.①/②③/④⑤⑥ B.①/②/③④/⑤⑥ C.①②/③④/⑤⑥ D.①/②/③④⑤/⑥

Are Home Robots a Good Idea
As science and technology develop so fast, there are many types of home robots on the market today. More and more people like them and want to own one. Amazon’s Astro is the favourite on the robot market. It can do many tasks, such as carrying drinks and playing music. The robot can also be controlled when the owner is not at home. It can be used to check on pets and people, or whether the oven (烤箱) is left on. Other home robots can be used to do housework and more. Do you think home robots are a good idea
Emily I’d like to have a home robot! Home robots can help out with housework. This makes people free enough to do the things they enjoy. The robots can also help people guard against any possible danger in homes. For example, it can remind the owner when there is a water leak (漏水) or a broken window. It can keep an eye on pets or young children. What’s more, the robots can stay and chat with people. They can also help people stay in touch. In this way, they can make people feel less lonely. In general, home robots can provide people with what is needed. Lucas I don’t think it’s good to have home robots! Doing housework is a good way for us to stay active and healthy. If home robots do everything for us, we will become lazy. Even worse, we will be unable to do certain tasks. If the robot breaks down, we may not be able to clean our home or cook for ourselves. Lots of people already depend on phones for navigation (导航) and can’t read maps. Also, many home robots, like Astro, have cameras and microphones. They can record lots of information about us, including our conversations. As a result, our private information can’t be protected.
Just as the saying goes, every coin has two sides. Home robots can bring us a lot of convenience (便利) and make our life easier. But if we depend on them too much, we may be troubled with it as well. That’s a problem worth thinking about.
Title: Are Home Robots a Good Idea

Dear Editor,
I’m happy to hear that we will have an English festival next term. I believe it will make our school life more colorful and provide a good chance for us to enjoy the beauty of English.
As for the activities, I’d like to recommend Telling good Chinese stories in English. In my opinion, it will not only make ourselves understand our culture better but also improve our English speaking and writing. More importantly, we can help to spread Chinese culture through the activity.
Grade 9 students can get prepared during the winter holiday. It’s necessary to choose a good Chinese story first. If we don’t know how to tell the story in English clearly, we can email teachers for help. We can also practise it in front of our parents or friends. Maybe they have some good ideas.
I think it’ll be very meaningful if we can tell good Chinese stories in English at the English Festival. I hope my advice is worth taking.
Yours sincerely,
Liu Qing

I’m happy to hear that we will have an English Festival next term. I’m sure it is an important chance for us students to improve our learning skills and show our talents.
I’d like to recommend an activitity named English chorus competition for the festival. By practising singing together, we can not only improve our English pronunciation but also make our English study more enjoyable. What’s more, we can learn about teamwork and become closer to each other.
During the winter vacation, Grade Nine students can learn the songs at home with the help of the Internet at the beginning. Later, the whole class can gather together at school and practise singing once a week.
In my opinion, it is meaningful for us to take part in the English chorus competition. I hope my advice would be helpful to you.
Yours sincerely,
Liu Qing
