There are apps and websites that are designed to help people in their daily lives-whether they’re trying to feel less anxious in hard times, or to hear and see the world better. Let’s explore some!
Seeing AI
It is a clever app designed to support people who are blind or partially sighted and want to be able to read the world around them. Created by technology company Microsoft, the app uses a phone’s camera to look at signs, banknotes and other forms of text, and read out what they say or are. The app, which Microsoft describes as a “talking camera”, can even recognize friends and describe people around you.
Smiling Mind
It is an app made in Australia. It helps young people learn about meditation (冥想) and mindfulness, which are ways to focus your thoughts. It’s free, and gives you exercises to practise for 10 minutes a day. The exercises are designed to help with your concentration and stress, and you can use them with your family or friends.
TextHear
This is an app created for people who are deaf or have hearing loss. It uses the phone’s microphone to listen to conversations, and turn them into text on the screen so people can see what is being said. Its developers say that it is easier than lip-reading (唇读). Besides, it can translate different languages.
Colorfy
It is a fun “art and digital colouring” app where you tap on different parts of drawings to colour them in. It’s been designed to help you relax and deal with anxious and stressful moments by concentrating on something creative and calming.
21. Why is Seeing AI described as a “talking camera”

For as long as Paul Ninson can remember, storytelling has been a part of his DNA. Growing up in Kumasi, Ghana, with his grandparents, he was attracted by the historical stories they shared. “I would contribute in some way to telling my own story. I studied arts in school. When I reached university, I studied clothing design but it wasn’t enough for me,” says Ninson.
One day, a friend of his returned from the USA with a camera and that is when things began to get interesting. Ninson was introduced to a new world of photography (摄影). At the time, he had a side business designing and printing T-shirts but he decided to close that business and sold his iPhone to buy a camera.
To be different from the other Ghanaian photographers, Ninson took some ideas from a book Blue Ocean Strategy. He made a living by taking pictures during events but he knew photojournalism was his true calling. “My content was different and the pictures I was posting was different. That made me accepted by one of the best photography schools in New York, the International Center of Photography,” recalls Ninson.
All of a sudden, a world of chances opened up to Ninson. He spent his free time at the New York public library among the thousands of books and images. “I saw photos of Africa that I had never seen before, which made me wonder why these images were in America, but not in Africa. That is how the idea of a photo library began.”
Today, that small dream has turned into “the biggest photo library in Africa” as Ninson calls it, the Dikan Center, which opened in December last year with 30,000 books. “Now we are more than a library. We have education programs, a story lab, and a community center which is a space to enjoy free internet and resources for everyone to hang out,” says Ninson.
24. What started Ninson’s journey into photography
A. His side business. B. His interest in arts.
C. Grandparents’ stories. D. A friend’s influence.
25. What does the underlined word “that” refer to in paragraph 3
A. The uniqueness of Ninson’s photos.
B. Ninson’s experience during events.
C. The book Blue Ocean Strategy.
D. The help from other photographers.
26. How did Ninson feel when seeing the photos of Africa in America
A. Excited. B. Confused. C. Lucky. D. Proud.
27. What do we know about the Dikan Center
A. It’s a bookstore for storybooks.
B. It’s the biggest library in Africa.
C. It has free internet for public use.
D. It contains 30,000 photos and images.

Andean bears, known for their image in the movie Paddington, are native to the Andes Mountains. Shy by nature, they usually avoid humans, making them difficult for scientists to study. Listed as endangered by the IUCN, they are threatened by habitat loss, climate change, and influence from humans. The bears can sometimes go after livestock (牲畜), but studies show their threat is not as serious as believed. A family of flowering plants called bromeliads (凤梨) forms a major part of Andean bears’ food, but little is known about their foraging (觅食) behavior across the cloud forest and grassland habitats.
In the new study, researchers surveyed two species of bromeliad in mountainous grasslands in and around Peru’s Manu National Park. They recorded the position of each plant and bear feeding signs, such as dug-up or partially eaten bromeliads. GPS-enabled collar (项圈) cameras observed that Andean bears were present at the sites. However, the surveys showed that the bears foraged food in just 16.7% of the bromeliad areas they could find. Andean bears were more likely to forage in the dry season when young and soft plants were tastier and healthier for them to eat. They seldom foraged for bromeliads outside the national park, where livestock feed.
Mountainous grasslands next to cloud forest are key habitats for Andean bears, and governments should consider how livestock influence this ecosystem. Although the bears avoided areas with livestock, they did forage in areas where livestock had been kept several years ago. This behavioral adaptability may help them recover lost habitats quickly with specific protection measures, the researchers say.
The researchers add: “The data (数据) from the surveys helps us understand the Andean bear and its habitat, and develop more effective protection strategies. The GPS camera collars use very little electricity, but we stress one major limitation-the inability to collect information beyond daylight hours. Infrared LED technology will soon solve this problem in years to come.”
28. What makes studying Andean bears difficult
A. They live in the wild.
B. They have a special diet.
C. They avoid human contact.
D. They attack people sometimes.
29. What was a finding about Andean bears through GPS-enabled cameras
A. They ate up all the bromeliads.
B. They foraged outside the national park.
C. They were very picky about their food.
D. They were short of food in the dry season.
30. What can be inferred from paragraph 3
A. Andean bears are highly adaptable.
B. Livestock are mainly from cloud forests.
C. Andean bears have recovered lost habitats.
D. Livestock are in harmony with Andean bears.
31. What is the problem with the collars according to the researchers
A. They waste a lot of power.
B. They do harm to bears’ health.
C. They cannot provide data at night.
D. They don’t work in cold temperatures.
D
What’s the worst kind of sleep for your health: the kind where you keep a right bedtime but wake up every few hours, or the kind where you go to bed late and only get a few hours of shut-eye Scientists might finally have an answer.
Patrick Finan and his team carried out a study comparing the two types of sleep in a group of 62 healthy people who were good sleepers. The participants (参与者) spent three days and nights in a sleep lab and answered questions about their mood (情绪) every evening before sleeping. While they slept, the researchers measured their sleep stages (阶段) to document when and how much of each stage of sleep, from light to deeper sleep, each participant got every night. A third of the group were arranged to be woken up several times a night, another third were not allowed to go to sleep until later but weren’t woken up, and the final group, which acted as the control group, was allowed to sleep without being interrupted (打断) through the night.
When Finan compared the three groups’ mood ratings, he found that the interrupted and short sleepers both showed drops in positive mood after the first night. But on the next nights, the interrupted sleepers continued to report diminishing positive feelings while the short sleepers did not-they stayed at about the same level they had reported after the first night.
When he studied the brain of interrupted sleepers and short sleepers, he found that those who woke up repeatedly showed less deep sleep that is usually connected with feeling relaxed, than those getting the same sleep but in a continuous time.
The finding suggests how everything from stress to anxiety can affect both sleep and mood. You can’t avoid the stresses in your daily life, but you just might be able to lessen the blow with sleep-as long as it’s uninterrupted.
Why did the researchers measure the participants’ sleep stages
A. To ask questions after sleeping.
B. To examine their health condition.
C. To wake them up from time to time.
D. To record time and length of their sleep.
33. What does the underlined word “diminishing” mean in paragraph 3
A. Falling. B. Disappearing. C. Erupting. D. Growing.
34. What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us
A. Deep sleep has no effect on mood.
B. Short sleepers have a smarter brain.
C. Interrupted sleepers feel more relaxed.
D. Interrupted sleep is worse than short sleep.
35. What can we do with the stresses according to the finding
A. Stay in a good mood. B. Have uninterrupted sleep.
C. Keep away from troubles. D. Manage free time properly.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
I have always been questioning what “success” means for me. And I believe that this question is common for everyone. Many people would think that being successful means being popular, wealthy and famous. 36
There is the social success. It has to do with what most people in society think are important, such as falling in love or getting married or having children. 37 So it’s totally okay if someone decides to have their own idea of what success is, even if it’s different from what most people think.
38 It’s about reaching the goals in your job or education. Most of those around me view success as a combination (结合) of making enough money while working on a job that they love. Personally, I think that professional success isn’t only wealth and title, but it’s the value that I bring to other people lives. It’s a smiling face, a greener area and a growing organization. 39
Moreover, there is the personal success. 40 It might be spiritual, or just be comfortable with everything around you. This type of success is just like what Christopher Morley said “There is only one success-to be able to spend your life in your own way”. It’s just allows us to speak up our mind and follow our hearts. Inside peace leads towards happiness, and this could be a success too!
A. There is the professional success.
B. Going after success requires hard work.
C. But different people have different opinions.
D. It’s doing what makes me and the world happy.
E. This is why we have to choose our own success.
F. In my own opinion, there are different types of success.
G. It is to be truly happy, and being at peace with ourselves.

Last month, it was my friend Emily’s birthday, and she invited us to her house to celebrate. I was really excited because Emily always gave me special birthday gifts, so I wanted to do something good in return. I decided that, instead of just buying her a gift, I’d bake (烤) her a cake. I’m not a master in the kitchen, but how hard could it be to bake a simple chocolate cake, right
The day before the party, I went to the store to pick up everything I needed: flour (面粉), sugar, eggs, and, of course, chocolate. I even bought a nice toy to make the cake look beautiful. I was feeling pretty confident.
When I got home, I started mixing everything together. It was going smoothly and the kitchen was filled with the sweet smell of baking. But then, disaster struck. I was rushing to get the cake finished, and in a hurry, I took the wrong bag. Without even thinking, I put in what I thought was sugar, but it was actually salt!
The cake looked perfect when it came out—golden brown with a shiny top. The smell was so amazing that I couldn’t wait to show it at the party. I imagined everyone was surprised at my baking skills and how impressed Emily would be. But little did I know, my cake was about to become the most memorable birthday cake ever.
The next day, I arrived at Emily’s party with the cake. The moment came when we cut the cake. Emily, being the birthday girl, was the first to taste the cake. She carefully cut a piece, and with a big smile, she took the first bite (咬). But then ... her expression changed. Her eyes widened for a second; she looked at me, clearly puzzled.
“Uh ... are you sure this is a cake ” she asked, trying hard not to laugh.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I immediately took a bite myself, and my heart dropped. But instead of making me feel worse, Emily just laughed harder.高一英语试题参考答案

Dear Michael,
I hope you’re doing well. I’m writing to ask for your help as I’m having some difficulty with memorizing English vocabulary.
At present, I find it extremely hard to keep new words for a long time. Even after reviewing them several times, I forget their meanings very quickly. Besides, I don’t know how to tell apart words that look or sound similar, which troubles me a lot. What’s worse, I sometimes feel overwhelmed by the large number of words I need to learn in each unit.
Could you please recommend some methods to help me overcome these challenges I would really appreciate your advice. Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节 (满分25分)
I immediately took a bite myself, and my heart dropped. The moment the flavor hit my tongue, I knew something had gone terribly wrong. It was so salty! Not the rich, sweet chocolate cake I had imagined! My face turned bright red, and the entire room went dead silent. “I-uh-I think I used salt instead of sugar!” I stammered, hardly able to look anyone in the eye. Then, as if planned, everyone burst out laughing. “Well, this is definitely a new flavor I wasn’t expecting! A salty chocolate cake... that’s an interesting choice,” Emily said. I felt my face get even hotter.
But instead of making me feel worse, Emily just laughed harder. “Honestly, it’s not the worst cake I’ve ever had,” she said, still giggling, wiping away a tear. “And hey, at least it’s something we’ll never forget!” At that point, everyone joined in, and the room was filled with laughter. The kids who had been eagerly waiting for the cake rushed to try the salty surprise, all full of curiosity and excitement. I was soon involved in the cheerful atmosphere and we had a pleasant time at Emily’s birthday party. It may have been a baking disaster, but it was surely the most unforgettable moment of the celebration!
