Lynn Jenner quickly packed up and drove to higher ground as Hurricane Hone approached in 2024. However, he wasn’t relocating his family; he was shifting snails.
Jenner works with some of the rarest endangered species on the planet — Hawaii’s native tree snails. Once abundant like Christmas ornaments on trees, these colorful, jewel-like snails are now mostly extinct with more than half of the 750 species vanishing within the span of a human lifetime. Jenner and his team with Hawaii’s Department of Land and Natural Resources face the monumental task of saving what’s left.
To beat extinction, 40 species of snails, each about the size of a dime, are being cared for by humans in an unremarkable trailer near Honolulu. “Most people think of pandas and tigers when they think of endangered species going extinct, but imagine having 40 different species that are all as rare as pandas.” Jenner says.
This winter, one species of snail will reach a significant milestone. It will be released in a special enclosure in the mountains of Oahu, which has been painstakingly prepared to give the snails the best chance of survival in their natural habitat.
However, the outlook for Hawaii’s snails remain uncertain. Around the globe, plants and animals are being brought into enclosure as a last-ditch effort against extinction. But with climate change and the spread of invasive species, many have no clear path back to the wild in the near term. This could mean they will remain under human care. In light of the biodiversity crisis, many wildlife biologists believe there’s no other option. “These are irreplaceable biological treasures,” Jenner says. “It is now or never. What we manage to preserve on Earth will be what the next generation can reintroduce.”
4. What does the text say about Hawaii’s tree snails
A. They live as long as humans. B. 375 species have disappeared.
C. Their population has increased. D. They are close to extinction.
5. How does Lynn Jenner help endangered snails
A. By restoring their habitats. B. By studying their behavior.
C. By reducing invasive species. D. By moving and caring for them.
6. What is the purpose of Paragraph 4
A. To compare snails to pandas. B. To explain snails’ survival in nature.
C. To stress a key snail release event. D. To describe why snails are in a trailer.
7. What can be concluded from the last paragraph
A. Popular species should be prioritized. B. Human care is vital for endangered species.
C. Biodiversity conservation faces uncertainty. D. Climate change alone causes snail extinction.
C
If humans attempt to establish communities on the moon or other planets, what will they eat A new experiment has begun to determine if meat cells can grow in space.
Even on Earth, growing meat from cells is challenging. Cow cells(though any animal’s meat could be used) are fed essential nutrients like amino acids and carbohydrates. These cells multiply until muscle tissue forms, eventually creating consumable meat through a process called “cultivation(培养)”. This method involves growing meat in tanks that resemble brewery setups more than traditional farms, bypassing the life-cycle of animals raised for meat— birth, life and kill. “Animal cells grow slowly,” explains David Humbird, a chemical engineer. “If bacteria were to get into the cultivation, it would multiply more rapidly than the animal cells, effectively taking over and halting animal cell production. You end up with a culture of bacteria instead, which is useless and must be discarded.” he adds.
Humbird further clarifies that cells cultivated on consumable materials primarily consist of sugar, amino acids and water. Consequently, the caloric value of these lab-grown cells will always be lower than the input materials. At the best case one could probably recover 25% of the calories for consumption. This raises the question: “why transport all those calories into space just to waste 75% of them ”
Karen Nyberg, a former astronaut, emphasizes the crucial role of food in space missions. “Food like powdered milk and that sort of thing comes as a regular source for astronauts, but space-grown meat is a novelty we lack. Any advancement in this area significantly boosts our morale and eases our pressure.” For extended missions away from Earth, access to fresh produce becomes essential for maintaining crew health.
Indeed, if humanity intends to establish a presence on Mars, how to provide astronauts with nutrient-rich food that doesn’t spoil— and tastes good— is a crucial yet complex puzzle that must be addressed.
8. What is a key challenge in cell-based meat production
A. High cost of nutrients. B. Difficulty in keeping tanks.
C. Lack of suitable cells. D. Slow cell growth rate.
9. What does David Humbird think of growing meat in space
A. It is resource inefficient. B. It is promising.
C. It is cost-effective. D. It is unethical.
10. Why does Karen support growing meat in space
A. It reduces the cost of transporting food from Earth.
B. It provides diverse food choices for astronauts.
C. It facilitates long-term medical development.
D. It tastes much better than powdered milk.
11. What is the best title for the passage
A. Will Lab-grown Meat Help Feed Astronauts B. Will Astronauts like Cell-Cultured Meat
C. Food Revolution: From Tube to Table D. The Rise of Bioengineered Food
D
The next time you’re feeling down or frustrated with the world, consider whether you’ve really been dealt a poor hand. That’s one key conclusion from a recent study on entitlement, a personality characteristic marked by exaggerated (夸张的) sense of deservingness and superiority. Entitlement may lead to ongoing disappointment, say researchers from Case Western Reserve University.
The authors reached these conclusions after analyzing more than 170 academic papers. They found that individuals with high levels of entitlement consistently fall victim to a three-part cycle: First, they don’t always get what they think they deserve, leaving them more likely to have unmet expectations. Those unfulfilled expectations are then perceived as injustices, leading to emotions like anger and sadness. Finally, to justify those emotions, entitled people keep telling themselves they are special. While this temporarily boosts their mood, it ultimately starts the cycle anew.
At extreme levels, entitled people repeatedly expose themselves to the risk of feeling frustrated and disappointed with life. They also often struggle with poor relationships, interpersonal conflicts, and depression, says co-author Julie Exline, PhD, a professor of psychological sciences at Case Western Reserve. “Entitlement is largely about competition— being better or more deserving than others,” she told . “It really sets individuals at odds with society, leading to isolation.”
“It’s challenging for true narcissists (自恋者) to recognize their own behavior, or change their mindset.” Exline admits. However, she believes that for many well-intentioned people, feelings of entitlement can be managed. “Conditioning yourself to think about others and what they deserve — and also being willing to acknowledge your own faults and weaknesses — can help foster better connections with others.” she suggests.
We should be also aware that not all feelings of entitlement are negative or unhealthy: We shouldn’t just lower our standards or stop expecting what we truly deserve just to be happier. But if you do notice that you’ve developed an overblown sense of self that is causing annoyance or conflict with others, it’s definitely worth trying to address.
12. What does the underlined part “you’ve really been dealt a poor hand” in Paragraph1 mean
A. You’re bad at playing cards.
B. You’re unable to handle emotions.
C. You indeed face unfortunate circumstances.
D. You should complain more about your situation.
13. Which statement reflects an entitled person’s mindset
A. “Deadlines don’t apply to me — I’m too important.” B. “I’m grateful and will contribute to my team.”
C. “I always listen to others’ opinions.” D. “I’m willing to work my way up.”
14. How does the entitlement cycle affect emotions
A. It increases aggression. B. It constantly boosts mood.
C. It causes frequent frustration. D. It enhances emotional stability.
15. What does Exline suggest entitled people do
A. Seek approval for their superiority. B. Blame their faults on external factors.
C. Admit their mistakes and value others. D. Take full responsibility for all outcomes.

Sweat dripped from Callie’s face as she helped her big brother Briggs load hay bales (干草捆) onto the conveyor (输送机). She wasn’t strong enough to lift them herself, but she could at least help drag them into place. The machine chattered noisily while it carried the bales up to the hayloft, where Callie’s dad stacked them.
All was quiet when Callie went inside to feed the horses. But as she filled the water buckets, she thought she heard a faint meow from the hayloft. She climbed the steps to the loft and listened. The sound seemed to be coming from behind the bales. She ran to get her dad and Briggs. Briggs cocked his head. “It’s coming from outside,” he determined. “Just a bird in a tree.” Callie’s dad agreed. “How do you know for sure ” Callie said. “I guess we’ve just got better ears than you,” Briggs joked.
But Callie wasn’t convinced. She checked the hayloft again after supper. “Are you stuck in there, kitty ” she said, pressing an ear to the bales. Callie raced back to the house. “I heard it again, Dad! Will you please listen once more ” “All right, Cal,” her dad said, turning off the TV. “I’ll go check while you get ready for bed.” A few minutes later, Dad poked his head into Callie’s room. “The only thing I heard out there was a screech owl,” he said. “So stop worrying.” “OK, Dad,” Callie said. “Thanks for checking.”
But she woke in the night thinking about what she’d heard. What if a kitten was trapped behind the bales She lay on her back, wondering what to do. Finally, she grabbed a flashlight and crept into the barn.

Dear John,
Our school will host its first-ever “Campus Culture Week” with the theme of “Embracing the World, Connecting the Future” in April. On behalf of the planning team, I’m reaching out for your expertise to make this event truly special.
To create an immersive experience where students can explore the richness of global cultures, the event features a variety of activities, ranging from cultural exhibitions, food tastings, art performances to interactive games. I’d appreciate it if you could offer us relevant information like unique handicrafts, local specialties or traditional festivals. Additionally, should there be any entertaining activities in your culture, please do recommend them to us in detail.
Your insights would be invaluable in making this event a success. Looking forward to your early reply!
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】One possible version:
Once in the barn, she shined the flashlight's beam toward the ladder. Her heart pounding, Callie climbed up to the hayloft. She moved carefully between the hay bales, listening intently. Suddenly, she heard a faint meow coming from a far corner. Excited but cautious, Callie inched her way towards the sound, moving hay bales aside one by one. As she neared the source, the meowing grew louder and more desperate. Finally, behind the last bale, she spotted a tiny black and white kitten, its eyes wide with fear.
Finally, Callie picked up the scared kitten from the corner of the hayloft. She cradled it gently in her arms, the little kitten shivering all over. It snuggled against her, seemingly relieved to be found. Callie carefully made her way down the ladder and rushed back to the house. She woke her father and brother, proudly showing them the kitten and explaining how she had trusted her instincts. Her family was amazed and proud of her persistence. She decided to name the kitten“Lucky” and vowed to care for it until they could find its owner or, if necessary, give it a permanent home on their farm.
