Four Best Places to See the Art of Leonardo da Vinci
Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milan
Leonardo da Vinci painted the world-famous work The Last Supper on a wall next to the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy. The wall painting was innovative for the time. However, due to its use of this new method and environmental factors, the 15th-century painting has seen its fair share of deterioration (退化) over the years.
Uffizi Gallery, Florence
Uffizi Gallery is a must-see, thanks to its display of works by young da Vinci. These paintings were all completed before 1482, the year the artist left Florence to paint for Duke Ludovico il Moro in Milan. In this room, visitors can explore the early stages of the artist’s brilliance. Annunciation and Adoration of the Magi are two of the highlights that demonstrate his keen attention to detail, and amazing ability to draw landscape backgrounds.
National Gallery of Art, Washington DC
Another national museum lucky enough to have a da Vinci’s work in its collection is the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. In fact, Ginevra de’ Benci is the only work by da Vinci on public view in the Americas. The portrait (肖像) was one of Leonardo’s first experiments with oil painting. The gallery bought the portrait in 1967 for a sum of $5 million — a record price at the time.
The Louvre, Paris
One of the largest museums in the world, the Louvre is well-known for being the home of da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, the earliest Italian painting to focus on the sitter in a half-length portrait. But how did such an important work by the Italian Renaissance artist end up in France That’s because da Vinci brought the painting with him to France in 1517, where he continued to work on it-it was his favourite painting and he would continuously add details to it for the rest of his life.
1. Which museum only exhibits works by da Vinci during his youth
A. The Louvre. B. Uffizi Gallery.
C. National Gallery of Art. D. Santa Maria delle Grazie.
2. When did the National Gallery of Art buy Ginevra de’ Benci
A. In 1482. B. In 1517. C. In 1915. D. In 1967.
3. Which painting did Leonardo da Vinci like best
A. Mona Lisa. B. Annunciation.
C. The Last Supper. D. Adoration of the Magi.
I vividly remember the upsetting experience of that night many years ago. I was a young girl at the time, and my thoughts were often clouded by doubts and fears about my future. So on a beautiful summer evening, I decided to go out for a drive. But suddenly, that night turned into a disaster due to a car accident.
I was rushed to hospital. The doctor walked in. “Due to the seriousness of your injuries,” he began, “you’ll probably have a difficult time walking, let alone dancing or other sports.” It was terrible for me to hear the news. Basketball was my favourite sport and being on the school team meant everything to me. I cried uncontrollably, imagining the very worst for my future. My parents took over. “Thank you for your advice,” they said calmly to the doctor. “Our daughter will be up and walk again soon.”
With determination and the incredible support from my family and friends, I began the long and challenging road to healing. I literally had to learn how to walk again.
During long days sitting immobile, I started self-reflecting and soul-searching. I examined my life choices and where my life was heading. I’d made a habit of worrying about future events that had not happened yet. My negative thoughts created mood swings, feelings of despair and depression. I suffered anxiety attacks and headaches.
What began as a nightmare (噩梦) gave me time and space to learn about personal development and transformation. With time, not only did I dance and play basketball again, I also transformed my entire way of life. I learned to change the way I thought. I learned to replace despair with hope, and reactivity with reflection.
What’s even more amazing was that the accident created a key moment, helping me discover my life purpose. Thirty-five years later, after years of study and driven by a grand vision, I authored a wellness book and founded Splendid Inspiration, an international personal development company. Sharing the lessons I’ve learned to help others create lives filled with purpose and happiness has become my greatest joy.
4. Why did the author drive at that night
A. To relax herself. B. To comfort her friend.
C. To pick up her parents. D. To improve her driving skills.
5. How did the author feel after hearing the doctor’s words
A. Hopeful. B. Grateful. C. Ashamed. D. Worried.
6. What does the underlined word “healing” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Fame. B. Recovery. C. Fortune. D. Knowledge.
7. What can we learn from the author’s story
A. All roads lead to Rome. B. Well begun is half done.
C. Every coin has two sides. D. Two heads are better than one.
No pain, no gain, as the old exercise saying goes. But how much pain do you have to bear to benefit from training That depends on what you’re trying to achieve, fitness experts say.
For years, some trainers have instructed gym-goers that to get the best results, they need to train until failure, meaning until they cannot physically do one more repetition or exercise. Some recent studies, however, suggest this extreme rule may only benefit certain people.
“If somebody wants to increase muscle (肌肉) mass as much as they possibly can, then training to failure is something to consider.” said Michael Zourdos, chair of exercise science and health promotion at Florida Atlantic University.
Zourdos and his colleagues found that training until failure may build bigger muscles, but isn’t needed to increase strength. He said people who work out hard, but don’t push themselves to the state of being totally tired out, will still likely improve their health and fitness. “There is a difference between training for health and training for excellent performance,” he said.
He also said failure training often comes at a cost, since people working to that standard might be so tired that they have no energy to join their next gym training or two. In extremely rare instances, overdoing it can be harmful, leading to a potentially fatal condition called rhabdomyolysis, where damaged muscles begin to break down, possibly causing kidney (肾脏) damage.
James Fisher, a sports science expert and consultant in Southampton, England, said whatever your fitness goal was, the concept of failure training could be applied into your workout. But people should then rest the muscle group they trained for roughly two days, he said.
For people who have more experience, experts recommend saving the failure training for occasional workouts, or on the last set of exercises in their training. “It’s not meant to be for every person, every time they work out,” Fisher said. “This is a tough way to exercise.”
8. What is the function of the saying in the first paragraph
A. To give examples. B. To lead in the topic.
C. To make comparisons. D. To provide an argument.
9. What does the author want to show by mentioning rhabdomyolysis
A. The harm of failure training. B. The benefit of eating healthily.
C. The importance of bigger muscles. D. The necessity of training in a gym.
10. What did James Fisher advise people to do after they train to failure
A. Try lifting weights at once. B. Have their kidney checked.
C. Look for an excellent trainer. D. Rest for about two days.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. How Hard Should You Train B. How Often Should You Do Exercise
C. How Can You Improve Your Health D. How Do You Lose Weight in a Healthy Way
In Mexico, a chinampa is an island that was built up by the native Aztec people with mud from the bottom of a lake that surrounds their capital. One of these areas is called Xochimiloo.
Food grown on the islands in Xochimilco has fed people for hundreds of years, but the chinampas here are under threat from urbanization. Many families are giving up the ancient practice to rent out or sell their land for more profitable uses such as soccer fields and tourism. “If you do well in farming, you could earn $5,000 to S10.000 a year,” one local landowner said. “In the tourist area, you could have that within a couple of weekends.”
Some of those remaining, like Cassandra Gardu o, are banding together to promote the traditional use of the chinampas. When her grandfather died in 2010 and her uncles didn’t want to carry on, Gardu o took it upon herself to learn farming. She bought land from a friend’s uncle in 2020 and grew kinds of produce, including sunflowers and eggplants. Now 32-year-old Gardu o is one member of the growing organization called Chinampo Refuge, and she and other members encourage local people to protect their land. They follow ancient growing techniques but are trying new commercial approaches to compete with cheaper produce grown on massive farms elsewhere in Mexico. That includes a special label-Etiqueta Chinampera, which tells buyers the produce came from a chinampa.
Luis Zambrano an ecologist who has worked in Xochimilco for decades, says fed and watered by the lake, the fields can produce three to five crops of vegetables a year without the need for chemicals. But now, on weekends, it’s common to see more soccer players boating to islands than farmers tending their crops. Over the past two to three years, there has been a massive increase in the number of soccer fields on the islands. “It doesn’t look that harmful because there’s no construction,” says Zambrano. “But it’s just as damaging because of the amount of chemicals that are used, and the amount of pollution that is generated.”
12. What can we learn from paragraph 2
A. The chinampas have benefited from urbanization.
B. Many farmers are using new farming technology.
C. Farming affects the environment in Mexico badly.
D. Farming is less profitable than tourism in Xochimilco.
13. What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about Garduno
A. Her relationship with her family. B. The trouble she had in buying land.
C Her efforts to protect agricultural land. D. The challenges she met when learning farming.
14. What is the purpose of using Etiqueta Chinampera
A. To show the date of production. B. To indicate the food origin.
C. To tell the price of the food. D. To explain the cooking method.
15. What is Zambrano’s attitude to building soccer fields on chinampas
A. Positive. B. Unconcerned. C. Disapproving. D. Unclear.

It was Labor Day weekend, the last weekend in a summer full of outdoor adventures with my grandson. Twelve-year-old Noah and I headed up north to go whitewater rafting (漂流). It was my idea. I’d gone rafting dozens of times.
We arrived at the meet-up spot near Pembine, Wisconsin. Our guide, Derek, fit us with life jackets and helmets (头盔). Along with the other six rafters, two women and four men, we boarded the bus with our driver, who took us to the starting spot on the Menominee River.
The first section of the trip was flat water, and Derek used the time to review the safety instructions and practice paddling (划水) together. We all listened carefully, including Noah.
The next section was Class 2 rapids, which means “some rough water and rocks”. Only a basic skill level was required. We got wet. Everyone was laughing.
The last section was Class 4 rapids, which are waves, rocks, sharp bends and a considerable drop. “Exceptional” skill level was required.
Off we went. Derek was calling out paddling instructions. However, the people paddling on the left were paddling way harder than the people on the right, so we crashed straight into a giant rock face. The force caused me out of the raft.
My helmet dropped, and I was trapped under the raft. I was really, really scared. After a frightening amount of time, the raft and I separated. But now I was going down the “considerable drop” all by myself. Whitewater crashed over my face. I thought I was going to die.
Noah was screaming, “Grandma! Grandma! Grandma!” Derek was shouting at me, “Nose up, feet up!” He shouted at the rafters to paddle hard.

Hello, everyone! Wildlife is an essential part of nature, making an irreplaceable contribution to the diversity of ecosystems. However, with the continuous expansion of human activities, the living environment of wild animals is facing unprecedented threats.
We must realize that wildlife conservation is not just the responsibility of environmental organizations — every citizen should be involved. We can start small, such as reducing the use of single-use plastic products to cut the pollution of animal habitats, participating in or supporting wildlife conservation projects and reporting illegal hunting and trafficking of wild animals.
Only by working together can we leave a vibrant and diverse world for future generations.
That’s all. Thank you!

They finally got close to me. Derek reached over and grabbed the shoulders of my life jacket. “One, two, three,” he said and hauled me into the back of the raft.
