Florianopolis Destination Guide
Located in southern Brazil, Florianopolis is a top destination for surfers and beach-goers. However, there are
some old-world fishing villages, adventure sports, and amazing seafood restaurants to experience here as well. Here
are the top things you need to know before visiting this budget-friendly destination.
Must-see Attractions
The beaches are the top reason to visit Florianopolis, which has been named the party destination of the year
by New York Times. One of the best places to party is Lagoa de Concei āo. If you plan your trip during the annual
Santa Catarina Pro event, you can watch some of the world’s best surfers show off their stuff. There are over 40
beaches in Florianopolis, and the beaches in the south are generally less crowded.
Transportation
第 3页/共 12页
You can reach Florianopolis via Hercílio Luz International Airport, which is about 12 kilometers from the city
center. There are dozens of buses that go around the city and to the beaches. However, some of these bus routes

exploring this beautiful region much more enjoyable.
Money-saving Tips
● For cheap eats, look for restaurants where you pay by the kilo for your food.
● Research the local bus routes in advance and plan for stopovers if you want to avoid renting a car.
● Consider staying at a hostel and stocking the kitchen up with groceries from the local market.
Check out our homepage to view price comparisons for flights, hotels, and rental cars before you book.

I have a strong faith that the pain is almost gone but the feeling of success will stay forever. I was among the
38,000 runners who participated in the marathon, the largest event of its kind in Asia.
My decision to participate in the marathon was because of the persistent encouragement of my wife, who had
run the half-marathon previously. This year, she wanted me to participate along with her. Unexpectedly, her
application got rejected while mine got accepted.
Though I had been into fitness training before, running 21 km seemed like climbing a towering mountain. I
started training about 10 weeks before the day. I had made up my mind to finish the run. So I tried my best to get
training into my busy schedule whenever I could.
What’s more, I remembered that four weeks into my training, my shoes were worn. I searched and hunted and
spent a fortune on a new pair of shoes. However, right on the first day of running with them, I felt that they were
not for me. I persevered, thinking that my discomfort was because the shoes were new. Eventually, I gave up on
them. I even tried looking for another new pair of shoes, but couldn’t find that were as comfortable as my old ones.
第 4页/共 12页
Finally, on 16th January, I ran and completed the half-marathon. And I did it in my old shoes.
Now, when I think about it, it all seems so easy. All I had to do was picture competing the run in good time in
my mind.
What I have learned from the experience is that completing a marathon is like any other goal in life —
largely a mind-over-matter phenomenon. In other words, unless you believe you can reach your goal, you’ve lost
even before you begin. No doubt, factors such as hard work, experience and talent help to a greater or lesser degree.
But without your belief that you will get there, every goal remains difficult to achieve.
4. What made the author take part in the marathon
A. His wife’s support. B. His passion for running.
C. His desire for new shoes. D. His previous marathon experience.
5. What did the author think of the marathon at first
A. It’s interesting. B. It’s challenging.
C. It’s meaningful. D. It’s hopeful.
6. Which word can best describe the author
A. Friendly. B. Intelligent. C. Determined. D. Responsible.
7. What may be the best title for the text
A. The Power of Belief B. The Perfect Running Shoes
C. The Unexpected Adventure D. The Key to Finishing Marathon
C
The annual Great Backyard Bird Count is almost upon us. Each year, from February 16 to19, people around
the world count the birds they see outside for as little as 15 minutes and share their list of sightings. Scientists can
then use the data to better understand global bird populations.
People new to bird-watching are welcome to participate in the count. Master naturalist, Aaron Tremper, told
about the joy of bird-watching and tips for beginners.
Birds have evolved (进化) so many behaviors and physical traits to help them take advantage of their habitats.
kinds of birds you’ll see really depend on the habitats that are near you. So what you’re seeing is unique to where
you live.
You can help inform the scientists about birds by logging what you see during bird-watching. Some apps about
bird-watching use the data for studies on bird migration (迁移) and population numbers. This, in turn, can help
with bird conservation.
第 5页/共 12页
For first-time birders, you don’t need any equipment. There are free resources to help you understand what
you’re seeing. You can find information on different bird species and their songs online and through the library or
free apps for identifying birds. Once you get a feel for it, you can buy binoculars (双筒望远镜) and field guides.
Despite the valuable insights gained from the Great Backyard Bird Count, conducting research in this field
does come with its challenges. One major difficulty scientists face is the vastness of bird habitats and the migratory
patterns of different species. Tracking and monitoring birds across various regions can be complex and
resource-intensive. Additionally, accurately analyzing the data collected from bird-watching activities requires
advanced statistical methods and expertise. However, scientists remain hopeful that the collective efforts of citizen
scientists during events like the Great Backyard Bird Count will provide crucial data to enhance the understanding
of bird populations and contribute to effective conservation strategies.
8. Why is the event Great Backyard Bird Count held
A. To provide the joy of bird-watching.
B. To help with scientific research.
C. To let people know birds’ evolution.
D. To share the experience of feeding birds.
9. What can we know about birds’ habitats according to the text
A. They are difficult to build. B. They are changeable seasonally.
C. They can prevent bird migration. D. They can influence bird species.
10. What role can the birdwatchers play
A. Interviewing scientists. B. Protecting birds.
C. Processing data. D. Developing apps.
11. What is the scientists’ attitude to the bird-watching activities
A. Uncaring. B. Unclear. C. Doubtful. D. Supportive.

The destructive impact of fast fashion on the environment is widely documented. So how can we, as
consumers, reduce our fashion footprints One obvious answer is to buy less. Another is to buy clothes that have
been more sustainably made, using organic and recycled materials. Hiring clothes is another way to get new pieces
for our wardrobes (衣柜). But buying second-hand may be the simplest solution and a trend that is growing fast.
According to a consulting company in Boston, second-hand clothes are projected to make up about 27 per cent
of customers’ wardrobes in the coming few years. By 2030, the second-hand clothing market is projected to be
第 6页/共 12页
twice the size of fast fashion, according to a global report. So, it seems that the next ten years will see the resale
market grow fast, and this is in part because we now have more options than simply buying from charity shops and
jumble sales. Online sites are making it easier to both buy and sell pre-loved items.
It also helps that the perception of pre-loved clothing has changed. Dr Amna Khan, senior lecturer in
consumer behaviors and retail at Manchester Metropolitan University, said, “It has become a trend to wear
second-hand clothes, and it’s no longer a case of only buying them if you can’t afford anything else.” The changing
values of shoppers are even being seen in celebrity culture, with television personalities promoting second-hand
clothing.
Not everyone is convinced that these changes in shopping habits will do enough to reduce our fashion
footprints. The charity Wrap tells people to mend clothes they already have in their wardrobes before buying new
ones, even if they are second-hand. But it’s clear that some consumers now want to consume less and make more
environmentally friendly choices when they do buy. The fashion industry is therefore having to change, and the
second-hand market is the star of the show.
12. Which is a benefit of buying second-hand clothes
A. Promoting fast fashion. B. Developing the economy.
C. Protecting the environment. D. Collecting recycled materials.
13. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A. The convenience of online sites.
B. The diverse clothing options of charity shops.
C. The current market share of second-hand clothes.
D. The prospect of the second-hand clothing market.
14. What do Dr Amna Khan’s words imply
A. It’s normal that shoppers can’t afford new clothes.
B. Most television personalities prefer second-hand clothes.
C. Customers’ opinions on second-hand clothes have changed.
D. Many shoppers have developed the same consumption concept.
15. What does the underlined word “mend” in the last paragraph mean
A. Count. B. Store. C. Decorate. D. Repair.

Mrs Hill, an elderly woman, lived alone in a peaceful neighborhood. Her children had moved away, and she
spent her days tending to her beloved garden—a place of peace and beauty. However, as time passed, the tasks that
once came easily to her became increasingly difficult. The garden began to show signs of neglect (忽视), with
overgrown bushes and weeds creeping (蔓延) into the flower bed.
George, a young college student living next door, noticed Mrs Hill struggling to cut back the bushes. George,
who had always admired the garden, felt a sense of sympathy and decided to help. He walked over and asked, “Hey,
Mrs Hill, do you need a hand with that ” Surprised but grateful, Mrs Hill admitted, “I didn’t realize it had become
so hard for me.” George reassured her, “Don’t worry. I can help you out.”
From that day on, George decided to help Mrs Hill in his spare time. He did some physical work, and even
fixed some of the old furniture in her house. Mrs Hill was touched by his kindness, and with George’s help, her
home and garden began to look beautiful again. George also accompanied Mrs Hill on shopping trips, carrying
heavy bags and helping her choose fresh produce. Her face lit up with happiness whenever he visited, and she felt
less lonely and more capable of managing her daily life.
As weeks turned into months, a deep bond formed between them. Mrs Hill became a mentor to George,
sharing stories from her past and offering wisdom and guidance he had never received before. She taught him the
importance of patience, kindness, and perseverance. George listened intently, realizing that Mrs Hill’s life
experience was valuable.
However, just as their friendship was blossoming, Mrs Hill fell ill and was hospitalized. George felt a deep

46.Dear Steven,
Last Sunday, I visited an art exhibition, which was truly inspiring. The exhibition showcased a variety of
modern art pieces, including paintings, sculptures, and digital art. I spent about two hours exploring the different
sections, and I was particularly impressed by a series of abstract paintings that used vibrant colors to express
emotions. The process of viewing each piece and reading the descriptions helped me understand the artists’
intentions better. This experience not only broadened my artistic horizons but also deepened my appreciation for
modern art.
I hope that you can visit it too when you have time.

47. George went to the hospital to visit Mrs Hill. He found her lying in bed, looking pale and weak. Seeing
George, Mrs Hill smiled faintly. “I’m sorry I can’t take care of my garden,” she said sadly. George took her hand
gently and said, “Don’t worry, Mrs Hill. I’ll take care of it for you.” Mrs Hill looked at him gratefully and said,
“Thank you, George. You’ve been such a good friend to me.” George promised to visit her regularly and help with
anything she needed.
As he had promised Mrs Hill, George began to tidy up the garden. He pulled out the weeds, trimmed the overgrown
bushes, and watered the flowers. As he worked, he thought about Mrs Hill and how much the garden meant to her.
He wanted to make it look beautiful again for her return. After several days of hard work, the garden was
transformed into a colorful paradise. The flowers bloomed, and the bushes were neatly trimmed. George stood back
and admired his work, feeling a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction.
