Sloths (树懒) live in the forests of South and Central America. They move so slowly that some special plants (grow on their bodies. They give the sloths a green color that helps them to hide from danger in the forest.
This green is a “lucky color” for sloths. That’s because most of them are too slow to run away from danger. And they are even slower on the ground than they are in the trees. Some walk only four meters every minute on the ground.
Why do sloths move so slowly It has a lot to do with their food. Sloths may all look the same to us. But there are in fact two main types of sloths. One has two toes (趾) and the other has three toes. The two-toed sloths eat both plants and insects. And the three-toed sloths only eat tree leaves and some fruits. Leaves and fruits provide very little energy. Evans Wadongo was from a village of Africa. He had to do homework by the light of a kerosene lamp (煤油灯). Evans’ eyes hurt and this made studying difficult. It was common in his village. Many children left school for this reason, so they remained poor for the rest of their lives.
Although studying was difficult, Evans was an excellent student and went to a university. He continued to worry about the kerosene lamp.
