The first time I met Jane, we became best friends. We enjoyed the same things. We were excited to find each other. Our families became friends and everyone knew wherever you found Jane, you found me. Jane was at my house quite often that summer. We played and practised flutes (长笛) .
When school began, we talked on the phone and went over to each other’s houses. Then it seemed as if we were put to a test. We both made new friends. Jane started to hang out with hers. We seldom talked on the phone. When we did take a minute to talk, one of her new friends would come up and Jane would walk away with her, leaving me hurt.
I’m sure she didn’t know how bad I felt. I began to hang around with my new friends, but it wasn’t the same. I met Erma, also a friend of Jane’s. She was in the same situation. We decided to talk to Jane.
The call was not easy. However, when we talked on the phone, we were friends again. I explained my feelings and so did she. I realized I was not the only one hurting. She also felt left out. There were times when I didn’t even notice I was ignoring her. We talked for a long time and I felt a heavy weight lifted off my heart. I felt so happy. We decided we wanted to be with our new friends, but would never forget the fun and friendship we had.
Today, I look back on all of this. Jane is not my best friend anymore, but more like my sister. We still enjoy the same things. Jane taught me that things change, people change but it doesn’t mean you forget the past. It simply means you move on and treasure all the memories.

A half dozen women, in their 30s, 40s and 50s, gather in a classroom in Phoenix for a few hours on a weekday morning. They are all caregivers of young children and participants in an Arizona state-funded initiative called Kith and Kin. The program aims to give family, friend and neighbor caregivers the kind of training that licensed (领有许可证的) caregivers are required to have.
A study in the south Phoenix area found that 60% of children from birth to 5 years old were being cared for outside of licensed child care settings. That study led the nonprofit organization Candelen to launch Kith and Kin in 1999. “There was the high need to provide both training and support in communities where families with young children live,” says program director Angela Tapia.
Now, 25 years later, programs like Kith and Kin are getting renewed attention on account of the fragile (脆弱的) state of the child care industry. There’s increased urgency from policymakers and businesses to ensure communities have access to affordable, high- quality child care, paving the way for parents, especially women, to work.
The sessions are paid for by Arizona’s government. While most federal(联邦制的)and state funding for child care industry in the U.S. goes to licensed settings, Arizona is one of a number of states that have long recognized the importance of informal caregiving arrangements that are allowing millions of parents to go to work.
Such arrangements are especially common in immigrant communities, where many parents hold jobs with nontraditional hours and prefer caregivers who share their language and culture.
Candelen estimates it trains about 1,000 caregivers a year. Melinda Gulick, CEO of Arizona’s early childhood agency First Things First, says the funding is recognition that all children, regardless of where they spend their first years, deserve a high quality early childhood experience. “For many parents, the best place for children to be is with their aunts or their grandmothers or their neighbors,” she says.

Hundreds of emperor penguin chicks jumped off a 15- meter cliff, as high as a five- story building. This scene was captured by drones in January at Atka Bay, Antarctica, and was put out recently in a documentary series called Secrets of the Penguins.
This jump seems brave but could be lethal to these young penguins.
According to National Geographic, emperor penguins usually raise their chicks on sea ice platforms. Not long after they turn 5 months old, the chicks have to begin their first swim in the ocean to hunt for themselves. Normally, they just need to jump from the sea ice, which is less than a meter high.
However, the fast-melting ice in Antarctica changes the situation. The Antarctic summer sea ice has decreased sharply since 2016, reported the BBC in February 2023, the total area of sea ice reached a record low of 1.91 million square kilometers.
Emperors depend on sea ice for their breeding cycle. It’s the stable platform they use to bring up their young. Peter Fretwell from the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), told the BBC. If the ice platform melts or breaks apart before they could swim, they are more likely to drown or freeze to death. For this reason emperor penguins are now choosing to raise their babies on the ice shelf, which is firmly attached to the land. Therefore, chicks must face the challenge of jumping off a high cliff.
“When the chicks get to this cliff face, they’re like... ‘This does not look like a fun jump, but I guess I’m gonna have to go’,” Michelle LaRue, a scientist at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, told National Geographic.
“Alarmingly, the decline in the ice has caused thousands of emperor penguin chicks to die in West Antarctica in 2022. The continuing decline of sea ice may force more emperors to make their nests on ice shelves, ” said Fretwell. “It’s heartbreaking to think that the whole species may be gone if climate change continues on the path that it’s on at the moment,” he added.

An Angel on a Snowy Night
The wind was blowing hard as I was driving down the twists and turns of the country road. I was desperate to get home before dark, but there seemed no way.
