To be honest, I didn't want to go to the Jahoo Ecotourism Camp in Cambodia with my parents. I hated hot, wet weather, and I was not interested in nature. Yet in May 2023, I had to board the plane with them to the camp.
We were taken to the heart of Keo Seima Wildlife Sanctuary, where we joined wildlife experts and guides to experience Bunong culture and see endangered primates(灵长目动物)-in the rainforest.
The Bunong people live near a forest that no one owns, and to protect it, they agreed to take only what they need and avoid deforestation. Upon arrival, I was welcomed by the Jahoo community and felt at ease despite the frightening forest.
After the introductions, we were taken on a personal tour of the grounds; and I was amazed by the buildings made of bamboo. Dirt paths wound around the camp's buildings, and everything was open to encompass (包含) nature. That first night,I lay in my bamboo room with an open roof, greeted by millions of stars and the beautiful sounds of nature that helped carry me to sleep.
The next morning, we walked through the forest. A strange sound came from the distance, and I felt very scared. The tour guide told us it was a gibbon's(长臂猿的) call.
Our tour guide found a place for us to watch small gibbons. I took my binoculars for a close-up look. A fluffy ( 毛 茸 茸 的 ) golden female sat on a tree branch, sunbathing and eating her breakfast. Soon, two baby gibbons followed her, swinging(纵身跃向) from branch to branch like fluffy balls of energy, not slowing for a moment. I was amazed at the sight.
In the following days,we visited several small villages, where I learned more about local culture, The trip opened my eyes to the beauty around me, and I totally forgot the hot and wet weather.
24. What did the author find about the Bunong people
A. They have a forest. B. They respect nature.
C. They dream of modern buildings. D. They heavily depend on farming.
25. What impressed the author about the gibbons
A. Their large size. B. Their ability to fly.
C. Their unique colors. D. Their energetic behavior.
26. What is the best title for the text
A. A trip with gibbons B. A journey of discovery
C. Exploring nature's wonders D. Discovering traditional cultures

When you live in the driest state in the driest country in the world, bushfires are an unfortunate, and all-too-regular part of life. Learning how to survive such emergencies is important for all people, especially for our youngest citizens.
Now, an immersive VR( 沉 浸 式 虚 拟 现 实 的 ) experience developed by the University of South Australia (UniSA) is educating children about bushfires and helping them learn how to be safer when a bushfire happens.
Focusing on children aged 10-12 years, the new VR experience presents a scenario (场景) where children are tasked to look after a friend's dog just before a fire begins. They take part in a series of problem-solving activities to help save and protect themselves and the dog.
Published in the Journal of Educational Computing Research, the research proved how immersive VR experience can bring significant positive learning results for primary children. The findings showed that after the VR experience, more than 80 per cent of children agreed or strongly agreed that they felt more confident to calmly consider the options and make wise decisions to protect themselves from a a bushfire.
This was especially significant considering that 91 per cent of children previously lacked any knowledge of fires, and that 67 per cent had said they were too young to make safety decisions in a fire.
The project is part of Safa Molan' s PhD project. Her supervisor and fellow researcher (导师和研究员同事),UniSA's Professor Delene Weber, says immersive VR experience has huge potential to engage, educate and empower younger generations: Since they are born into the digital age, they are easily drawn to technology, and when it' s immersive like VR, they can experience events as they are in real life, but still stay safe.
“Well-designed VR can provide an opportunity for children to apply ( 应 用 ) newly acquired knowledge, strengthen their understanding, and enable immediate feedback (反馈). In this scenario, we applied the best in terms of VR and educational design, showing how VR can achieve higher-order learning skills. This immersive VR technology could potentially be used for other disasters such as floods or war environments," says Professor Weber.
27. What does the immersive VR experience focus on
A. Preparing children for survival skills in a bushfire.
B. Training children to search and rescue dogs in bushfires.
C. Encouraging children to help their parents in emergencies.
D. Teaching children the causes and effects of natural disasters.
28. What can we learn about the children from the figures in paragraph 4
A. They have experienced real bushfires.
B. They have benefited from the VR experience.
C. They couldn' t think wisely during the VR experience.
D. They didn' t realize knowledge of fires was important at first.
29. What does the underlined word “engage” in paragraph 5 mean
A. Remind. B. Challenge. C. Cheer up. D. Appeal to.
30. What does Professor Weber think of the future of immersive VR technology
A. It will provide timely warning if disasters happen.
B. It will be quickly spread to schools worldwide.
C. It is expected to be used in other emergencies.
D. It may replace traditional safety education.

When I was seven years old, my family moved from Mexico to America. In Mexico, I was a cheerful girl who loved making people laugh with my jokes and inventing fun games to play with my friends. However, when I arrived in America, I found it hard to fit in, and I became quieter.
We lived in a small house with a modest yard where we grew vegetables—my responsibility. While I took pride in watching them grow, there were times when I dreamed of having a beautiful garden like my schoolmate Luella's, with its delicate tulips (郁金香). Although Luella lived in the same neighborhood as me, we barely knew each other.
It was after a tornado that Luella and I finally became close friends.
The tornado struck on a Sunday afternoon. The gentle breeze transformed into a strong wind, and thick gray clouds filled the sky. Gradually, the tornado took shape, starting as a thin rope and growing into a large black funnel(漏斗) . My entire family gathered in the bathroom, seeking shelter from the storm. Terrified, I sat close to my mom, knees in my chest. After the storm had passed, our worries and fears were replaced by relief that we were unharmed and that our house had remained undamaged.
As I stepped outside, I witnessed the extent of the damage the tornado had caused to our neighborhood. Across the street, a tall tree had fallen, crushing Luella's garden in front of her yellow house. We hurried over to check on it. Fortunately, her family seemed to be away at the time, and no one was injured. However, her once-beautiful garden was in ruins, with the fallen tree destroying the tulips and debris(碎片 )spread everywhere. I could only imagine how heartbroken they must feel seeing this.
Then my mom's usual words rang in my ear, "It is more blessed to give than to receive,” and my family started to think about how we could help.

My Favorite Book
My favorite book is The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. It is set in the 1920s, a time of great prosperity and excess in America.
The story mainly revolves around Jay Gatsby, a wealthy and mysterious man. Gatsby throws lavish parties in the hope of attracting the attention of his former lover, Daisy Buchanan. However, Daisy is married to Tom Buchanan, and their complex relationships lead to a tragic ending.
I highly recommend this book. First, it provides a vivid picture of the Jazz Age, showing the hollowness beneath the glittering surface of that era. Second, the themes of love, wealth, and the American Dream are explored in a profound way. It makes readers think about the true meaning of happiness and success.

My Favorite Novel
My favorite piece of literature is the novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee. This powerful story is set in the 1930s American South and revolves around young Scout Finch, her brother Jem, and their father Atticus, a lawyer defending a black man falsely accused of a crime. The novel delves into themes of racial injustice, moral growth, and empathy.
I recommend this novel because it not only provides valuable lessons about human nature and justice but also encourages readers to stand up against prejudice. It’s a timeless piece that resonates with all generations.
续写
Para. 1
Just at that moment, Luella's family returned in their car. The sight of the disorder in the garden was like an invisible hammer, striking Luella‘s heart. Tears started to stream down the cheeks. I could sense how heart-broken she was faced with such a mess. So I proposed cleaning the ruined garden together, which was approved of by my parents and Luella’s. The next few hours witnessed all of us sweating for the clean-up: dads cutting and removing the fallen tree, moms in charge of sweeping the debris and we kids responsible for rescuing the surviving tulips. By working hard, we managed to restore the order of the garden in the end.
Para. 2
Even after the debris was cleared, I could still sense Luella's sorrow for her lost garden. Looking at the surviving tulips in my hands, I came up with an idea that we rebuilt the garden with the remaining tulips as well as the vegetables in my own garden. As expected, it received support from my parents. After a brief discussion, the reconstruction kicked off. It did not take that long before the garden regained colors and vitality. Admittedly, the restored garden was overshadowed, compared with the one before the tornado, but it witnessed the friendship between our two families. As mother often said, giving could bring happiness. It was from that day on that Luella and I became close friends!
