For decades, Jean Moffatt has been reaching out over the airwaves. As an amateur (业余的) radio operator, Moffatt has connected with people worldwide. “By sending signals to satellites, I’ve talked to people from the Arctic to the Antarctic,” Moffatt said. And on Wednesday at the Ontario Science Centre, the 96-year-old got to go even further.
An amateur radio connection allowed the senior and students to speak with Commander Luca aboard the International Space Station. By connection, Moffatt told the astronaut (宇航员) she was very excited, admitting that this was an unrealized dream she had for many years. Then Moffatt asked if Luca could keep the space station clean and tidy, adding that as a “mature woman” she had done lots of cleaning in her life.
When Moffatt was a young girl, she moved to Toronto with her family, hoping there would be chances for a girl interested in science. She desperately wanted to go to university, but moving house placed a significant burden on their finances. Not discouraged, she took a course in amateur radio, then a popular technology, and shortly after she got her license. After retiring, Moffatt started volunteering at the Ontario Science Centre. With her radio license, she helped set up the centre’s first radio shack (无线电设备室) .
The idea to connect with the International Space Station came just after Moffatt’s 36th birthday. Finally after 60 years with the help of amateur radio operators and NASA, Moffatt made her connection. While the connection wasn’t very clear, she was moved to tears, telling those who had gathered to watch that it was the “highlight” of her life.
Moffatt plans to keep volunteering at the centre, introducing younger people to the older form of technology, and to keep speaking to anyone who can pick up her signal. “It’s a technology even older than me and I love amateur radio, ” Moffatt added.

From clever tool use to complex songs, many bird behaviors are known to be transmitted (传播) socially and persist across generations, which scientists define as animal “culture”. Now a study suggests culture might play a role in bird architecture (建筑艺术), too.
Researchers analyzed more than 400 structures (结构) built by 43 different groups of sparrows in the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa. These birds live and work together to build a nest (鸟巢) and many shelters from grass. The group’s dominant female then lays eggs in the nest, which has a long, tube-like entrance. Individual birds sleep nearby in the U-shaped shelters, which have both an entrance and an exit.
The scientists found that different gatherings of birds, even those living only a few meters from one another, built very different tube structures. “The largest diversity was in how short or long the structures are,” says study lead author Maria C. Tello-Ramos, a cognitive ecologist at the University of Hull in England, “Tube width also varied among groups.” Furthermore, when outsiders joined, they adapted to this style.
To examine why the groups built differently, the team analyzed factors that can determine a nest for a given bird species: weather conditions, tree height, individuals’ body size and genetic relatedness. Yet, the result startled the team that none of these factors seemed to play a relevant role in shaping how the Kalahari sparrows built their nests, which the researchers reported in Science.
“Okay, so what is left ” Tello-Ramos and her team explain. “Cultural transmission might be the key to nest building. In our paper, we haven’t gotten there yet with experiments, but we have very good clues that indicate the key might be it.” Christina Riehl, an evolutionary biologist at Princeton University, says, “Though there aren’t enough experiments, I think the study will inspire future research in a really good way and offers a great starting point for deeper dives into how culture shapes birds’ building behaviors.”

TikTok is changing how young people talk. Informal expressions are on the rise: members of Gen Z say “yapping” instead of “talking”. New words have also become popular. Take “skibidi”, a term that became popular everywhere due to a widely shared video of a singing head in a toilet, for example; it means “cool”, “bad” or “very”, depending on the context.
On social apps words spread far and fast. At least 100 English words are produced or given new meanings on TikTok a year. Some language professors think TikTok is changing not just what youngsters are saying, but how they are saying it. A “TikTok speech style”, which includes “uptalk”, a sound that rises at the end of sentences, may be spreading. TikTok’s many different functions promote creative exploration. Users can mix audio, text and video in a single post. That means words that sound especially pleasant can become popular, as well as those that are impressive in written form. A system called “algospeak” has appeared to avoid content limitations. It uses indirect language (drug users are called “candy lovers”), and misspellings (“drog” instead of drug).
The change of language on TikTok is also due, in large part, to the age of its users. Most are18-34 years old. That matters because “Young people are language pioneers, ” says Christian llbury, a professor at the University of Edinburgh. For decades youngsters have created words to make themselves different from adults. On social apps such new terms find a big audience. Mr llbury describes this as “language-based identity work”.
The app brings together fan groups and communities, from kpopfans (people who like Korean pop music) to booktokers (people who love reading). These groups create their own slang (俚语) . Some of it makes its way into the mainstream. Other slang comes from specific groups: black people have created and spread hundreds of English words over the years, from “cool” to “tea” (gossip) . News reporters and screenwriters spread such words; now TikTokers do, too.
