It’s wonderful to be back in my boyhood hometown again to visit my now elderly mother. It seems like centuries ago when I was growing up here. Mom is doing great for her age, but she’s moving more slowly these days. After a lengthy but heart-warming talk in our little house about my wife, the kids and how well my work is going in the big city far from here, I decide to have a look around the neighborhood to see how things have changed, and how things have stayed the same.
It’s only a short walk to reach the old retired doctor’s house, whose grasses I cut weekly. He usually paid me a small amount of money to help maintain his large yard. We always enjoyed talking as we worked together. I don’t remember exactly all that we talked about, but I do remember that he always listened and I felt appreciated.
Just three houses away from the doctor’s home is her house. She was so lovely with pretty hair. I usually rode past her house after school to see whether I might find her outside where I could perhaps, just perhaps, have the chance to talk with her. I was not sure what to say given the chance. But it was worth the risk. It was too bad that she never really noticed me at school, even though we shared the same classes. I wonder where she is now...
Oh, there is the special tree! It was here that I found a refuge when I felt disheartened. Sometimes, I would spend almost the entire day climbing around in it alone. I also loved climbing to the very top of the tree and stayed there without being disturbed. I’m glad my mother never knew how high I dared to climb.
It’s been decades since those days of boyhood exploration. Although everything is different now, nothing has changed. It is still a wonderful little town where I had learned, without realizing I was learning, the most important things before I adventured into a bigger world.
24.How did the author most probably feel when he was with the doctor
A.Threatened. B.Encouraged. C.Amused. D.Undervalued.
25.What can we know about the author as a boy from paragraph 3
A.He was repeatedly ignored by his classmates.
B.He was a trouble-maker in his neighborhood.
C.He had to work very hard to support his family.
D.He even did not have the courage to talk to the girl.
26.Which best explains the word “refuge” underlined in paragraph 4
A.A large building where the sick are treated.
B.An area where adults go to enjoy themselves.
C.A place that protects people from unhappiness.
D.A piece of public land used for a particular purpose.
27.What is the best title for the text
A.A Visit to My Hometown B.Sweet Memories of My First Love
C.My Boyhood Adventures D.Lessons Learned From Tree Climbing

Think back to the last time when you wrote down a quick note or made a grocery list. Chances are that it wasn’t with pen and paper. Over the past decade, keyboards and screens have quietly replaced handwriting in our daily routines, from classrooms to office meetings. Some schools around the world have even stopped teaching handwriting altogether.
Yet, research shows that putting pen to paper offers cognitive (认知的) benefits that digital tools can’t bring.
The benefits of writing by hand can partly be due to the engagement of multiple senses in the writing process. “Holding a pen with our fingers, pressing it on a surface, and moving our hands to create letters and words is a complex cognitive-motor skill that requires a lot of our attention,” says Mellissa Prunty, who has researched the relationship between handwriting and learning. “This deeper level of processing, which involves mapping sounds to letter formations, has been shown to support reading and spelling in children.”
Adults also benefit from the labor-intensive nature of handwriting. A study involving 42 adults learning Arabic found that participants who learned letters by writing them down by hand were quicker to recognize them, had an easier time naming them, and were better at sounding the newly learned letters out compared with people who were asked to learn the new characters by typing or by just looking at them.
In Norway, many schools stopped teaching handwriting, instead opting for pupils to write and read on an iPad, a trend van der Meer, a professor at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, hopes to change. “I think we should have at least a minimum of handwriting in primary school simply because it is so good for the developing brain,” she says.
What’s your idea Why not take out a piece of paper and write to us
28.What phenomenon is mainly described in paragraph 1
A.The harmful effects of digital tools are obvious.
B.Digital tools bring much convenience to students.
C.Handwriting makes a comeback in a digital world.
D.Handwriting has become less common in daily life.
29.How does the author prove that handwriting benefits adults
A.By making several assumptions. B.By recalling personal experiences.
C.By showing the results of a study. D.By comparing them with children.
30.What is van der Meer’s attitude towards the trend in many schools in Norway
A.Unclear. B.Disapproving. C.Indifferent. D.Tolerant.
31.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A.To criticize a traditional way of learning.
B.To offer useful tips on better handwriting.
C.To analyze some problems with education.
D.To encourage the preservation of handwriting.

Two researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Alex Robel and Shi Joyce Sim, have worked on a new model for how water moves under glaciers (冰川). The new theory shows that up to twice the amount of under-glacier water that was originally predicted might be flowing into the ocean-potentially increasing glacial melting (融化), sea level rise, and so on.
While there are pre-existing methods to understand under-glacier flow, these techniques involve time-consuming computations. Robel and Sim developed a simple solution, which can predict how fast exfiltration (渗漏) is, using satellite measurements of Antarctica from the last two decades. Robel explains, “Previously, people would run a model, which would have to be applied at every point under Antarctica, and then run forward over a long time period. Now the entirety of our prediction can be done in a second on a computer.”
The potentially large source of under-glacier water-possibly up to double the amount previously thought-could be affecting how quickly glacial ice flows and how quickly the ice melts at its base. Robel and Sim hope that the predictions made possible by this theory can be included into ice sheet models that scientists use to predict future ice sheet change and sea level rise.
Beyond sea level rise, this additional exfiltration and melting has other possible future effects. Some of the places of richest ocean productivity in the world occur off the coast of Antarctica, and being able to better predict exfiltration and melting could help ocean biologists better understand where ocean productivity is occurring, and how it might change in the future.
Robel also hopes this work will open the doorway to more cooperation with groundwater hydrologists who may be able to apply their knowledge to ice sheet dynamics, while Sim stresses the need for more fieldwork. “Getting the observationalists interested in trying to help us better understand the qualities of ice sheets would produce a dramatic effect,” Sim says. “That’s our largest unknown at this point, and it heavily influences the results.”
32.What is the new model used to study
A.The risk of sea level rise. B.The changes of ocean ecosystems.
C.The speed of glacial melting. D.The flow of water beneath glaciers.
33.How does the author show the advantage of the new model
A.By analyzing facts. B.By referring to figures.
C.By giving examples. D.By making a comparison.
34.What does the author stress about the additional exfiltration and melting
A.It gets attention in many places. B.It may influence more than one field.
C.It is responsible for sea level rise. D.It has been considered by biologists.
35.Which can be a suitable title for the text
A.An In-depth Study of Antarctic Glaciers B.A Prediction of the Future of Glaciers
C.A Big Discovery About Under-glacier Flow D.A New Model Invented to Monitor Glaciers
第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)
As a high school student, you’re likely used to learning through reading textbooks. 36 This lies at the heart of “experiential (由经验得来的) appreciation”, a philosophy that encourages you to engage directly with the world around you. It’s about learning from real-life experiences, and discovering a more profound and engaging way to learn.
To practice experiential appreciation, you can start by getting involved in hands-on activities related to your subjects. They will provide a firsthand understanding of the concepts you’re studying, making learning active and meaningful. So, try joining a sports team, picking up a paintbrush, or taking part in a local charity event. 37
As you dive deeper, immerse (沉浸) yourself fully in the surroundings and activities. When you’re in nature, don’t just look around. 38 Touching the leaves, feeling the wind and listening to the birds can enrich your learning and make each moment more memorable.
39 After trying something new, ask yourself what you learned and how it made you feel. Write in a journal or discuss it with friends. This self-discovery turns experiences into life lessons and offers a deeper understanding of the world.
Experiential appreciation transforms learning from a task to be completed into a journey to be treasured. 40 So, explore the world around you, let every experience shape you, and discover the endless possibilities that await. This is the core of true learning, where every moment is a step towards a richer, more enlightened life.
A.Now consider expanding your learning from just reading to actively participating.
B.It extends learning far beyond textbooks.
C.Instead, activate your senses for a stronger tie with it.
D.Mind the impact of your actions on the environment.
E.Take your experiences further by reflecting on them.
F.Textbooks offer a systematic introduction to essential concepts and principles.
G.These activities bring learning to life.

Mrs. Smith knew something was wrong with 7-year-old Miguel. He was one of her best students and a very hardworking child. But Intely, he was failing his tests and no longer seemed focused on his studies. Mrs. Smith couldn’t quite put her finger on what was wrong with the young boy. She knew his family had immigrated to America from South Afrien, and she reasoned they were probably in some sort of trouble.
One day, Mrs. Smith was walking back to her car after a long day at work and stopped in her tracks to see a tired Miguel on the streets. It took her a while to realize that the boy was sitting on a cardboard box with his homework spread out in front of him and studying. “Miguel!” she cried, approaching him. “What are you doing here, darling ” With tears streaming down his cheeks, Miguel poured out everything happening to him and his family.
Mrs. Smith was heartbroken as Miguel began sharing his story with her. He said that when they first arrived in the country, they were living with relatives, who had recently sold their house and moved to another city. His parents were now living in a shelter. Miguel didn’t have a desk or table to do his homework in the shelter, and it was too noisy. He said he couldn’t concentrate on his studies there and didn’t know where to go until he found a spot on the street behind the school.
Mrs. Smith knew she had to do something to help this less fortunate student. She arrived at school early the next day and arranged a small desk in the back of her classroom for Miguel. She also got him extra school supplies and the permit to stay back after lessons and do his homework in the classroom, for which Miguel was extremely grateful.
