Native plants planted by the State Botanical Garden of Georgia at the University of Georgia near the GA-10 Loop in Athens, Ga., are changing the area from being covered in kudzu back to a more natural state.
The project, funded by Keep Athens-Clarke County Beautiful, was planted in November 2021. Volunteers and students from the UGA College of Environment and Design all participated to plant the area along the entrance ramp (斜坡) next to the GA-10 Loop at Milledge Avenue.
Zach Wood, the grasslands coordinator (协调人) at the State Botanical Garden, said all the plants chosen for the project are native to Georgia. He said that they selected hardy species of plants they felt pretty confident would survive. In total, 22 native plant species are planted at the site.
“Native plants function to support their ecosystem, and that’s important because our roadsides are turning into monocultures of non-native species that don’t support our native wildlife,” Wood said.
He added that non-native species don’t filter (过滤) water as well as native species, which is significant on roadsides to handle stormwater runoff.
When they’ve checked on the plants, all the species planted were established and growing. Wood said there was concern the plants would succumb to drought, but the value of native plants is their ability to survive in stressful conditions.
The team doesn’t water the area at all.
“It would go against the spirit of doing it, “Wood said. “We’re trying to figure out the least effort to put native plants back into a place that’s been kind of beat up.”
“This project is so important because it’s so visible,” Wood said. “It’s going to demonstrate an alternative way of managing roadsides.”
“We’re always looking for ways to make things sustainable,” said Richard Littleton, state agronomist (农学家) manager at GDOT. “The more we can do that’s natural, it helps everything. It’s the right thing to do to be a good caretaker of our lands.”
24.Why was kudzu replaced

25.What does the underlined phrase “succumb to” in paragraph 6 mean

Charles Darwin found inspiration for his theory of evolution in birds' beaks, giant tortoise shells — and language. “The survival or preservation of certain favored words in the struggle for existence is natural selection, he wrote in The Descent of Man in 1871.
Language gradually shifts over time. Much research examines how social and environmental factors influence language change, but very little wrestles with the forces of human cognitive (selection that fix certain words into the vocabulary. For an extensive new study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA, scientists investigated just that.
The scientists carried out two experiments and the results combine to show three properties that give words an “evolutionary advantage” by helping them stick in the brain: First, words typically acquired at an early age such as “hand” or “today”) are stabler. Next, concrete words linger better than abstract ones: “dog” lasts longer than “animal,” which lasts longer than “organism.” Lastly, emotionally exciting words — whether negative or positive — tend to last.
Early language-evolution models assumed that language becomes increasingly complex over time. But this new study supports a more recent theory that language ultimately gets more efficient and easier to understand.
Still, as the study notes, “the English language is not baby talk.” One researcher explains: “Yes, we shift toward simple language, but then we also grab complex language that we need.” New words that address the complexity of modem life may somewhat balance out this shift.
The proposed trend toward “simpler” language is controversial. Columbia University linguist John MeWhorter more or less agrees with the study's results about evolutionary advantages within language. He questions, however, implications regarding the overall efficiency of English — a language he says contains things like “needlessly complex” grammatical traces.
Study lead author Ying Li, a psychologist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a non-native English speaker, notes that English had even more puzzling grammar in the past. MeWhorter, Li supposes, “would complain more if he traveled back 800 years ago.”
28.What does the underlined word “that” in the second paragraph refer to
A.The origin of certain favored words B.The social influence on language formation.
C.The cognitive control over language evolution. D.The environmental factor in language decline.
29.Which group may last longest according to the “evolutionary advantage”
A.Mother; cup; happy. B.Hope; trend; realism.
C.Metal; plastic; virus. D.Tax; smog; anxious.
30.Which statement is consistent with the findings of the new study
A.It gets harder to communicate in English.
B.New words tend to be shorter and simpler.
C.The complexity of English has been totally lost.
D.The efficiency of English improves as it evolves.
31.How does Ying Li respond to John MeWhorter's questioning
A.Li provides extra data. B.Li makes an assumption.
C.Li consults a historical authority. D.Li suggests a solution.

You jerk(猛然一动)awake in the middle of the night in confusion. Is there a figure standing in the corner of the room Your brain begs your legs to move, but nothing happens. The anxiety increases. Your eyes scan the room. Just as you’re about to hit peak panic, you sit up and the figure disappears.
You’ve just experienced sleep paralysis(瘫痪), which is the name experts give to all sorts of weird things that occur during sleep. It happens when the brain temporarily disables the body to prevent it from acting out the vivid dreams occurring during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. It often comes with a feeling of immobility, and a sense of choking. The good news is, it’s absolutely normal, even if it’s terrifying.
But when sleep paralysis happens outside of deep sleep—when a person is just dozing off—it can be “disruptive of the architecture of sleep,” said Baland Jalal, a researcher who investigates the phenomenon. That could lead to more sleep paralysis.
While not everyone who has sleep paralysis experiences hallucinations(幻觉), seeing a person or a ghost in the room is the most common vision, said Jalal. The mechanisms behind sleep paralysis remain unclear, but research indicates that certain risk factors may increase the likelihood of experiencing a jerk, including extreme exercise before sleep, inadequate sleep, emotional stress and worry, and excessive stimulant consumption (like caffeine and nicotine), especially later in the day.
“For most people, it is not indicative of any kind of disease. If you are really worried about it, regular sleep and other simple relaxation techniques, like meditation, deep breathing and yoga, may help,” said Dr. Nathaniel Watson, president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. While the experience feels frightening, the episodes last only a few seconds or minutes at most. Most people slip out of it as quickly as they fell into it, he said.
32.What is sleep paralysis
A.A frightening dream that interrupts sleep.
B.A physical symptom of anxiety disorders.
C.A mental disease that affects sleep quality.
D.A brief state of being conscious but frozen.
33.What do people who have sleep paralysis often experience
A.Involuntary cough. B.Unreal sensation.
C.Sharpened vision. D.Sustained immobility.
34.What does Dr. Nathaniel Watson say about sleep paralysis
A.It is caused by inadequate sleep. B.It can be a warning signal of diseases.
C.It is a temporary disturbing experience. D.It can be prevented by extreme exercise.
35.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A.Common Myths About Sleep Paralysis
B.Sleep Paralysis: How It Affects Sleep Patterns
C.Ways to Prevent and Cope with Sleep Paralysis

One day my mom and I read a story on a magazine called Humane Society News. A wild dog named Solo died for lack of medical care after he was ill. I knew how sad the story was because my own dog, Kela, had recently died. My world had ended when I lost Kela. She had been my best friend since I could remember. The article continued to tell about wildlife rehabilitators. They nursed the sick animals back to health, but as more and more animals were rescued, the medical expense became a big burden for them. I immediately determined to do something for them. I may be a kid, but why can’t I do a fund-raiser to help save more dogs
My mom thought it was hard for an eleven-year-old girl to raise, but she told me to go ahead and try it anyway. I realized that I needed a name for the fund-raiser and thought since I was trying to protect dogs’ life, I would call my program Help Dogs. I decided that pet stores would be really good places to go with donation boxes and Help Dogs flyers (传单). I used little green Chinese take-out boxes, decorated with a picture of Tiko, one of the dogs I chose to help, and me. I wrote on each box “Help protect the life of dogs by donating a dollar”. I thought my actions might not raise much money for the dogs, but they can at least increase people’s awareness of wild animals protection.
One afternoon, after all the boxes had been distributed throughout our community, I got a call from a local newspaper reporter who had seen one of my flyers. The reporter decided to do an article about Help Dogs. After the article came out, I waited for a few days before checking to see if there were any donations.

I was really nervous when I finally went to collect the money. Would there be anything in the boxes I wondered. I really wasn’t sure that I could raise enough money. But when I collected the first box, I couldn’t believe my eyes. The box was practically overflowing with dollar bills! It totaled over three thousand dollars! I was so excited and totally amazed at the amount of money that I had raised. I couldn’t believe it!
I realized many people feel the same way as I did but didn’t know how to help. Then, just when I had achieved what I thought was my highest goal, I created a Web page to tell other people how to organize a fund-raiser like the one that I did. People from all over the country began to call me to find out how to raise funds to help dogs in their areas. It was a lot of hard work but I learned that if you just keep going, you can accomplish anything.
