【答案】
Suddenly, one of my teammates came up and patted me on the shoulder. He whispered to me, “Don’t be
nervous and don’t be afraid. All of us are here to support you and cheer you up. I’m here to help you.” At this time,
I realised the mistakes I had made before. I shouldn’t be too confident in myself. I should have humbly trained
more with my teammates. At the moment, I was forgiven by my teammates. I pulled myself together, quickly
straightened out my ideas and finished my speech. I saw all my teammates applaud for me and I was moved to tears.

If your motivation is fading and success seems such a long way off, you might need to update your playlist (播
放列表) to include the songs about success and achievement we are featuring in this article.
One Moment in Time, Whitney Houston
“Give me one moment in time, when I’m racing with destiny (命运).” This song makes people highly excited
and motivated and was used as the theme song for the Summer Olympics and Summer Paralympics of 1988. In this
song, Whitney Houston was determined to use the opportunity she had been given to drive herself to the top and
achieve her dreams.
Winning, Santana
“I’m winning. I’m winning. And I don’t intend losing again. It is about overcoming difficulties and achieving
your dreams.” This song is about learning from previous mistakes in order to get better at something and this
improvement is what enables you to win.
Watch Me Rise, Mikky Ekko
“Oh! Higher, higher, higher. We are close enough to touch the sun. Oh! Higher, higher, higher. The journey
has only just begun, begun.” Similar to Santana’s Winning, this song talks about the journey one takes on the way
to success. Life is often filled with struggles and lessons. As you become good at identifying and correcting
mistakes, you will become more knowledgeable and experienced. Eventually, you will reach your goal.
Winner, Pet Shop Boys
“Now we are on our way. Let the ride just take us side by side and make us see the world through new eyes
every day.” We often achieve success with the help of our friends. This song is a reminder for us to enjoy that
moment of success and to appreciate the process of getting there, as well as the people who helped us succeed.
1 How are Winning and Watch Me Rise the same in one aspect
A. They involve being modest in life. B. They involve overcoming shyness.
C. They involve fighting against enemies. D. They involve drawing lessons from faults or errors.
2. Whose song was adopted in a big sports event

When Wilson was 10 years old, he promised his mother that one day she would never again have to wash
other people’s clothes for a living and he was going to start his own business and support her. His mother just
nodded silently, knowing no member of their family had ever owned a business.
Years passed, but Wilson’s dream did not. After high school, Wilson joined the army, where his goal of one
day owning a family restaurant began to take shape. He signed up for the food service school there and he became
such an excellent cook that he was promoted to the officers’ dining hall.
After he left the army at 28, he worked as a police officer for the following fifteen years. When he felt he was
in need of the business skills for his business, he took business classes at night in his off-hours. “I also saved every
cent I earned as a police officer,” he recalled. “For ten years, I didn’t spend one cent — there were no movies, no
vacations, and no trips.”
By 2013, with enough savings, Wilson decided to make his dream a reality. He opened his first restaurant.
However, the first few months were a failure. Wilson quickly change his business strategy and once a week he
offered his employees (雇员) classes in customer service and management. He encouraged them to develop
personal and professional goals. He always stressed that the faster and more efficiently the employees served the
customers, the more profitable that way would be.
Today Wilson owns nine restaurants and employs over four hundred people. In the community, Wilson
funded athletic teams and scholarships (奖学金) to get kids off the streets and into community centers and schools.
Then his restaurants became profitable, earning much more than before. More importantly, Wilson paved the way
for thousands of ordinary young people who are working to make their dreams a reality, helping their communities,
and serving up hope.
4. Why did Wilson want to start his own business at first
A. To become a great cook. B. To help his mother economically.
C. To cheer his mother up. D. To set an example for his family.
5. What did Wilson focus on besides his major work in his 30s
A. Plans for realizing his dream. B. Setting up business schools.
第 4页/共 12页
C. Preparations for enjoying life. D. Working as a police officer.
6. How did Wilson improve his restaurant after it failed
A. By increasing the number of his employees.
B. By cutting down the profits of his restaurant.
C. By offering his workers professional training.
D. By meeting customers’ needs as much as possible.
7. Which of the following can best describe Wilson
A. Easy-going and honest. B. Self-centered and curious.
C. Warm-hearted and wise. D. Strong-willed and helpful.
C
For generations of children, going to the circus (马戏团) has been one of the greatest experiences of their
young lives. Amazing performers and impressive animal shows used to be the standards of what makes a good
circus show. But with the rise of animal rights groups and growing awareness of the bitter lives that circus animals
lead, more countries around the world have passed laws to ban (禁止) the use of animals in recent years. So far, a
total of 26 countries have gone with the times by introducing bans on using animals in shows.
One German circus has found the next reasonable step and introduced a breathtaking holographic (全息影的)
show that combines modern technology with the traditional circus atmosphere. Circus Roncalli, which has been
touring since 1976, banned the use of wild animals in its shows in the 1990s, long before others began to take
similar steps. Since then, Roncalli has used only household horses, but recently decided to stop using any live
animals altogether.
“We decided to stop using animals for their benefit,” said Markus Strobl, the media director of Circus Roncalli,
in a 2017 interview with RP Online. “Most of the performances in the show would already be done by the artists
today. The focus of the Circus Roncalli is on poctic performances. The holographic projections are large enough to
fill the entire circus field, measuring 105 feet wide and 16 feet deep, offering 360° visibility for the entire audience.”
Thanks to modern technology, it’s never been a better time for circuses around the world to end the use of live
animals and embrace the future. Circus Roncalli is undoubtedly a big step ahead of the game. In fact, their use of
3D holograms of animals — such as elephants, horses, and even goldfish-has already attracted hundreds of
thousands of viewers, making it clear that the future of the circus is here.
8. What led to stopping animal shows
A. Absence of wild animals. B. Concerns about the animals.
第 5页/共 12页
C. Disagreements from performers. D. Views on good circus shows.
9. From Markus Strobl’s words, we know that the holographic show _________.
A. presents images from all directions B. focuses on animal performances
C. covers part of the circus field D. replaces actors completely
10. What’s the author’s attitude to the future circus with holographic shows
A. Doubtful. B. Favorable. C. Indifferent. D. Opposed.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. A New Age of Animal Care
B. The Fall of Traditional Circuses
C. The Rise of Live Animal Shows
D. Animal-Free Circuses with Holograms
D
Everyone looks forward to progress, whether in one’s personal life or in the general society. Progress must
lead to a better life and a better way of doing things. All these, however, remain true only in so far as people want
to accept technology and move forward by finding new and more efficient (高效的) ways of doing things.
However, at the back of the minds of many people, especially those who miss the “good old days”, efficiency
comes with a price. When communication becomes more efficient, people are able to contact one another no matter
where they are and at whatever time they wish to. The click of a button allows people miles apart to talk or see each
other without even leaving their homes. With the communication gadgets, such as mobile phones and tablets,
people often do not take the efforts to visit one another personally.
With efficiency also comes mass production. Factories have improved efficiency because many tasks are left
to machines. However, with the improvements in efficiency also comes the loss of the personal touch when making
these products. For example, many handicrafts (手工艺品) are now produced in a factory. Mass production lowers
the quality of the handicraft and it is difficult to find unique designs on each item.
However, progress has allowed tradition to keep up. It is only with progress and the invention of new
technology that many old products can be brought back to their old state. New technology is required for old
products to stay old.
It is people’s attitude towards progress that causes the type of influence that technology has on society.
Technology is flexible. There is no fixed way of making use of it. Everything depends on people’s attitude. When
we accept progress and adapt it to suit our needs, a new “past” is created.
第 6页/共 12页
12. What does the underlined word “gadgets” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Skills. B. Messages. C. Devices. D. Barriers.
13. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The process of mass production.
B. The unique designs of handicrafts.
C. The disadvantages of mass production.
D. The function of technology in mass production.
14. What can be learned about technology from Paragraph 4
A. It can sometimes slow social progress. B. It can destroy old traditions.
C. It can be used to protect old products. D. It can be used to correct mistakes.
15. What can be concluded from the last paragraph
A. Technology can create a new past.
B. Progress can suit the needs of daily life.
C. People review the past with great regret.
D. People’s attitude decides the use of technology.

Some people seem to handle life’s ups and downs without needing much support, encouragement, and
motivation (激励) from others. ____16____ Of course, we all need a little help and guidance sometimes. But these
habits are what independent people do that make them so successful in life.
____17____ Independent people certainly don’t need any help getting up in the morning! They are self-reliant
and know that success means “hanging in there”. They don’t need praise, encouragement, and recognition from
others that they are on the right path. They know they can get the job done, and that excitement is what keeps them
going.
They prioritize (优先考虑) their goals and dreams. ____18____ Some people allow their hopes and dreams to
be just that, and they pay too much attention to the naysayers (摇头族) who tell them it’ll never happen. Self
sufficient people don’t get distracted or discouraged by those who put a downer on their ideas. They know the path
to success may not be easy, and that there may be setbacks along the way, but they believe in what they can achieve.

weaknesses. ____19____ Of course, it’s nice for people to think highly of you, but independent people don’t need

this approval in order to think highly of themselves.

wrong. The only difference is that those who are self-sufficient don’t need any comfort when things don’t go as
planned. ____20____

Pride and Defeat
I had always prided myself on my talent in debates and arguments. Thus, when I was selected to represent the

school in the national debate series, I was naturally confident of my readiness for the task. Little did I know that
this would turn out to be one of the most important lessons in my life.
The run-up to the finals was a breeze for my team. Our teacher was very experienced and we were all good
speakers. My teammates were open to communicate so we showed perfect teamwork. But I was undoubtedly the
most outstanding. In each round, the judges always selected me as the best speaker. This meant that my confidence
was at an all-time high by the time we found ourselves with one week to train before the finals. I had no reason to
even think that I would not be voted the overall best speaker for the debate series.
Unfortunately, I began to get self-focused about the whole business and started putting on airs with my
teammates. I saw myself as the natural debater who would be let down by their bad performance. I became so
dissatisfied that I began missing practices, which disappointed my kind teammates and teacher. They had no choice
but to continue their training schedule.
The day of the finals dawned bright and fine. Actually, I just passed my teammates to enter the hall of the
debate finals, feeling the excitement of being able to finally show off my debating power. But the reality was
something quite different. My absence from the practices had created a gap between my teammates and me. We
could not work perfectly as we did previously. Instead, our teamwork was so bad that even our school supporters
were shamed into silence. When it was my turn to conclude as the last speaker of the team, the hall was quiet.
Everyone knew that I was the most likely to win the overall best speaker for the series.
But as I launched into my speech. I knew that things were very wrong. Due to lack of training, I failed to get
the key point of my speech, for which I wasn’t well prepared. I didn’t know what to say and my mind just went
blank. I was so nervous that I just stood there. I felt all the people present were looking at me with strange eyes. I
was very embarrassed and shed big big sweat.

Suddenly, one of my teammates came up and patted me on the shoulder.
