Shadow puppetry is an ancient form of art in China. It has a long history of more than 2,000 years. People used to call it “the business of the shadow” because the shows are made by the shadows of puppets.
The puppets (木偶) in shadow puppetry are usually made of leather or paper. They are carefully cut and painted to look like people, animals or other things. Artists control the puppets behind a white cloth. When there is light behind the cloth, the shadows of the puppets appear on the cloth. Then the artists make the puppets “act” to tell stories.
The stories in shadow puppetry are very interesting. They can be about history, legends or daily life. People, especially children, love to watch these shows because the puppets seem so lively. In the past, shadow puppetry was one of the most popular forms of entertainment (娱乐). During festivals or special events, people would gather together to watch shadow puppet shows.
However, shadow puppetry is facing some problems today. Fewer and fewer young people are interested in learning this art. Also, with the development of new forms of entertainment like movies and TV shows, shadow puppet shows are not as popular as before. But many artists are trying their best to keep this ancient art alive. They go to schools to teach students about shadow puppetry and put on shows in different places.
