The people of Xinjiang have always needed to be resilient.
Over four-hour flight time from Beijing, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is located on China's western border. Historically, Xinjiang's people have needed to hold steadfast against invaders while encouraging trade between China and central Asia, Europe and beyond. For 25 years until 2016, they also witnessed multiple atrocities perpetrated (暴行) by separatists.
Today their resilience is being tested as never before. They have become collateral damage in a geopolitical struggle in which the United States sees China as a new rival to its hegemonic (霸权) position and its self-proclaimed global leadership. Surrounded by advisors, trained to believe that international relations constitute a battle with only one winner, U. S. leaders cannot imagine that China really believes in collaboration and partnership. They cannot countenance that China is seeking a “win-win” solution in which everyone gains.
The election slogan of “America first” is an unusually accurate depiction of what has been U. S. foreign policy ever since the Declaration of Independence in 1776. In line with this policy goal, the likely intent of any U. S. administration is to contain China's economy.
The battle is being fought through the extraterritorial application of U. S. domestic (国内的) law to impose economic and other sanctions(制裁) on China. It additionally exerts pressure on allies to do likewise, both through diplomatic means and by subjecting them to secondary sanctions. Mainstream and social media are coopted in the cause of public diplomacy to turn global opinion against China through a mix of innuendo, partial truth, untruths and disputed facts.
The multiple unilateral measures taken against China are of three types: trade sanctions, technology sanctions and human rights restrictive measures.
Trade sanctions were initially imposed under the first Trump administration in 2017. Import tariffs and export embargos target specific Chinese economic enterprises and third country nationals that might trade with them.
Sanctions against high-tech companies are underpinned by domestic legislation referring to “national and economic security.” Those sanctioned are typically alleged to have engaged in unspecified malign (污蔑)activities.
24. What has Xinjiang's people experienced in the past 25 years until 2016
A. A long-term trade embargo by foreign countries.
B. Repeated violent acts by separatists.
C. Intense competition in the global market.
D. Severe natural disasters.
25. What can be inferred from the “America first” election slogan
A. The U. S. has always been committed to global cooperation.
B. The U. S. attempts to safeguard world peace and stability.
C. The U. S. prioritizes its own interests in foreign policies.
D. The U. S. aims to promote free trade globally.
26. What is the main purpose of this passage
A. To introduce the geographical location and history of Xinjiang.
B. To analyze the reasons for the U. S.’ s geopolitical struggle against China.
C. To describe the various sanctions imposed by the U. S. on China.
D. To reveal how the people of Xinjiang become victims in the U. S.’ s geopolitical struggle against China.
27. What does the underlined word “countenance” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Accept. B. Deny. C. Doubt. D. Analyze.

‘According to the results of Harvard University's latest international survey, the Chinese public's satisfaction with the CPC exceeds 90 per cent.’ On 12 July, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying tweeted a strong rebuttal to U. S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's slanderous remarks about the CPC, citing a new Harvard University survey report as strong evidence.
The report is Understanding CCP Resilience: A Long-Term Survey of Public Opinion in China, released inJuly 2020 by the Ashe Center for Democratic Governance (民主治理) and Innovation at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government.
The 18-page report was authored by three Kennedy School experts who wrote the survey after conducting eight surveys in China between 2003 and 2016, with face-to-face conversations with more than 31,000 urban and rural Chinese residents to track Chinese citizens' satisfaction with Chinese government at all levels over time. The report concludes that Chinese people's satisfaction with the government has risen almost across the board since2003, especially among those in inland and impoverished areas.
The survey report shows that from 2003 to 2016, the Chinese people's satisfaction with the government at the central, provincial (municipality directly under the central government), city, county and township levels has increased. in 2016, the Chinese people's satisfaction with the central government was as high as 93.1 per cent, and the people's satisfaction with the other three levels of government exceeded 70 per cent, while the satisfaction with the government at the provincial (municipality directly under the central government), city, county and township levels was 81.7 percent, respectively,73.9% and 70.2% respectively. Overall, the higher the level of government, the higher the level of public satisfaction. In addition, in terms of the increase in satisfaction, the township government has seen the most significant increase in public satisfaction, from 43.6% in 2003 to 70.2%.
Concluding the report, the researchers note that by 2016, the Chinese government was more popular than at any time in the past 20 years. On average, the Chinese government provides much better and fairer healthcare, social welfare and other basic public services than it did when the survey began in 2003. Moreover, when it comes to corruption, the decline in satisfaction from 2009 to 2011 has been completely reversed. The public seems to be generally in favour of the anti-corruption campaign. On the environment, even though many residents expressed dissatisfaction, most respondents expect the situation to improve in the coming years.
As Hua Chunying said at the foreign ministry's regular press conference, " The report concludes that the CPC's ruling foundation is solid, and its resilience stems from the broad support of the public. According to this survey report, the Chinese people's satisfaction rate with the Chinese government is higher than at any time in the past few decades, and they generally believe that the Chinese government's ability and efficiency (效率) in governing is greater than at any time in the past, and in fact the Chinese people's satisfaction rate with the central government is over 93 per cent. I think that such a high approval rating(支持率) is probably something that those politicians in the United States are incredibly envious of but can't reach. This in itself is actually the best and most powerful response to the vicious attacks on the Chinese Communist Party by individual politicians such as Pompeo. "
28. What is the theme of the Harvard University survey report
A. The comparison of public services in different countries.
B. The change of the Chinese public's attitude towards environmental protection.
C. Understanding CCP Resilience: A Long - Term Survey of Public Opinion in China.

B. The Chinese government has made remarkable achievements in various fields.
C. The Harvard survey report will be widely recognized by all countries.
D. The Chinese people are more concerned about international affairs.
30. What is the main purpose of this passage
A. To introduce the content and findings of a Harvard University survey report on the Chinese public's satisfaction with the CPC and the government.
B. To show the differences between the Chinese and American political systems.
C. To analyze the reasons for the success of the anti - corruption campaign in China.
D. To respond to the slanderous remarks of U. S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
31. What does the underlined word “rebuttal” in the first paragraph probably mean
A. Support. B. Approval. C. Refutation. D. Analysis.

I live in the land of Disney, Hollywood and year-round sun. You may think people in such a glamorous, fun-filled place are happier than others. If so, you have some mistaken ideas about the nature of happiness.
Many intelligent people still equate happiness with fun. The truth is that fun and happiness have little or nothing in common. Fun is what we experience during an act. Happiness is what we experience after an act. It is a deeper, more abiding emotion.
Going to an amusement park or ball game, watching a movie or television, are fun activities that help us relax, temporarily forget our problems and maybe even laugh. But they do not bring happiness, because their positive effects end when the fun ends.
I have often thought that if Hollywood stars have a role to play, it is to teach us that happiness has nothing to do with fun. These rich, beautiful individuals have constant access to glamorous parties, fancy cars, expensive homes, everything that spells" happiness". But in memoir after memoir, celebrities reveal the unhappiness hidden beneath all their fun: depression, alcoholism, drug addiction, broken marriages, troubled children and profound loneliness.
Ask a bachelor why he resists marriage even though he finds dating to be less and less satisfying. If he's honest, he will tell you that he is afraid of making a commitment. For commitment is in fact quite painful. The single life is filled with fun, adventure and excitement. Marriage has such moments, but they are not its most distinguishing features.
Similarly, couples that choose not to have children are deciding in favor of painless fun over painful happiness. They can dine out ever they want and sleep as late as they want. Couples with infant children are lucky to get a whole night's sleep or a three-day vacation. I don't know any parent who would choose the word fun to describe raising children.
Understanding and accepting that true happiness has nothing to do with fun is one of the most liberating realizations we can ever come to. It liberates time: now we can devote more hours to activities that can genuinely increase our happiness. It liberates money: buying that new car or those fancy clothes that will do nothing to increase our happiness now seems pointless. And it liberates us from envy: we now understand that all those rich and glamorous people we were so sure are happy because they are always having so much fun actually may not be happy at all.
32. Which of the following is true
A. Fun creates long-lasting satisfaction.
B. Fun provides enjoyment while pain leads to happiness.
C. Happiness is enduring whereas fun is short-lived.
D. Fun that is long-standing may lead to happiness.
33. To the author, Hollywood stars all have an important role to play that is to .
A. write memoir after memoir about their happiness
B. tell the public that happiness has nothing to do with fun
C. teach people how to enjoy their lives
D. bring happiness to the public instead of going to glamorous parties
34. Having infant children .
A. are lucky since they can have a whole night's sleep
B. find fun in tucking them into bed at night
C. find more time to play and joke with them
D. derive happiness from their endeavor
35. If one gets the meaning of the true sense of happiness, he will .
A. stop playing games and joking with others
B. make the best use of his time increasing happiness
C. give a free hand to money
D. keep himself with his family

While growing up, your parents probably told you to dress warmly when going outside, or else you'll catch a cold. Now, a cold-water immersion(浸没) movement suggests that exposure to the cold actually does the opposite.36.
Led by a man named Wim Hof, known by some as the Ice Man, cold water immersion is gaining popularity. You may recognize his name from the documentary The Superhuman World of Wim Hof: The Iceman. Hof's documentary retells how he found himself tragically alone with four children after his wife died in 1995.
37. One morning, while overlooking a cold stream in the Netherlands, he had the urge to jump in.
Feeling the intensity of that cold, Hof grew the strength to push past physical and mental limitations. He continued his practice of cold immersion alongside meditation(冥想) and breathing techniques. 38. It was through this practice that he discovered the physical and mental health benefits of this combination of breathwork, meditation and cold immersion.
39. According to a cold-water research in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, cold water can have physiological effects including an. increased heart rate, faster breathing rate and higher blood pressure. And, a study of 3,108 people, published in the journal PLoS One, found that people who take cold showers are 29 percent less likely to call in sick. The researchers concluded that cold showers could make the illnesses less severe.
So if you want to obtain the benefits of cold-water immersions, you don't have to start by jumping into an ice bath. Hof's programs often begin with short breathing exercises followed by a 30-second cold shower.

Traditional Chinese Medicine: A Treasure of China Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), with 56 history spanning thousands of years, has been an integral part of Chinese culture and healthcare system. Rooted in ancient Chinese philosophy, TCM views the human body 57 a harmonious whole, where mind and body, as well as the body and nature, are interconnected. One of the most distinct features of TCM is its diagnostic method. TCM practitioners rely on four main techniques: inspection, auscultation - olfaction, interrogation, and palpation. By carefully 58 (observe) a patient's complexion, tongue appearance, listening to their voice, asking about their symptoms and medical history, and feeling the pulse, they can accurately identify the root cause of an illness. For example, a pale tongue might indicate a deficiency of qi and blood, while a rapid pulse could suggest the presence of heat in the body. Another key aspect of TCM is its vast material medica. 59 (compose) of a wide variety of natural substances, including herbs, minerals, and animal parts (although the use of endangered species is now strictly regulated), TCM remedies have demonstrated remarkable effectiveness in treating a range of ailments. Take ginseng, for instance. Renowned for its ability to boost energy, improve cognitive function, and strengthen the immune system, ginseng (人参) has been used in TCM for centuries. Many herbs are often combined in complex formulas to enhance (增强) their therapeutic 60 (effort) . In addition to herbal medicine, TCM also encompasses other healing modalities such as acupuncture and moxibustion. Acupuncture involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body to stimulate (刺激) the flow of qi(vital energy).Moxibustion, on the other hand, 61 (used) burning mugwort (艾叶) near the skin to warm the body and promote the circulation of qi and blood. These techniques have been shown to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and help with various chronic conditions. Despite its long-standing history, TCM has 62 (facing) challenges in the modern era. Some Western medical practitioners have been skeptical about its scientific basis. 63 ,with the increasing interest in complementary and alternative medicine globally, TCM is gradually gaining recognition. In fact, many Western countries have started to incorporate(混合) TCM into their healthcare systems. Research is also being conducted to better understand the mechanisms behind TCM therapies, and more and more scientific evidence 64 emerging to support its effectiveness. As a precious heritage of China, TCM not only provides effective healthcare solutions but also reflects the profound 65 (wise) of the Chinese people. It is hoped that TCM will continue to thrive, bringing benefits to people around the world.

" Why she let out my secret Why she did that to me " I vividly remembered that day when I was confused at the knowing looks everyone gave me. That terrible experience was impressed on my mind. I couldn't forgive the person with whom I had shared my secret. She lost all my trust and friendship.
Five years back, Sally was a new addition in my class. I didn't know what but there was something sticky about her that attracted me towards her. She was the most friendly person I knew. We started as classmates but after a few months, we were like best friends. We did homework together and dreamed of going to the same university one day. We hung out and went to the movies on weekends. That was a sweet time.
Nevertheless, I couldn't expect such an enormous betrayal (背叛) from her. I didn't know what made me tell Sally about my personal life. I felt much regret to myself. She exaggerated(夸大) the matter, added her own spices to it and made it the hottest topic in school. It was like someone had stabbed (戮)a knife in my back. After she let out my secret, everyone at school started laughing at me and gazing at me wherever I passed. I was like a pond in which someone had thrown a stone and it had been spilled up. It was the most embarrassing time I had gone through. Soon afterwards. I left school and shifted to another one because I thought no one had the right to laugh at me. Sally called me many times, but I didn't answer. My heart was broken because the person whom I trusted most cheated me.
I made efforts to remove the scar from my heart. I started a new life, leaving all the bad memories behind because they made me a person who often thought about the past experiences. Five years later, with the life going on, I met new friends and seldom thought about the past.
