Lee and Jim were good friends. One day, they were going through a desert.
On the way, they had an argument. And Lee hit Jim. Jim felt hurt. He said nothing but wrote in the sand, “Today, my best friend hit me.”
They kept on walking and got to a small lake. They decided to take a bath. They jumped into the lake. But all of a sudden, Jim couldn’t move. Something caught him in the water. He had trouble breathing. He cried, ‘‘Help!” Luckily, Lee heard him in time and saved him. Jim wrote on a flat stone, ‘‘Today, my best friend saved my life.’’
Lee asked him, ‘‘You wrote in the sand then and you write on a stone now. Why ”
“When someone does something hurtful, we should write it down in the sand. The wind can blow it away. When someone does something good for us, we should write it down on a stone. No wind can erase it.”

Language points
1. Past Simple Tense (一般过去时)
The story uses the past simple tense to describe completed actions in the past.
Examples from the text:
They were good friends. (be → was/were)
They had an argument. (have → had)
Lee hit Jim. (hit → hit, irregular verb)
Jim wrote in the sand. (write → wrote)
2. Transition Words (过渡词)
The story uses transition words to show the order of events.

3. Direct Speech (直接引语)
The story uses quotation marks (“ ”) to show what the characters said.

4. Contrast with "but" (用but表示转折)
The word "but" is used to show a contrast between two ideas.
Examples from the text:
Jim felt hurt, but he said nothing.
Lee hit Jim, but later he saved him.
Additional Examples:
It was raining, but we still played outside.
She was tired, but she finished her homework.
5. Metaphor (比喻)
Jim compares writing in sand (forgetting bad things) and writing on stone (remembering good things).
Examples from the text:
"The wind can blow it away." (bad things should be forgotten)
"No wind can erase it." (good things should be remembered)

"Time is money." (Time is valuable like money.)

e.g. Keep on learning as long as you live.活到老,学到老。
【拓展】 keep的其他常见用法:
keep sb. doing sth.让某人一直做某事
keep sb. from doing sth.阻止某人做某事
keep sb./sth.+adj.使某人/某物保持……状态
e.g. The ups and downs of the story will keep you laughing from beginning to end.故事的跌宕起伏会让你从头笑到尾。
He had trouble breathing. 他呼吸困难。
“have trouble doing sth.做某事有困难”,相当于have problems/difficulty doing sth.。trouble 在此作名词,意为“麻烦;问题”,其前可用 some、no、much 等词修饰。
e.g. More than 70 million people around the world have trouble getting clean, safe water.世界上有超过七千万人难以获得干净、安全的水。
in time 及时 指恰好赶上,暗含匆忙之义。
on time 按时,准时 指依照规定或约定的时间。
Luckily, Lee heard him in time and saved him.

When someone does something hurtful, we should write it down in the sand.
当有人做了伤人的事,我们应该把它写在沙子上。
