He also cleans his own room once a week. What a chore that is! Sometimes he even has to look after his little sister and brother. Sam has a foreign friend at school. His name is Kumar. Doing chores in Kumar’s family is very different. In the house only the girls do chores. His sisters make all the beds and clean all the rooms too, even his bedroom. His mother always cooks the meals, and his sisters help her to go shopping, and prepare the food. They work hard at home, doing all the chores with their mother. Doing Housework Makes Me Happy
Last weekend, I got up early and cooked noodles for my parents. First, I boiled some water. Then I put some noodles into the pot. About five or six minutes later, I placed them in the bowls and added some salt and oil. When my parents got up, they were surprised and praised me with a big smile.
It was the time for me to cook for them, a little bit but happy. I felt proud of myself because I could take care of my parents. From this unforgettable experience, I’ve also got a deeper understanding of my parents.

Choose the best answer according to the short passage.
Do teenagers in small villages do chores at home How about the teenagers in big cities Here is a survey. We asked 4,000 teenagers in China several questions. Half of them come from big cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. The others are from small villages. We made a diagram of the result of our survey. Let’s have a look at it. We found out that teenagers from small villages do more chores than those from big cities. Maybe it is because they live a harder life. Our advice to parents in big cities is that parents should give their children some chores to do. Doing chores teaches teenagers to take care of themselves.

Special Friendship
Last year, I learned from a newspaper that some sick kids needed help. I phoned the newspaper and I was asked to help a little girl named Lisa, who had mental (心理的) illness.
A short time later, I went for a visit to Lisa. After having been at the mental hospital for years, she had recently been allowed to be at home. In the beginning, I did most of the talking. Lisa, however, was too quiet and introverted (内向的), shyly sitting in the corner of the sofa and listening. She was careful not to allow (允许) our eyes to meet. Over time, Lisa felt more comfortable little by little while I was present. Our weekly get-togethers usually meant sharing a cup of hot coffee, window shopping or taking slow walks in the country.
Lisa never discussed how she felt about our friendship, even after we completed our first year together. However, she knew she could always depend on (依赖) me.
Then one day I got a call from our volunteer group. “Mary, would you and Lisa like to be interviewed on a local TV news show ” Excited, I answered, “Wow! Let me discuss it with Lisa.” I didn’t think Lisa would be comfortable going on “live” television. But to my surprise, Lisa wanted to be interviewed, too.
At the interview, she said, “If I can help other people understand how important our friendship is, and how it has helped me, maybe they’ll volunteer, too. Mary, wouldn’t that be great ” With tears running down, we smiled at one another.
From then on, Lisa never missed a chance to plant seeds (种子) about the volunteer group with others. Her face lit up whenever she talked about our special friendship.

For years I have wanted a flower garden. I’d spend hours thinking of different things I could plant that would look nice together.
But then we had Matthew, and Marvin, and the twins, Alisa and Alan, and then Helen. I was too busy raising them to grow a garden.
Money was tight, as well as time. Often when my children were little, one of them would want something that cost too much, and I’d have to say, “Do you see a money tree in the yard Money doesn’t grow on trees, you know.”
Finally, they all finished high school and college and were off on their own. I started thinking again about having a garden.
Then one spring morning on Mother’s Day, I was working in my kitchen. Suddenly I saw a new tree out of the window. Then I put my glasses on and I couldn’t believe my eyes. There was a money tree in my yard.
I went to have a look. It was true. There were dollar bills taped all over the tree. There was also a note among them, “Thank you for your time, Mum. We love you.”
Later my children bought me tools and gardening books.
That was three years ago. My garden’s now very pretty, just like I wanted. When I go out and take care of my flowers, I don’t seem to miss my children as much as I once did. It feels like they are right there with me.
I live in a city where winters are long and cold, and summers are too short. But every year when the winter comes, I look out of my window and think of the flowers. I’ll see next spring in my little garden. I think about what my children did for me, and get tears in my eyes.
I’m still not sure that money grows on trees. But I know love does.

Maintain mental health
During a crisis like the novel coronavirus outbreak, healthy people may suffer even if they aren’t actually infected by the virus. This is because the uncertainty of a crisis can be scary and stressful.
These types of situations can have a negative effect on your overall mental health. This stress can come from things like the fear of becoming infected or worrying about loved ones.
People may also feel stressed for being stuck inside for a long period of time. For example, you may have been feeling emotions like boredom, loneliness or anger if you have been staying at home under quarantine.
“For a lot of people, a day or two in isolation may be OK, but weeks without getting out of the house – the stress will certainly build up,” Paul Yin, a psychologist who has experience with crisis counseling, told NBC News.
If you find yourself in this situation, you may be thinking, “Is what I’m feeling normal ” or “What can I do to deal with all of this ” Even if you aren’t in an infected area, it’s natural to experience these emotions.
Let’s look at some healthy ways for you to manage some of these negative feelings.
Do what you can to stay informed about the virus. Rumors and speculation can feed feelings of anxiety, so be sure to get your information from trusted sources like the government.
Follow basic hygiene practices. This includes things like washing your hands often and in the right way, using tissues when you sneeze or cough, and staying at home if you aren’t feeling well.
Have a daily routine. Eat a healthy and balanced diet and do some exercise every day. You can also use this time to explore new hobbies and keep busy.
Stay connected. During stressful times, it can feel like you’re alone. But you aren’t! You can talk to friends and family about your feelings.
“The key is to take good care of the body, arrange a reasonable schedule, ensure adequate sleep and diet, and get the necessary rest and relaxation,” Zhang Hong, deputy chief physician of Wuhan Mental Health Center, said. After all, your mental health is just as important as your physical health.

As someone who’s had a lot of practice in keeping a long-distance (远距离的) friendship, I thought I’d like to share some tips with you. 51
Talking to your friends often keeps the friendship going! It’s a lot easier to pretend (假装) your best friend is there with you if you share the same information you would share in person. Sometimes friendship is about knowing that someone is on the other line. 52
Here’s the deal: Life happens. While you probably won’t be able to be there for your friend as much as you used to, it is worth (值得) it to lose an hour of sleep when they need help. 53
People need space, and that’s fine. If the friendship is strong enough, going a little while without talking won’t hurt. 54
This is a fun one and a must. It’s always the thought that counts. The gift doesn’t have to be very expensive, but it will let your friends know you are thinking about them. 55
Realize that people change and that your friends won’t stay the same no matter how much you want them to. Though your friend might start to seem more and more like a different person. Don’t feel bad about it. You’re changing too.
A.Space is also OK.
B.Look for a new friend.
C.Have a video talk.
D.Gifts are necessary.
E.Be ready for growth.
F.Be there for them.
