Rico is a dog who lives in Germany. His owners trained him from a young age to find his toys. When they say the name of a certain toy, Rico can find it. In fact, he seems to know the names of 200 toys!
Some researchers in Germany wanted to test Rico. They put his toys in a room and then told him to go into the room and find a certain toy. Since nobody was in the room with Rico, he had no help from anyone finding the right toy. The researchers did this test forty times. Rico found the right toy thirty-seven times.
Then the researchers tried something else. They put seven of Rico’s toys in the room and one new toy that Rico had never seen before. Then they told Rico to go into the room and get the new toy. This new toy had a name Rico had never heard before. Rico found the right toy seven out of ten times!
Researchers cannot really say that Rico knows words or language. However, these tests seem to show that Rico can think about what he hears and think about what he knows. In fact, Rico seems to think and remember things as well as a three-year-old child.

Rainforest doctors, called shamans, use many kinds of plants as medicine. They make tea from one type of red vine (藤蔓). This tea cures stomachaches. Yellow flowers from another plant are used to treat snakebite.
Learning from the Shamans
Today, scientists from all over the world want to learn what these shamans know about plant medicines. They are studying the rainforest before the plants disappear. However, the rainforests are disappearing fast. Sometimes they want to use the land for farming. Sometimes they cut down the trees and sell the wood.
Now the scientists travel by boat, air, and on foot to rainforest villages. Then they spend long hours making their way through the hot and humid jungle (丛林) with the local shamans. The shamans show the scientists which plants can be used as medicines.
One USA company has already found an important new medicine. It comes from a plant in the rainforest. This medicine may soon be used to cure lung infections in kids. Rainforest plants might cure many bad illnesses. So medicine companies are working to save the rainforest. ② Is it good for them to sleep with a pet Scientists have traditionally (传统上) said no because they thought people might not get a good sleep. Animals may move, make a noise and have an influence on people. Therefore, people may wake up easily and have problems sleeping well. “Animals may get up, walk on the bed and step on people. A study in 2017 by the Mayo Clinic’s Center for Sleep Medicine in Phoenix found over half of pet owners allowed their pets to sleep in the bedroom and most of them found their pets might be even helpful to their sleep. Another 2021 study showed that sleeping with pets might be good for children as well. Some children thought they would have a sense of safety when sleeping with their pets.
⑤ “People with depression (抑郁症) or anxiety may get a lot from having their pets on their bed because the pet can be like a big pillow, a big blanket and they may feel that the warm, soft and cute animal can help them relax,” said a sleep specialist.
⑥ All in all, many of us still need to think twice about bringing our dogs, cats or pigs into our bedrooms. It is especially bad for people with insomnia (失眠) or patients with other sleep problems. People can make a decision depending on their own conditions.

Some researchers in Germany wanted to test Rico. They put his toys in a room and then told him to go into the room and find a certain toy. Since nobody was in the room with Rico, he had no help from anyone finding the right toy. The researchers did this test forty times. Rico found the right toy thirty-seven times.

Researchers cannot really say that Rico knows words or language. However, these tests seem to show that Rico can think about what he hears and think about what he knows. In fact, Rico seems to think and remember things as well as a three-year-old child.

A young boy is crying because his ear hurts. Then a man comes out of the forest. He carries some juice from a white fungus (蘑菇). Carefully, he puts the juice into the boy’s ear. In some rainforest villages of South America, that’s how earaches are treated!
