The new school year is just beginning. Along with it comes a mix of excitement and nervousness. There is a wealth of new knowledge to learn over the term. Whether you succeed or not will depend on how hard you work. But, more importantly, it will depend on your thirst for knowledge—your desire to learn.
Learning shouldn’t be seen as a chore (苦差事), it should be seen as a privilege (荣幸). My grandfather never had the privilege of a good education. He grew up in a small village in rural Canada. There was a one-room schoolhouse where children were taught the basics of reading, writing and arithmetic. My grandfather, like most of the kids, left school after the sixth grade to work on the family farm. But, unlike many others, my grandfather had a thirst for knowledge. He read every book he could get his hands on. One day, he came across a biography of Humphrey Davy, the famous English chemist.
Davy’s experiments with chemicals inspired my grandfather to learn more about them and how they could combine to form other chemicals. For a few dollars, he signed up for a correspondence course. Lessons were sent to him by mail. After years of study, he received a diploma in chemistry and was able to leave the farm and find work in the laboratory of a large company.
My father inherited this thirst for knowledge, but like my grandfather, he, too, had to cut short his education. There were seven children in the family and not enough money to educate them all, so my father left school at the age of sixteen and went to work. But that didn’t stop him from learning. He loved to read. After a long day at work, he would always pick up a book and start reading. It was his influence that has inspired me to read, learn and discover new things. When he retired, my father returned to school to complete his high school diploma. His thirst for knowledge never ended.
If there’s one piece of advice that I can give you as you begin a new school year, it’s this—always “thirst”—for a “pool” of knowledge!

Clyde, a small-clawed otter (水獭), was moved from Auckland Zoo to Wellington Zoo two months ago. The zookeepers hoped he and the other otter Bonnie might start a family together.
But only two days after he arrived, Clyde went missing. He had dug his way under one of the walls and was nowhere to be seen.
The zookeepers set up cages inside the zoo, with plate of Clyde’s favorite fish in them, hoping to catch him.
Two days went by and still there was no sign of Clyde’s.
At last a couple saw Clyde at their house—a whole kilometer away in Newtown. Clyde was hiding in an out-of-reach hole outside their laundry.
The zookeeper arrived and set up some more traps to try to catch him. But Clyde is a pretty smart otter. Twice he managed to get the fish out of a trap without being caught.
Five days after he’s escaped, Clyde’s days on the run came to an end when he was finally caught in one of the traps.
It was no good putting Clyde back in his old home—he’d only dig his way out again. So he and Bonnie were put into the zoo hospital. There was no chance of their escaping from there.
Meanwhile, the zookeepers were working hard to make Clyde’s old home safer. They put an iron barrier underground to stop him digging their way out. Then Bonnie and Clyde went home again.
But a month after his first escape, Clyde was out again. Once more the zookeepers came hurrying to catch Clyde. They found him by following the bubbles he made in the river nearby.
Nobody knew how Clyde had escaped. But this time he was only out for an hour. So, he went back to the hospital again.

The mystery stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle are famous all over the world.
The detective in his stories is called Sherlock Holmes. He solves mysteries in a most surprising way. His assistant, Dr Watson, watches with admiration and then writes up the story of the mystery afterwards.
This is a useful story writing skill. Because Watson is not very clever, the story remains a mystery until the end. The readers can sometimes pick up some clues before he does! Then, to make Watson understand the mystery, Holmes has to explain it all, step by step. So we, the readers, get to see it step by step too. Watson is almost as good a character in the story as Sherlock Holmes!
The very first time they meet, Holmes greatly surprises Watson. When they are first introduced, Holmes says to Watson, “How do you do I see you have been to Afghanistan (阿富汗).”
Watson is too amazed by this to ask Holmes how he knows this. Watson has, indeed, been to Afghanistan. Later, he asks Holmes about it. Holmes explains that there is nothing magical about what he does. He gets to know it all by very, very careful observation (观察).
Observation One
Watson was introduced to Holmes as a doctor. Yet Holmes thought that the way he stood and walked made him seem like a soldier. So, this meant he was probably an army doctor.
Observation Two
Watson’s face was quite dark skinned. But his wrists were pale. So his dark face was probably sun burnt. This meant that he had been to a hot, sunny country.
Observation Three
At the time, the British army had soldiers at bases in many parts of the world. So there were still a lot of places to choose from. However, Holmes saw that Watson looked very tired and he was always holding his left arm, as if it was painful. So, he had probably been with the army to a place where they were fighting. There was only one place where the British army was fighting at that time: Afghanistan.

Choose the best answer. (根据短文内容,选择最恰当的答案)
When I was younger, bedtime was always my favourite part of the day. Wearing soft pajamas(睡衣裤) and with Lan, my stuffed monkey, in my arms, I felt no pressure at all.
I named Lan after my uncle when I compared Lan’s long arms and legs to his. One night I ran up to Uncle Lan at a family party and told him I had named my monkey after him. His eyebrows wrinkled in confusion, then a chuckle(哈哈大笑) escaped his lips. I guess he didn’t understand how important it was to me.
Even if Uncle Lan didn’t think my monkey was special, I certainly did. I dressed him in a white baby nightgown. My mother thought that Lan was the best-dressed stuffed animal in the world. Yes, he was certainly a fashionable creature. The strong cologne(科隆香水) I used on him years ago makes him still smell “pretty”.
For a long time, Lan went everywhere with me. He was my best friend, and I told him everything. But when I turned twelve, I realized I was too old for stuffed animals. I thought people would think I was babyish, so I put him in the cupboard with the rest of my teddy bears and dolls. I begged him to understand why I was doing this, but at the same time I longed to talk to him again.
It took me several years to realize that it was OK to miss Lan. I know now that maturity doesn’t only mean growing up and taking on more responsibility. It also means holding on to your childhood and acting young sometimes.
Lan has been with me since I was six years old. Holding him in my arms connects me to my past and my present as I continue to grow and understand myself.

Choose the best answer(选择最恰当的答案)
When my son, Mark, was in the third grade, he saved all his pocket money for over three months to buy holiday presents for those he loved. The third Saturday in December Mark said that he had made his list and had twenty dollars in his pocket.
I drove him to nearby supermarket. Mark picked up a hand basket and went off on his own while I waited patiently reading a book in the car. It took Mark over 45 minutes to choose his presents. The clerk rang in his purchases(把他所购物品输入现金出入记录器)as I politely looked the other way. Mark kept within his budget(预算)and reached into his pocket for his money. It was not there! There was a hole in his pocket, but no money. Mark stood in the middle of the store holding his basket, tears rolling down his cheeks. His whole body was shaking with his sobs. Then an amazing thing happened. A customer in the store came up to Mark. She knelt down and took him in her arms.
“You would do me the greatest favour if you let me replace(补还)your money,” said the woman. “It would be the most wonderful present you could ever give me. I only ask that one day you pass it on. One day, when you are grown-up, I would like you to find someone you can help. When you help this other person, I know you will feel as good about it as I do now.”
Mark took the money, dried his tears and ran to the checkout counter as fast as he could. I think we all enjoyed our gifts that year as much as Mark enjoyed giving them to us.
I would like to say “thank you” to that very kind woman. I would like to tell her that four years later Mark went house to house collecting blankets and clothes for the homeless people in the Oakland fire—and he thought of her. And I want to promise her that Mark will never forget to keep passing it on.

B.Because he didn’t keep within his budget.
C.Because his money was missing.
D.Because there was a hole in his pocket.
76.What does the underlined word “sobs” mean
A.抽泣 B.怒骂 C.拳打脚踢 D.点头
77.What did the woman want to do She wanted to _________.
