(2024·江苏南通·中考真题)My friend Julie and I are keen on creating a beautiful green town.
Gardening Course
Every September, our city has a special festival. Crowds of happy people go to the park, waving ribbons in their hands. That’s because the gardening competition takes place there.
For Julie and me, it was a pity that we couldn’t take part in the competition, for that was also the first day of our high school. We buried ourselves in choosing courses. We wanted to learn all about plants, gardening and farming. Finally, a course called Agriculture and Wildlife came into our sight. We thought it would help us succeed as gardeners.
Project presentation
After a year’s study, Julie advised me to give a presentation. There was a small plastic model of my idea on the table. On the other side of the table, my teachers were waiting to see my project—the green farm.
“Good morning!” I said “During my studies I’ve learned a lot about city farming. Now. I want to do something with what I’ve learned.”
I showed them the model. “This is the high street of our town. This is an old, nine-floor car park. No one has used it for the last two years and it’s now for sale.”
I continued the presentation. They could see my designs on the big screen when I talked.
“I’ve designed a city farm using the car park building. There will be eight floors to farm fruit and vegetables. This design can help us collect rainwater to wet the soil. And we can also use energy from the sun to power the special growing lights. “
“I will hire the space out to local people and they will sell everything good enough for the environment in local shops. Also, the ninth floor will be for those who want to grow their own plants.”
My audience looked interested and my project got the highest marks in my class. But in the real world. it couldn’t happen because the car park was not available.

Later, Julie helped me search the town for the perfect place for gardening, not in front of the Town Hall or the shopping centre. We tried to look for something different. Somewhere that was not the best neighbourhood, but a poor one. One where the road was full of holes and the pavement (人行道) was all broken. At last, we made it.
In the neighbourbood, we posted letters through people’s doors with gardening instructions. More and more people cared about that and began to plant vegetable gardens.
Then in the same neighbourhood, we put grass over those broken old pavements for the kids to play on. Finally, we put up a sign that said, “Have fun here.”
When we finished, we were both covered in soil and completely exhausted. But Julie put an arm around my shoulders and smiled. “Not bad!” she said. “We can do more to make our town greener!”.

We have known that no two fingerprints are exactly the same for hundreds of years. However, it wasn’t until 1910 that the first criminal in the USA was convicted (被判有罪) using fingerprint evidence.
Early on the morning of September 19, 1910, Hiller’s wife noticed that the light which they usually left on was off. When Hiller went to find out what was happening, he saw a stranger at the top of the stairs. The stranger had broken in and wanted to steal. Hiller’s wife ran to Hiller when she heard the gunshots but found him dead. So she called the police. Soon after, the police caught Thomas Jennings, not far from the Hillers’ house.

(2024·江苏镇江·中考真题)I have lived in China for six years, but still think the country is mysterious. So I made up my mind to go on a 3-month cycling journey to discover more.
My cycling journey was very safe in China because I never had a moment in which I felt I was in danger. Wherever I went, there was always phone signal, and even WeChat pay.
The beauty of nature was also fantastic. It simply took my breath away when I cycled on the way. With thick forests, blue lakes and green hills, there was so much to see.
The food was another highlight of my journey. I got to taste local food in every place I went. My favourite was the spicy food in Sichuan. No matter how much I ate, I never got sick of having different Chinese foods. There were so many different choices.
In addition, cycling in China cost less than I thought. I could even save some money during the trip to support a local charity.
The best part was about people. I met people from different ethnic minorities (少数民族) across China and I was even invited to attend a wedding by Tibetan girls. The wedding was amazing, full of dancing, laughter and fun. One time I me t a group of Chinese men who were also travelling, but by motorcycle. They invited me to stay with them in the mountains. We cooked fish that we caught from the lake together. It felt like true freedom from the busy feeling of daily life. Another example was impressive. When I met a group of cyclists in their 60s, they cycled better than me. It really encouraged me to push myself and go farther every day. Also, an experienced cyclist saved me when I got a flat tire (爆胎). He helped fix my tire.

“I can’t take him into the house,” he thinks. “My mum doesn’t like animals in the house!”

After that, he goes back to his room. Unluckily, his parents are waiting for him. Finding his T-shirt missing, they get quite angry and don’t allow him to go out within a week. Jack goes to his room without any words, but he can’t fall asleep because he is worrying about Falco.

Finally, Jack has no choice but to tell his brother the truth. Jim becomes very excited.
“Jim, please don’t say anything to Mum and Dad. I can repair your rocket.”
“My rocket isn’t important, Jack. But Falco is!”
Then the brothers discuss how to feed Falco. They decide to get help from their friend Holly because she knows a lot about animals, birds and nature. Later, the brothers go to Holly. Holly advises them to feed some meat to Falco.
Over the next few days, Falco gets much better. He always eats the meat Jack and Jim bring him from the kitchen. Jack even digs up worms in the park for Falco. Falco loves them! His feathers look bright and shiny, too. But he still can’t fly.
One morning, Holly comes to see Falco. After watching it for a while, Holly says, “Falco is well enough to fly again!” Hearing this, they happily open the door, and watch Falco step into the sunlight slowly. Falco beats his wings and tries to fly in small circles, then in large ones. Suddenly, he makes a loud cry and flies away. Jack feels a bit sad, but he knows they are right.

(2024·江苏盐城·中考真题)It was half past seven on Monday morning: time to get ready for school. Jay Stone rolled out of bed. He did a couple of quick wake-up exercises and then he went over to his mirror (镜子) and looked at himself.
“Not bad, Stone, not bad,” he said to himself and smiled. Maybe he wasn’t ready for Hollywood, but with his dark brown eyes and his thick brown hair, he had the looks that turned girls’ heads. He moved closer to the mirror and smiled, checking his teeth.
“Perfect,” he thought. “Good enough for a toothpaste ad.”
As his eyes moved down to his strong arms, he smiled again. The hours he spent in the gym and doing sit-ups have paid off.
But suddenly, the smile froze. His eyes moved from the upper part of his body down to his legs. His legs were short. Not just short, but far too short for his body. Even at basketball, where the other players were much taller than him, they were still afraid of him because of his speed.

(2025·江苏宿迁·二模)The Marionette (木偶) started to grumble and cry that he wanted a new pair of feet.
But Mastro Geppetto, in order to punish him for his mischief (淘气), let him alone the whole morning. After dinner, he said to him: “Why should I make your feet over again To see you run away from home once more ”
“I promise you,” answered the Marionette, sobbing, “that from now on I’ll be good...”
“Boys always promise that when they want something,” said Geppetto.
“But I am not like other boys! I am better than all of them and I always tell the truth. I promise you, Father, that I’ll learn a trade, and I’ll be the comfort and staff of your old age.”
Geppetto, though trying to look very stern, felt his eyes fill with tears and his heart soften when he saw Pinocchio so unhappy. He said no more, but taking his tools and two pieces of wood, he started to work hard.
In less than an hour the feet were finished, two slender (纤细的), nimble (灵活的) little feet, modeled as if by an artist’s hands.
As soon as the Marionette felt his new feet, he gave one leap from the table and started to skip and jump around, as if he had lost his head from very joy.
“To show you how grateful I am to you, Father, I’ll go to school now. But to go to school I need a suit of clothes.”
Geppetto did not have a penny in his pocket, so he made his son a little suit of flowered paper, a pair of shoes from the bark of a tree, and a tiny cap from a bit of dough.
Pinocchio (匹诺曹) ran to look at himself in a bowl of water, and he felt so happy that he said proudly: “Now I look like a gentleman.”
“Truly,” answered Geppetto. “But remember that fine clothes do not make the man unless they be neat and clean.”
“Very true,” answered Pinocchio, “but, in order to go to school, I still need something very important.”
“What is it ”
“An A-B-C book.”
Putting on his old coat, full of darns and patches (补丁), he ran out of the house without another word. After a while, he returned. In his hands, he had the A-B-C book for his son, but the old coat was gone. The poor fellow was in his shirt sleeves and the day was cold.
“Where’s your coat, Father ”
“I have sold it.”
“Why did you sell it ”
“It’s too warm.”

(2025·江苏无锡·一模)Olivia, Emma, and Connor were excited about the first meeting of the Inquiry (探究) Club that year. The Club was a group of students looking for answers to their questions. They met every Friday after school.
Last year, they discovered rubbish on the grass in front of the school. They asked many questions and learned that the wind blew it there from cans across the street. They made sure the rubbish got picked up and that it didn’t happen again.
Mr. Armstrong was the club’s advisor. He reviewed and passed their projects and helped guide them in their inquiries. “What ideas do you have for a big project this fall ” he asked.
“I have an idea,” Emma said. “At home, I eat really healthy food with my family. Here at school, there aren’t many healthy foods for lunch.”
“I think some students here don’t even know what healthy foods are,” Olivia said. She frowned.
“We could ask them what kinds of foods they eat at home,” Connor said, “and then we can compare that list against what the school cafeteria serves.”
“Great idea,” Mr. Armstrong said. “See what you can find out and report back to me on Friday.”
The club decided that each member would work on a different part of the project.
“I’ll do the first part,” Connor said. “I’ll come up with the questions we want to ask about healthy foods. Then I can ask the questions in each class.”
The girls agreed. “When you’re done, I can collect and organize the results,” Olivia said.
“Then I can write the report,” Emma said.
Connor went off to the library to work on the list of questions. It was harder than he thought. He sat for a long time just trying to come up with the questions. He thought about what they wanted to learn from the other students.
He decided to keep the questions simple. They wanted to know which foods the students ate at home compared to school. To make it easy, he came up with a list of healthy foods and a list of unhealthy foods. The students could choose what they ate from the lists. He also decided to keep track of how old each student was, in case that made a difference in their answers.
Connor went to the first classroom to ask some questions for the Inquiry Club. The teacher gave him five minutes. He hardly had time to write down all the answers. He hurried to the other classrooms. Even though he had collected a lot of information, he still needed to collect more. It would take him too long to visit all of the classrooms. He was going to need some help.

I’m forty and it’s been sixteen years since I left school. Although I have few regrets about my education, there are a few things I wish I’d known earlier as a girl.
1. Keep Trying Even If You Fail
As kids, we try new things fearlessly. If we make mistakes, we keep trying until we learn. But once school starts, parents and teachers usually only praise us when we do things perfectly. What happens We stop trying new things because we’re afraid of getting them wrong. I now remind myself: “I refuse to quit halfway until I make it.”
2. Compare Yourself to Yourself
I always wanted to be the best, and one way of feeling good about myself was to see how much better I was than others. There was only one problem with this. When I saw they were better than me, I felt terrible. But now, instead of comparing myself to others, I ask: “Did I give my best effort ”
3. Don’t Worry Too Much
How much energy do we waste worrying about the future I used to worry a lot. Now I know most things you fear usually never happen. If they happen, then they will most often not be as bad as you expected. Yes, most fears are imaginary. In 6 months, you probably won’t even remember most of the things you worry about now.
If I could go back in time, I would tell my younger self these three important lessons. They would have helped me face challenges with more confidence.
37.What does “afraid of getting them wrong” mean in Paragraph 2
A.Scared of making mistakes. B.Happy to try new things.
C.Excited about challenges. D.Angry at failing tests.
38.How does the writer deal with competition now
A.She avoids competing with others to stay happy. B.She tries to improve herself instead of comparing.
C.She works much harder than others to be the best. D.She asks friends for help when facing challenges.
39.What does the writer think about worrying
A.Worrying helps us prepare for challenges. B.Most worries aren’t as bad as we imagine.
C.People should worry more to avoid mistakes. D.Only smart people worry about the future.
40.What is the main idea of the passage
A.The writer’s school memories. B.Why the writer regretted her education.
C.How to make progress at school. D.Lessons the writer learned late in life.

One cold winter evening, Dr Watson sat by the fireplace in 221B Baker Street, reading a newspaper. Sherlock Holmes, as usual, was pacing the room, deep in thought. Suddenly, there was a loud knock at the door. A young woman in an elegant blue dress rushed in, her face pale with worry.
“Mr Holmes, please help me!” she cried. “My diamond necklace was stolen during my birthday party last night! My father gave it to me before he passed away. It’s priceless!”
Holmes calmly invited her to sit. “Tell me everything, Miss… ”
“Clara White,” she replied, wiping her tears. “The party was at my home in Kensington. Only four close friends and my maid were there. I wore the necklace all evening, but when I went to bed, it was gone!”

Holmes and Watson arrived at Clara’s grand townhouse. The drawing room still had decorations from the party—gold ribbons (丝带), half-empty champagne (香槟酒) glasses, and a piano in the corner.
The five people at the party were Clara’s cousin Mr Edward Green, Mrs Emily Brown, the maid Miss Lucy, her neighbor Dr Henry Cole, and a family friend Mr James Hart.
Holmes examined Clara’s bedroom first. The window was slightly open, and icy wind blew through the curtains.
“Did you open this window, Miss White ” Holmes asked.
“Never! I always lock it,” Clara insisted.
“Someone forced it open from the outside,” Holmes muttered. Outside, he found muddy (泥泞的) footprints along the garden wall.

The Clues Unfold (线索浮现)
Returning to the piano, Holmes looked through the sheet music. “Mr Green, what did you play at 8 p. m. ”
“Moonlight Sonata,” Green answered quickly.
“Yet the sheet on the stand is Für Elise,” Holmes said sharply. “And your shoes—see the mud It matches the garden footprints!”
Green’s face turned red. “I… I needed money! I climbed in through the window and hid the necklace in my coat!”
The Resolution (真相大白)
Holmes took the necklace from Green’s pocket. Clara hugged it tightly, her eyes filled with happy tears. “Thank you, Mr Holmes! How did you know ”
“Simple, my dear,” Holmes said. “The mud matched, and no true pianist forgets his music.” As they left, Watson shook his head in amazement. “Remarkable, Holmes!”

(2025·江苏无锡·一模)My heart was beating so loudly that I was sure everyone could hear it over the noise of the boat motor. I jumped into the water and stood on my skis (滑水板). Slowly the boat moved forward, tightening (拉紧) up the ski rope. I held on for dear life to the handle on the end of the rope while Mum looked at me from the back of the boat with a smile that seemed to say, “I believe in you.”
I was trying very hard to find my earlier feelings of excitement about learning to waterski. “Whose bright idea was this anyway ” I asked myself nervously. In my bright orange life jacket, I sat in the cool water moving up and down gently. I tried to keep the tips of my water skis pointing up out of the water as I had been shown. A wave of fear washed over me. There were just too many instructions to remember.
My little sister Nikki cheered as she jumped up and down in the back of the boat next to Mum. Nikki had learnt to waterski at a very young age. I, on the other hand, always liked underwater sports such as diving. Moving on top of the water was going to be very different for me. But once I mastered (掌握) this, we would have another activity that the whole family could enjoy together.
“Deep breath!” I reminded myself. Dad sped up the boat. “Here we go!” I thought wildly. Mum gave me a big thumbs-up, and the boat rushed forward and gave a strong pull. I pushed up on my legs as hard as I could and let out a scream. I was in fact standing on my skis, skimming across the water, but not for long.
I fell forward and landed face down in the water. Thank goodness, I remembered to let go of the rope. My skis came off, and my life jacket kept me floating on the surface of the lake. “I don’t believe it,” I thought, turning over to my back with a big smile. “I almost felt like I was flying with wings.”
“Let’s do it again.” I called to Dad as he circled the boat around to pick me up.
The second time, the boat sped up again. Suddenly, I was flying. The world turned to be silent, broken only by Nikki’s shouts from the boat, “You did it!”

Andy turned towards his mother. “Leo ”
“Granny’s oldest and favourite brother. He made her that special box that sits beside the window—locked up. The key has been lost forever. Now about those letters…Granny will want them.”
Andy picked that special box and letters up, and then took them to the kitchen. “What did you put in the box, Granny ” Andy asked.
“Nothing! I knew Leo would be joining the army soon. Just before he left, he locked my box and hid the key. He said he would invent a word game for me and promised he would send clues. We got letters instead of clues. Leo’s final letter arrived after we heard the heartbreaking news. Mother was so sad. She tore (撕) it in half.”
Granny watched Andy spread the letters on the table. She whispered, “I always thought Mother threw away all of Leo’s letters.”
Andy pointed at one letter in two pieces. “This must be the last letter Leo sent home.”
Granny picked up one half of the letter, and read, “Dearest Littlest Sister…”
“Leo did send clues. Let’s tape the halves together,” Andy said.
