One of my mom’s sayings might make a huge difference to my marriage. Six years into my marriage, I got a
call from her to wish me a happy anniversary. And then she remarked, “Sarah, the seventh year is always the
hardest. It’s the seven-year itch (痒).” “Mom, that’s a Marilyn Monroe movie” I said, recalling the movie poster
hanging on the wall of her bedroom. Four months after she warned me with her knowledge of the movie, I was
asking for a divorce. And my husband agreed.
After my divorce, I remembered finding out I wasn’t going to get child support. We didn’t have kids, but I still
desired inner child support. So, there I was, crying, and she embraced me, saying, “Sarah, don’t sweat the small
stuff. And I was like,” Mom… that’s the sign above the sofa.”
On another occasion, I called her to seek advice on the topic of remarriage, expressing my uncertainties. She
taught me that I must dance as if no one were watching. I couldn’t help but ask if she was currently in the guest
bathroom. Despite her denial, I knew that was the print above the towel rack (架子)!
For my mom’s birthday the next year, I gifted her a plaque (牌匾) that says “It is what it is.” I got it as a joke
because it’s the most cliched and boring phrase, which is quoted in whatever situations. However, she adored it.
第 4页/共 17页
She hung it above the mirror in the hallway. At least now when I call her and she says, “It is what it is,” I know
exactly where she’s situated.

A It ended as her mother’s wish. B. It improved after the seventh year.
C. It lasted for more than seven years. D. It confirmed her mother’s warning.
5. Why did the author visit mom after the divorce
A. To seek comfort from her mom.
B. To listen to her mom read signs.
C. To ask for child support from her mom.
D. To complain about small stuffs in her marriage.
6. What does the underlined word “cliched” mean in paragraph 4
A. Misleading. B. Encouraging. C. Overused D. Educational.
7. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. It’s What It Is B. Mom’s Wall-Sign Wisdom
C. Mom’s Secret to Success D. The One to Blame for My Divorce

Killer whales hunt fish with clicks and buzzes — they choose and chase their prey with sound waves. But
boat traffic noise is hiding salmon (鲑鱼) from them, making their favorite meal harder to find.
Ocean noise has been increasing over the years, and an international research team recently reported in Global
Change Biology that when the water got too noisy, whales spent more time looking for food but caught fewer fish.
The study tracked every move and sound that individual killer whale made, as well as the sound reaching them.
Researchers found that for every decibel (分贝) increase in the maximum level of background noise reaching
killer whales, they were four percent more likely to search for food and had a 12.5 percent lower chance of catching
a fish they chased.
Catching fewer fish means eating less and if the whales eat too little, they are at higher risk of having health
problems, delaying or skipping having babies, or failing to support babies they do have.
The killer whales are listed as endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act, and only 73 or 74
individuals remain. In Canada, they have healthier numbers, but Canadian law still lists them as threatened. The
salmon that killer whales mostly rely on for food face their own challenges, such as water pollution, and warming
第 5页/共 17页
freshwater habitats.
The noise problem is one that researchers view as long lasting, yet possibly more straightforward to fix than
declining fish populations or pollution—ships could simply slow down to make less noise. Washington State law
requires vessels to reduce to a maximum seven knot speed within a half mile of the whales and limits the distance
between a vessel and killer whales. The state is increasing the minimum distance to 1,000 yards starting January 1,
2025.
Buzz about innovations in propeller (推进器) technology is also positive. A propeller by Sharrow Marine, for
example, is based on a design for a quieter drone propeller. If claims of a more efficient and quieter boat propeller
are true, that’s good news for both reducing fuel use and quieting traffic.
8. How did the scientists do the researches
A. By doing experiments. B. By surveying questions.
C. By tracing killer whales. D. By analyzing other researches.
9. What happens when ocean noise gets higher
A. Killer whales do more fish hunting.
B. Killer whales don’t feel like eating.
C. The number of fish is fast decreasing.
D. Fish hide themselves from killer whales.
10. Why does the author mention the threats the salmon face
A. To prevent overfishing.
B. To help reduce water pollution.
C. To protect salmon from extinction.
D. To stress a challenge of killer whales.
11. What’s new about the propeller by Sharrow Marine
A. It helps the ship go faster.
B. It limits the speed of the ship.
C. It produces less noise from the ship.
D. It equips the ship with new technical devices.
D
In 2016, Olivia Brunner, like millions of Americans, decided to take an at-home DNA test. But Brunner wasn’
t motivated by pure curiosity. She bore a striking resemblance to her then-boyfriend, Greg — from their hair and
第 6页/共 17页
skin colors down to their facial expressions — and for years, people had suspected that they looked related.
Their worries turned out to be for nothing, and the New Hampshire couple married last year. But why do so
many couples look alike
Lookalike couples have captured public fascination for years. Back in 1987, scientists from the University of
Michigan set out to study the phenomenon of married couples who grow to look more alike over time. Their theory,
which scientists still cite today, was that decades of shared emotions and experiences result in a closer resemblance
due to similar wrinkles and expressions. However, it is possible that couples look alike not because of similar
experiences they have had later in life, but because lookalikes deeply attract each other before getting married. How
do so many lookalikes end up together in the first place
Despite the old idea that opposites attract, Indianapolis-based social psychologist Justin Lehmiller, who is a
research fellow at the Kinsey Institute and author of Tell Me What You Want, says people are naturally attracted by
people who are familiar, even though the whole process probably occurs without consciousness. That phenomenon
extends to appearance. “What is familiar to you tends to be what you like and are drawn to. You’re familiar with
your own appearance, so seeing other people who share those similar sorts of features might lead to more liking for
that reason,” he says.
“Attraction is this very complex phenomenon, and there are so many factors that play a role in it,” Lehmiller
says. “Initial similarity might lead you to be attracted to somebody, but it doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll have a
happy relationship. Attraction is not something that’s easy to predict.”
12. What is the main concern of Olivia Brunner
A Her unpleasing appearance.
B. The blood tie with her boyfriend.
C. The low reliability of the DNA test.
D. Relatives’ disagreement over their marriage.
13. What did the 1987 study find
A. Lookalikes had fewer wrinkles.
B. Couples bore a similarity before marriage.
C. Similar experiences made couples look alike.
D. The resemblance would stimulate similar emotions.
14. What can we learn from Paragraph 4
第 7页/共 17页
A. People choose familiar partners on purpose.
B. People are easier to have feelings for opposites.
C. People see appearance as a decisive factor in marriage.
D. People are often drawn to someone similar in appearance.
15. Which of the following statements will Justin Lehmiller agree with
A. Attraction won’t last.
B. Identifying the reason for attraction is hard.
C. Finding a partner through familiarity is wise.
D. Couples are attracted simply by their similarity.

When I was 11, I began to understand how much my dad gave up for our family. With a modest income, he
always managed to make sure we had what we needed, often at the expense of his own desires. His love showed in
the way he always put us first. I wanted to do something special for him this Christmas.
One cold evening in December, I was out with my dad doing some last-minute shopping. The streets were
filled with the festive spirit, and the shops were bright with colorful lights. We were looking for gifts for each other
and for the rest of the family. I had been saving up the extra money money I earned from helping our neighbors
with their yard work.
As we walked through the market, I noticed a stall (摊位) that caught my eye. There was a beautiful wooden
bird carving, highly detailed and lifelike. Its feathers were nicely cut, seeming to move gently in a light wind. Its
eyes, made from little, shiny rocks, looked very real. The carving felt warm and handmade, making it stand out
from the other stuff at the market. I remembered my dad mentioning how he had been reading a book about birds
and how fascinated he was with their flight and behavior. I knew this carving would be the perfect gift.
I turned the carving over to check the price and was relieved to see that I could afford it with the money I had
saved. But my dad was right there with me. There was no way I could buy it without him noticing. A moment later,
he spotted the carving too. His eyes lit up, and he picked it up, admiring the skillful workmanship. He turned it over,
and his face fell when he saw the price label. He gently put it back, shaking his head, and we moved on.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】Dear Ms. White,
I am writing to propose my suggestion for the upcoming volunteer activity organized by our English Club.
I earnestly advocate that we partner with a local community center to offer free English conversation courses
for children from disadvantaged families. During the two-week teaching sessions, our club members could design
interactive lessons, incorporating games and multimedia resources to make learning engaging and effective. By
sharing our knowledge, we can have a positive impact on their educational experience. Additionally, this initiative
provides us with an excellent opportunity to enhance our communication and teaching skills. It will also reinforce

the bond between our school and the local community, nurturing a mutually beneficial relationship.
I would be very grateful if you could give my idea due consideration May the volunteer endeavor meet with
resounding triumph!
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】
As my dad was looking for good deals, I hurried back to the stall. “Quick, please wrap this for me,” I said to
the seller, trying to keep my voice from showing how excited I was. The seller, a friendly guy with a smile,
wrapped the bird carving quickly and well. I gave him the money I had saved, feeling a mix of joy and anticipation.
As I carefully placed the gift into my bag, I felt a thrill of secrecy and happiness, knowing I was carrying a surprise
that I had to keep hidden until the big day. With a final, satisfied nod to the seller, I hurried to join my dad.
After a seemingly endless wait, Christmas morning finally came. The house was full of excitement. We sat
around the tree, and my dad looked at the pile of gifts. He picked up the wrapped package I had hidden. “This one
is from you,” he said, his eyes curious. He unwrapped it slowly, and when he saw the bird, his eyes got big. “This
is the one I liked at the market,” he said softly. He looked at me and smiled, his eyes a little watery. “Thank you,”
he whispered, hugging me tight. In that moment, I understood the true joy of giving and the love that a simple
gesture can express.
