When I think about my school experience, there are few positives I can take from it. I had many difficulties in school, struggled to engage in certain lessons, and often felt a lack of motivation. Admittedly, I was a class clown and almost definitely used my humor at the wrong time on too many occasions.
The one shining light was Ms. Sponge. She was my English teacher for much of secondary school. Ms. Sponge helped me discover my love of writing. By calling me up to read in front of the class or asking me to share my stories, she created a stage for me to excel. She did what no other teacher was capable of — seeing beyond my defense mechanism of being a class clown and bringing out the best in me. Soon, I began to enjoy English lessons, knowing that every writing task was an opportunity for escapism.
My love for the written word hit new heights when I started writing my own poetry. This later developed into songwriting, which quickly became my favorite way to express myself. Before long, I started performing songs in school assemblies, which gave me the confidence to perform at music events after I left school. Writing, in all its forms, became my passion and something I had a natural talent for — and I would never have discovered it if not for Ms. Sponge.
Despite her impact on me, I never dreamed of becoming a teacher myself. Even when I eventually found myself working in education after university, I was initially content with the impact I was making as a teaching assistant and a sports coach. However, the more I worked with disadvantaged children, the greater my desire became to make a real difference. I wanted to change the narrative for young boys who came from backgrounds similar to mine, and I soon realized that becoming a fully qualified teacher was the best way to do this.
Ms. Sponge’s kindness and love of teaching planted a seed in me. This is why I love being a teacher, particularly to primary school children.

26.When did the author’s love of writing reach a new high
A.When she engaged in teaching. B.When she began writing poetry.
C.When she performed at music events. D.When she graduated from university.
27.Why did the author ultimately decide to become a teacher
A.She wanted to give back to her community.
B.She realized that teaching was the only career she enjoyed.
C.She wanted to earn more respect and stability in her job.
D.She felt pressured by Ms. Sponge’s expectations.
The Atbai Desert, a part of the Sahara Desert, is one of the driest places on Earth, with a sandy and barren landscape that averages zero millimeters of rainfall each year. So, archaeologists were surprised when they recently discovered rock art showing boats and cattle in an area that is 60 miles away from the closest body of water.
“It was surprising to find cattle carved on desert rock walls as they require plenty of water and wide-open grassland, and would not survive in the dry and barren environment of the Sahara today,” said Julien Cooper, an archaeologist from Macquarie University. “The discovery of boat images in the rock art this distant from the Nile or Red Sea was also surprising.”
Archaeologists believe the discovery of ancient rock art in the Sahara Desert provides clear. evidence that this harsh landscape was once a far more hospitable grassland, supporting the theory of a once “Green Sahara” around 3,000 B.C.E. During this period, the area was a grassy plain with lakes and rivers, sustaining a variety of wildlife and human activities such as cattle herding. However, changes in African monsoon (季风) patterns transformed the Sahara into the barren desert we know today. Now, only hardy animals like camels and goats can survive there.
The rock art’s detailed carvings suggest that the creators spent plenty of time in the area, further indicating that the region was once supportive of human life. The transition from a “Green Sahara” to a barren desert changed not only the physical landscape but also the cultural and social structures of the time. As the climate grew drier, many residents were forced to migrate closer to the Nile, contributing to the formation of early urban states and culture in Egypt and Nubia.
The discovery offers valuable insight into the changes that have occurred in the Sahara over thousands of years. It highlights the importance of studying ancient artifacts to better understand the history of our planet and the impact of climate change on human civilization.

B.Cattle could survive in the desert before 3,000 B.C.E.
C. The African monsoon had brought much rainfall to Sahara.
D.Human activities posed a big threat to Sahara’s wild animals.
30.What resulted from the transition from a “Green Sahara” to a barren desert
A.It forced many residents to leave the Nile. B.It made the region isolated from other states.
C.It facilitated trade links between Egypt and Nubia. D.It greatly affected local culture and social patterns.

Math anxiety is far from uncommon, but those who experience it often try to avoid math altogether. Research from the University of Chicago provides evidence of a link between math anxiety and avoidance.
Studying nearly 500 adults through a computer program called the Choose-And-Solve Task (CAST), researchers gave participants a choice between math and word problems labeled “easy” and “hard.” The easy problems were always worth two cents, while the hard problems were worth up to six cents. Participants were also told that the computer task would modify the questions based on their abilities, enabling them to handle about 70% of the hard problems.
Although participants attempted hard word problems when offered higher monetary rewards, they rarely made the same choice for math problems. “We found we couldn’t even pay math-anxious individuals to do difficult math problems,” researcher Rozek stated.
The findings also challenges a common belief that math anxiety and math avoidance are caused by poor math skills. “If you take two students who are good at math, the math-anxious one will perform worse than the one who isn’t anxious,” the study suggests.
This mentality doesn’t just stop people from taking calculus courses or choosing STEM careers — it can also affect everyday interactions with math, such as leaving a tip at a restaurant. However, all is not lost. Reframing anxiety from negative to positive could help math-anxious individuals re-engage. Providing guidance to those anxious about exams may improve their performance. Rozek suggests telling them, “If you’re anxious, it just means your body is preparing to focus and do well.” Another possible solution is to create early positive experiences with math. For example, telling stories that combine math and solving problems related to the story may help reduce anxiety and avoidance.
32.What does the underlined word “modify” mean in Paragraph 2
A.Adjust B.Supply C.Solve D.Add
33.What does the study find
A.Math anxiety interacts with math avoidance.
B.Word problems are often regarded as easier.
C.Fear of math can beat the desire for higher rewards.
D.People underestimate their mathematical ability.
34.What is a common misunderstanding about math anxiety
A.It is the cause of math avoidance. B.It causes people to be bored with math.
C.It is a complex phenomenon in life. D.It results from poor math performance.
35.What is the last paragraph mainly about
A.Consequences of math avoidance. B.Ways to break the anxiety-avoidance link.
C.Explanations for math anxiety. D.Mental barriers to mathematical achievement.

Bobby was getting cold sitting out in his backyard in the snow. Bobby didn't wear boots, or rather, he didn't own any. The thin sneakers he wore had a few holes in them and they did a poor job of keeping out the cold.
Bobby had been in his backyard for about an hour already. Try as he might, he could not come up with an idea for his mother's Christmas gift. He shook his head as he thought, “This is useless. Even if I do come up with an idea, I don't have any money for a gift.”
Wiping tears from his eyes, Bobby started walking down to the street where the shops were. It wasn't easy being six without a father, particularly when he needed a man to talk to.
Bobby walked from shop to shop, looking into each decorated window. Everything seemed so beautiful but so out of reach. It was starting to get dark and Bobby reluctantly turned to walk home when suddenly his eyes caught the glimmer (微光) of the setting sun's rays reflecting on something on the roadside. He reached down and discovered a shiny dime
Never before had Bobby felt as wealthy as he did at that moment. As he held his newly-found treasure, warmth spread throughout his entire body and he walked into the first store. His excitement quickly turned cold when salesperson after salesperson told him that he could not buy anything with only a dime.
He saw a flower shop and went inside to wait in line. When the shop owner asked if he could help him, Bobby presented the dime and asked if he could buy one flower for his mother's Christmas gift. The shop owner looked at Bobby and his one dime offering. Then he put his hand on Bobby's shoulder, saying, “You just wait here and I'll see what I can do for you.” As Bobby waited, he looked at the beautiful flowers and even though he was a boy, he could see why mothers and girls loved flowers.
Paragraph 1:
A few minutes later, the shop owner came out.

Hello everyone. Today I’m going to share with you one of my learning tools. I’m really glad my English teacher told me about Verbo. It’s a fantastic free language learning website. What makes it different is its focus on individual learning styles. The first time you join the website, you’ll need to answer a list of questions. By doing this, you’ll know how you learn best. Then, you’re offered learning resources which work with your learning style. For example, I discovered I learn best when I hear something. Therefore, most of my lessons are recordings, and I’m asked to repeat what I’ve learned, which helps me remember. My friend learns better through reading and writing, so she gets a lot of worksheets to print out and use. One resource we both use and enjoy is the “side-by-side books”. They are online books which provide the story in both Chinese and English. My friend tends to just read them, but I love that I can listen to them, too. I really recommend Verbo, because there’s something for everyone!

根据第一段中的“So, archaeologists were surprised when they recently discovered rock art showing boats and cattle in an area that is 60 miles away from the closest body of water.(因此,考古学家最近在距离最近的水域60英里的地方发现了展示船只和牛的岩石艺术,这让他们感到惊讶)”可知,考古学家最近发现了展示船只和牛的岩石艺术,结合上文“The Atbai Desert, a part of the Sahara Desert, is one of the driest places on Earth, with a sandy and barren landscape that averages zero millimeters of rainfall each year.(阿拜沙漠是撒哈拉沙漠的一部分,是地球上最干燥的地方之一,沙质贫瘠,年平均降雨量为零毫米)”可知,阿拜沙漠是地球上最干燥的地方之一,年平均降雨量为零毫米。
根据第三段中的“Archaeologists believe the discovery of ancient rock art in the Sahara Desert provides clear. evidence that this harsh landscape was once a far more hospitable grassland, supporting the theory of a once “Green Sahara” around 3,000 B.C.E.(考古学家认为,在撒哈拉沙漠发现的古代岩石艺术提供了清晰的线索。这些证据表明,这片贫瘠的土地曾经是一片更加适宜居住的草原,支持了公元前3000年左右曾经存在“绿色撒哈拉”的理论)”可知,古老的岩石艺术表明了撒哈拉沙漠曾经是一片草原。故选A项。
根据第四段中的“As the climate grew drier, many residents were forced to migrate closer to the Nile, contributing to the formation of early urban states and culture in Egypt and Nubia.(随着气候变得越来越干燥,许多居民被迫迁移到离尼罗河更近的地方,这为埃及和努比亚早期城市国家和文化的形成做出了贡献)”可知,从“绿色撒哈拉”到贫瘠沙漠的转变极大地影响了当地的文化和社会模式。故选D项。
根据首段“The Atbai Desert, a part of the Sahara Desert, is one of the driest places on Earth, with a sandy and barren landscape that averages zero millimeters of rainfall each year. So, archaeologists were surprised when they recently discovered rock art showing boats and cattle in an area that is 60 miles away from the closest body of water.(阿拜沙漠是撒哈拉沙漠的一部分,是地球上最干燥的地方之一,沙质贫瘠,年平均降雨量为零毫米。

根据第三段“Although participants attempted hard word problems when offered higher monetary rewards, they rarely made the same choice for math problems. ‘We found we couldn’t even pay math-anxious individuals to do difficult math problems,’ researcher Rozek stated.(尽管参与者在获得更高的金钱奖励时尝试了困难的文字问题,但他们很少在数学问题上做出同样的选择。研究人员Rozek说:‘我们发现,我们甚至无法付钱让数学焦虑的人做困难的数学题。’)”可知,研究发现,当承诺更高奖金时,参与者会尝试较难的文字问题,但他们很少选择较难的数学问题,甚至连金钱奖励都无法促使数学焦虑者去挑战难题。因此,数学焦虑会超过对更高奖励的追求,故选C。
34.细节理解题。根据第四段中“The findings also challenges a common belief that math anxiety and math avoidance are caused by poor math skills. ‘If you take two students who are good at math, the math-anxious one will perform worse than the one who isn’t anxious,’ the study suggests.(这一发现也挑战了人们普遍认为的数学焦虑和数学回避是由糟糕的数学技能造成的。研究表明:‘如果你选择两个数学很好的学生,数学焦虑的那个会比不焦虑的那个表现得更差。’)”可知,研究发现驳斥了一种广泛持有的观念,即数学焦虑和回避数学的根源是数学成绩不好。这表明数学焦虑并非源于数学能力低,故选D。
35.主旨大意题。最后一段“This mentality doesn’t just stop people from taking calculus courses or choosing STEM careers — it can also affect everyday interactions with math, such as leaving a tip at a restaurant.(这种心态不仅会阻止人们学习微积分课程或选择STEM职业,还会影响与数学的日常互动,比如在餐馆给小费)”首先提到数学焦虑对学习和日常生活的影响,随后下文“Reframing anxiety from negative to positive could help math-anxious individuals re-engage.(将焦虑从消极转变为积极可以帮助数学焦虑的人重新投入)”和“Another possible solution is to create early positive experiences with math.(另一个可能的解决方案是创造早期积极的数学体验)”作者提出两种方法来打破数学焦虑与数学回避之间的联系:1.

There, before Bobby's eyes, lay twelve red roses, with leaves of green and tiny white flowers all tied together with a big silver tape. Bobby's heart sank as the owner placed them gently into a long white box. “That will be ten cents, young man.” the shop keeper said, reaching out his hand for the dime. Slowly, Bobby moved his hand to give the man his dime. Could this be true He wondered.
Paragraph 2:
With the bunch of roses in his hands, Bobby walked out of the door and then broke into a run. Within minutes, he was at home, still breathless. “Look, Mother, what have I bought for you ” Bobby called out in the backyard. Mother came out from inside the house. She could hardly believe her eyes upon seeing the beautiful flowers in front of her. “Merry Christmas!” Bobby said and began to tell her everything he had experienced in the flower shop. Tearfully, Mother hugged her son in her arms. Standing in the bitter cold air, they somehow didn't feel cold at all.
