17-year-old Tibetan girl Cigla is a freshman at Nagqu No.2 Senior High School in Lhasa, which sits 3,650 meters above sea level. She now plays point guard for the school’s 12-member female basketball team.
“Practice makes perfect. You get used to the altitude when you love the sport and train hard enough,” said the potential basketball star, who has been crazy about the sport since taking it up three years ago.
With outstanding speed and accurate passes, she never fails to shine on the basketball court, even when she competes against the boys. Though she is a freshman in high school, Cigla already has a clear picture of her future — entering a sports college to study basketball. In the eyes of Cigla, who comes from a poor herder’s (牧民的) family in northern Xizang, studying in Lhasa, the most developed city in this area, has made it much easier for her to realize her basketball dream.
With an average altitude of over 4,500 meters, Nagqu is among the most uninhabitable places in Xizang. Low-oxygen environments and extreme weather have long influenced the health of Nagqu students, hampering the development of primary education in the area.
Like Cigla, many students at the school are from poor farmers’ and herders’ families. Dawa Droma, a senior student also on the school’s female basketball team, recalled, “I had never touched a basketball before that game but joined the class team anyway. When I scored and heard my classmates cheer for me, I couldn’t feel more proud. That’s how I fell in love with basketball and never looked back”. Reflecting on the influence of basketball on her life, Dawa Droma said the sport had helped her get fit and build up confidence over the years. “Meeting players from different schools has certainly made me a more outgoing person.” she said.

A new study led by PhD candidate Ashley Kim and Professor James Nieh has found that artificial light is not only a health concern for humans, it also affects the sleep patterns of honeybees and poses a threat to their essential role as pollinators (传粉者).
“Our research shows just how sensitive honeybees are to changes in their environment, particularly to something as seemingly harmless as artificial light,” said. Kim of the study: “By disturbing their sleep patterns, we see clear evidence of reduced sleep periods. This raises significant concerns, not only for bee health but also for the health of ecosystems that depend on them for pollination.”
Like us, when bees experience a poor night’s sleep, problems in behavior and function emerge (出现). Sleep is very important for the health and fitness of groups of bees since they depend on a complicated system of communication known as the “waggle dance” that informs nestmates about the location of food sources in the environment. Bees dance more poorly and therefore do not communicate as well if they do not get enough sleep.
Through a series of experiments, researchers compared groups of bees that underwent normal sleep in the dark with others that were subjected to (遭受) continuous artificial light. The results clearly showed that prolonged (长期的) exposure to light significantly affected the sleep pattern of honeybees, leading to bad behaviors.
Among the details described in the paper, bees exposed to continuous light slept less and were more frequently disturbed by other bees compared to those kept in normal darkness. Also, bees exposed to continuous light exhibited a preference for darker areas within their experimental cages.

In a world where tech companies often compete to create the next productivity tool, a new device is breaking away from the pack. Meet Friend: a new wearable AI companion that you wear around your neck. The small device records your every word and interaction and responds accordingly by text. They cost $99 and are expected to ship out in early 2025.
The device comes at a time when loneliness and social isolation (孤独) are at record highs. Studies indicate that 61% of young people in the U.S. suffer from serious loneliness, a statistic that reveals a growing mental health crisis. While AI reshapes all the ways we interact in jobs, healthcare and entertainment — more and more people report feeling socially isolated, Schiffmann, Meet Friend’s founder, sees it differently: the device isn’t a replacement for human relationships but rather a way to fill the gaps when human companionship is hard to come by.
AI companionship is controversial (有争议的). While some people, like Schiffmann, argue that it can help people feel less isolated, others worry that AI relationships might displace real human connections, and thus make people feel more lonely. If you are someone who already struggles with human interactions, the thinking goes, why would you continue to subject yourself to them when you have an AI friend who's fun and uncomplicated, and doesn’t come with all the baggage of another person
But so far, the research doesn’t seem to support this fear. Drake-Maples at Stanford University surveyed more than 1,000 students who used the AI chatbot Replika, and investigated their feelings of loneliness and perceived social support. Roughly half of these users reported decreased anxiety, and a feeling of social support. Nearly a quarter of those surveyed said they are more able to handle stress in their current relationship because of Replika’s advice.
It is still a new field though, and Drake-Maples says there needs to be guidelines. “I strongly believe that you do need to have ethical guidelines around AI companions pushing people back when appropriate, towards human relationships,” she says. These could be gentle reminders like “Hey, you should go chat with somebody about that” or “Go practice this now with a real human.”
