It amazed me—every time I saw Joe he was smiling. It didn't matter whether he had to stop at a stop light, or if he was the seventh person in line at the bank, and the teller ended her job just before he got there. Joe always smiled. It made me wonder why he always seemed so happy.
Having observed Joe with other people, I noticed something else too. Joe asked people how they were doing, and really seemed to listen to their answers. He showed pity to someone who was hurting, and had kind words, and offered to help in any way he could.
It made me think. What if I tried to smile more An experiment began when I went to the supermarket. I smiled as I went up and down the supermarket and people I didn't even know smiled back at me. Some even spoke! The little kid in the cart who was giving his mother a hard time saw me smile, he stopped talking and then made a shy attempt at a smile. The man in the cart for the disabled needed help to reach for something, and I got it for him. The smile even transferred over to him, and he thanked me.
As I drove home, I was smiling. Now I know a smile is a small thing, but what if we all tried to smile a few more times each day I couldn't believe how great I felt. Nothing in my life had changed, but maybe it had. What I had learned was that such a small thing could lift not only my spirits, but also the spirits of those around me. So smile!

A. He has nothing to worry about. B. He lives a very hard life.
C. He is kind and ready to help others. D. He often asks others to smile.

A. It was a failure. B. It proved nothing.
C. It was unacceptable. D. It was quite satisfying.
C
When I was in my first year of high school, I had a terrible time when every area of my life was a disaster. I felt so hopeless and alone that I thought everything was impossible.
On one such day, I was walking from class across the school to catch the school bus home, with my head down, fighting tears of total hopelessness, when a young man came down the sidewalk toward me. Though I had never seen him before, I did not want him to see that I was in such low spirits, so I turned my head away and hoped to hurry past. I thought he’d walk on by, but he moved until he was directly in front of me, waited until I looked up, and then smiled.
Looking into my eyes, this stranger spoke in a quiet voice: “Whatever is wrong will pass. You’re going to be OK, just hang on.” He then smiled again and walked away.
I can’t explain the effect of that man’s unexpected kindness and caring! He gave me the one thing that I’d lost completely—hope. I looked for him in our school to thank him, but never saw him again.
That was thirty years ago. And I’ve never forgotten that moment. Over the years, whenever I see someone who is in trouble, I will always think of that young man and try to give a flash of hope in the dark wherever I can. I carry things for people when they are too heavy for them, sit with naughty babies in the waiting room while their mothers are busy, or talk to tired couples at the checkout line or it could be anything. If you keep your head up, your heart will show you the place that needs hope.

B. The author traveled to a lot of places to look for the young man but failed.

Many travellers are familiar with the UNESCO’s World Heritage List. However, less is known about the organization’s List of World Heritage in Danger. It currently specifies 53 World Heritage sites under threat of “serious and specific dangers” due to factors such as climate change, armed conflict, and development pressures. The accelerated degeneration of these cultural treasures is a reality that should concern the world, since the younger generation may not have the opportunity to visit them.
For this reason, insurance company Budget Direct, and NeoMam Studios, a creative studio based in the UK, have created a series of GIFs to restore World Heritage sites and demonstrate what these ruins would have looked like if they had been preserved.
Drawing attention to sites at risk, the project aims to give everyone the opportunity to visit these sites virtually. It started with in-depth research around the sites on the List of World Heritage in Danger. Based on the results, the team made a selection according to two main criteria: First, they were man-made places. Second, they still had standing elements. Focusing on the selected sites, the team worked with architects Jelena Popovic and Keremcan Kirilmaz and industrial designer Erdem Batirbek to research and illustrate six of these legendary locations.
In this series of GIFs, six sites are digitally restored to their former glory. They include Hatra in Iraq, Leptis Magna in Libya, Palmyra in Syria, Portobelo-San Lorenzo in Panama, Nan Madol in the Federated States of Micronesia as well as the Old City of Jerusalem and its Walls.
Time does not stand still, and neither does technology. Thanks to these photorealistic images and electronic devices, we can travel, without leaving home, to those places that, whatever their future may be, will always be part of the collective memory.
12. What does the underlined word “degeneration” in Paragraph 1 probably mean
A. improvement B. increasing C. adaptation D. worsening
13. Why did the team develop the project
A. The List of World Heritage in Danger is not well-known.
B. Natural and human forces are destroying World Heritage sites.
C. Young people may lose the chance to visit some World Heritage sites.
D. They wondered what some World Heritage sites originally looked like.
14. What endangered World Heritage sites could be chosen for this project
A. Natural sites that had standing elements.
B. Man-made sites that had standing elements.
C. Natural sites that were damaged severely.
D. Man-made sites that were destroyed completely.
15. What does the author try to convey in the last paragraph
A. Technologies make travelling around more convenient.
B. Technologies help people visit World Heritage sites virtually.
C. More sites on the list are digitally restored to their former glory.
D. There is no need to worry about the future of World Heritage sites.

I couldn’t forget the way I was frozen in front of the class today. My teacher, Mr. Liu had divided the class into groups to do speeches. Today was my turn. However, my hands shook so badly that I couldn’t read my notes. My voice became softer even to silence. Mr. Liu kindly ended my part of speech even though I clearly didn’t finish. He also asked me to stay after class for a moment.
“Betty, I know you are shy, but you worked so hard on this project. I’d hate to see you give up on yourself.” Mr. Liu said, “If I give you another chance until tomorrow, do you think you can find courage ” I nodded, grateful for the chance. I went as quickly as I could to my next class, keeping my head down and hoping the school day would end soon.
When I reached home that afternoon, I could see an inviting light coming from the kitchen windows. Mum was baking(烘焙). She studied my face as I came into the kitchen. “What’s wrong, Betty ”
Tears shone in my eyes. I told her the whole story. Mum was silent for a moment with her hands busy with the cake. “Why is it that you can talk to me about anything and everything but you can’t talk to your class ” Mum asked. She set the time right and then said, “Let me show you something.”
I followed her to the bedroom. There she showed me a book filled with pictures. In it there was a blue ribbon(丝带) that said “First Place” and a picture of herself when she was very young, standing with her parents.
“I won it for public speaking. I started the school year as the shyest girl on the speech team, but I ended the year as the blue ribbon winner. It wasn’t easy at first—not sure of myself at all. I worked hard, and mostly I faced my tears. You just need to find your courage.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

I’m Li Hua, a high school student from China. Learning that you’re planning a trip to China, I’d like to recommend my hometown, Chongqing, to you.
Renowned as “Mountain City” and “Foggy City”, Chongqing boasts a history of over 3,000 years, with many well-preserved ancient sites like Ciqikou Ancient Town, where you can explore traditional architecture and local culture. As a mountain city, it’s famous for stunning night views from Nanshan Scenic Area and the spectacular Hongya Cave. What’s more, the friendly and hospitable locals here always make visitors feel at home. A trip to Chongqing would be incomplete without tasting its spicy yet addictive hotpot.
I sincerely hope you’ll have an unforgettable experience here!
Best wishes,

【47题答案】
【答案】 Hearing Mum’s words, I stared at the valuable blue ribbon, lost in thought. What was it that made me so afraid But still no answer came out. Soon the cake was finished. We went back to the kitchen for the baked cake. Mum cut a slice for the sweet cake and handed it to me, saying, “You can make it.” I raised the warm cake to my mouth. It was so delicious and fragrant. Suddenly I knew where I could find my courage. It was from my mum’s love.
The next day I walked to the front of the classroom to give my speech. Seeing the quiet classroom, I couldn’t help but feel nervous again, my mind going blind and my voice trembling. Then I saw the blue ribbon which my mum tied to my wrist. I thought of Mum’s warm cake, her love and her inspiring experience. Then I took a deep breath and gave my speech with confidence. This time there was no fear any more but a big success and a round of applause.
