There are three kinds of goals: short-term, medium-range and long-term goals. Short-range goals are those that usually deal with current activities, which we can apply on a daily basis. Such goals can be achieved in a week or less, or two weeks, or possible months. It should be remembered that just as a building is no stronger than its foundation, out long-term goals cannot amount to very munch without the achievement of solid short-term goals. Upon completing our short-term goals, we should date the occasion and then add new short-term goals that will build on those that have been completed.
The intermediate goals base on the foundation of the short-range goals. They might deal with just one term of school or the entire school year, or they could even extend for several years. Any time you move a step at a time, you should never allow yourself to become discouraged or overwhelmed. As you complete each step, you will enforce the belief in your ability to grow and succeed. And as your list of completion dates grow, your motivation and desire will increase.
Long-range goals may be related to our dreams of the future. They might cover five years or more. Life is not a static thing. We should never allow a long-term goal to limit us or our course of action.

The economy of the United states after 1952 was the economy of a well-fed, almost fully employed people. Despite occasional alarms, the country escaped any postwar depression and lived in a state of boom. A n economic survey of the year 1955, a typical year of the 1950’s, may be typical as illustrating the rapid economic growth of the decade. The national output was value at 10 percent above that of 1954 (1955 output was estimated at 392 billion dollars). The production of manufacturers was about 40 percent more than it had averaged in the years immediately following World War 2. The country’s business spent about 30billion dollars for new factories and machinery. National income available for spending was almost a third greater than it had been it had been in 1950. Consumers spent about 256 billion dollars; that is about 700 million dollars a day ,or about twenty-five million dollars every hour , all round the clock. Sixty-five million people held jobs and only a little more than two million wanted jobs but could not find them . Only agriculture complained that it was not sharing in the room. To some observers this was an ominous echo of the mid-1920’s . As farmer’s share of their products declined, marketing costs rose. 希腊神话之潘多拉的盒子
After the stealing of fire,Zeus became increasingly unkind to men. One day he ordered his son Hephaestus to build an image of a beautiful maiden out of clay. He then asked the gods and goddesses to award her with different kinds of gifts. Among others, Athena clothed her in an attractive coat and Hermes gave her the power of telling lies. A charming young lady, she was the first woman that ever lived. Zeus called her Pandora. Because she had received from each of the gods and goddesses a gift. The gift was harmful to men.
Zeus decided to send her down to men as a present. So Hermes them messenger brought her to Epimetheus, brother of Prometheus. The greatness of her beauty touched the hearts of all who looked upon her, and Epimetheus happily received her into his house. He had quite forgotten Pometheus' warning: never to accept anything from Zeus. The couple lived a happy life for some time. Then trouble came on to the human world.
When he was busy with teaching men the art of living, Prometheus had left a big cask in the care of Epimetheus. He had warned his brother not to open the lid.Pandora was a curious woman. She had been feeling very disappointed that her husband did not allow her to take a look at the contents of the cask. One day, when Epimetheus was out,she lifted the lid and out it came unrest and war, Plague and sickness, theft and violence, grief sorrow, and all the other evils. The human world was hence to experience these evils. Only hope stayed within the mouth of the jar and never flew out. So men always have hope within their hearts.

Casual Fridays are days when the usual dress code of an office is relaxed. Since Fridays mark the start of the weekend in many countries, behavior in general tends to be more relaxed on Fridays, with some employers not being as particular about standards, and sometimes this is formalized in a casual Friday policy. Truly casual clothing like sweatpants and t-shirts is usually not satisfying.
The casual Friday concept was one of the first signs that strict dress codes for offices were starting to relax. The principle of Dress-Down Fridays seems to have appeared around the 1950s, probably in response to changing attitudes about careers and the workplace. Over time, some offices have relaxed their dress codes even more, adopting a business ( http: / / www. / what-are-casual-fridays.htm" \l "#" \t "_blank ) casual dress code every day.
On casual Fridays, employees may wear clothing which is classified as “business casual,” meaning that it still obeys certain standards. Clothing must be clean and in good repair, with no spots or discolorations(变色). Men are generally allowed to wear casual trousers and bright-colored clothes, and in some offices they may be allowed to wear button down shirts or polo shirts, with or without a tie. Women tend to wear neat skirts or dresses; casual trousers are common and generally perfectly acceptable, except in very conservative workplaces.
As a general rule, extremely casual clothing like jeans, shorts, t-shirts, tank tops(吊带衫), and so forth is discouraged on casual Fridays. Employees are still expected to make an effort to look professional, out of respect to their offices and their customers.
Many people feel that casual Fridays are good for employees’ mood, encouraging employees to express their individuality and feel more comfortable in the office. Others feel that business casual dress and the concept of casual Fridays devalues the workplace, by taking a sense of formality and respect away. Approaches to casual Fridays vary, depending on the industry and the nation; the technology industry, for example, is well known for casual dress in general, while major financial companies tend to dislike casual dress.
1. From the second paragraph, we can infer _______________.
A. the casual Friday concept is out of fashion
B. it’s forbidden to wear casual clothing in offices before
C. the idea of casual Fridays has originated from the early 1990s
D. employees can wear all kinds of casual clothing every day now.
2. The underlined word “devalue” in the last paragraph means ____________.
A. think little of B. think highly of
C. estimate highly D. take the place of
3. Generally speaking, on casual Fridays as a worker in a company you can wear __________.
A. jeans B. tank tops C. shorts D. polo shirts
4. The article most probably appears in the newspaper Column ___________.
A. Sports B. Entertainment C. Culture D. Customs

The Ants and the Grasshopper
The Ants were spending a fine winter's day drying grain collected in the summertime. A Grasshopper, perishing with famine, passed by and earnestly begged for a little food. The Ants inquired of him, "Why did you not treasure up food during the summer ' He replied, "I had not leisure enough. I passed the days in singing." They then said in derision: "If you were foolish enough to sing all the summer, you must dance supperless to bed in the winter."
