In the South China Sea, there is a group of Jiaoren. Their tears become pearls (珍珠）after they fall. To the north of Kunlun Mountains, there is a monster (怪物）called Xiang Liu, which has nine heads with human faces but the body of a snake. These magic characters are from the ancient book Shan Hai Jing.
Shan Hai Jing, also known as The Classic of Mountains and Seas, is said to be at least 2, 200 years old. It is about culture and geography of China before the Qin Dynasty. The book has eighteen parts, talking about more than 550 mountains and 300 seas.
A famous story in the book is about Zhu Rong, the god of fire. He has a beast-like (野兽般的）body and a human face, riding around the sky on two dragons. He had a big fight with Gong Gong, the god of water, and won. But after the fight, the human world came into complete darkness. Then he brought fire to the world and taught humans how to use it.
Although it’s not clear who wrote it, Shan Hai Jing is an important ancient book and it is considered as one of the treasures of Chinese culture. People of all ages love the stories in the book. There are also many films, games and artworks made from it.

The 2018 Boston Marathon race (马拉松比赛) was held on Monday, April 16. It was cold and rainy. The wind was strong. It was hard to run.
Desiree Linden almost gave up early in the race. A marathon is just over 26 miles long. “At 6 miles I was thinking, No way, this is not my day,” Linden said. Linden ended up winning the race. She finished four minutes faster than Sarah Sellers. Sellers came in second. Linden’s winning time was slow for a winner. It was the slowest winning time for a woman since 1978.
Linden is the first U. S. woman to win in more than 30 years. Lisa Larsen Weidenbach was the last U.S. woman to win in 1985. Since then, the race started offering prize money. Great runners started competing from around the world.
YukiKawauchi is a runner from Japan. He won on the men’s side. His winning time was the slowest in more than 40 years. Many runners complained about the weather. Runners wore hats and extra clothing. The strong wind made the rain fall sideways. McFadden said she wore two jackets. She also wore gloves. The wet roads made it dangerous to turn and stop. “I couldn’t even see because the wind was so strong.” she said.
Linden almost won the race in 2011. She was passed near the finish line. This year, she came to the end with a big lead. Sellers came in second place. She is a nurse. She had to train before and after work. Sellers could not believe she passed such great runners.
This year, a total of seven Americans finished in the women’s top 10. For the second straight year, there were six Americans in the men’s top 10. Runners from East Africa usually do well at professional races. However, they did not do well at this year’s Boston Marathon.

Otters（水獭）are cute water animals. These days, keeping otters as pets is getting popular. In Japan, some “otter cafés（咖啡馆）”are open for business. People can pay to play with the otters there and to take photos with them. In Indonesia, people go swimming with their pet otters and take funny videos. These photos and videos posted online have interested more people to buy otters as pets. However, these enjoyable photos and videos hide the damage（损害）that the online trade is doing to otters.
