Body language is the most powerful language of all! It is said that our body movements communicate about 50 percent of what we really mean. And words only express 7 percent. Though your mouth is closed, your body is just saying.
Arms. How you hold your arms shows how you are. If you keep your arms to the sides of your body or behind your back, it shows you are not afraid. Head. When you want to appear confident, keep your head up. If you are a monitor in class, you can also keep your head up when you want your words to be taken seriously.
Legs. Your legs are likely to move around a lot more than usual when you are nervous or telling lies. If you are at interviews, try to keep them still!
Posture(姿势). A good posture makes you feel better about yourself. If you are feeling down, you usually don't sit straight, but sit with your shoulders inward(向内的). This makes breathing more difficult, which can make you feel nervous or uncomfortable.
Mouth. When you are thinking, you often purse your lips(噘嘴). You might also use this body movement hold back an angry opinion that you don't wish to show. However, it will probably still be noticed, and people know you're not happy.

Everybody has a brain, but not many people know how the brain works. Some people believe that the brain is like the hard disk of a computer. We use it to store files—pictures, words, text, sounds and so on. Others compare the brain to a huge cupboard with lots of shelves and boxes in it. We put information into these boxes and hope to find it again later. However, the brain is not a computer disk, and it is not a cupboard, either.
Look at the picture here. It looks a bit like weeds (杂草) in a garden, doesn't it The picture actually shows a child's neocortex一a part of the brain that controls sight and hearing. You can guess what happens—more “weeds" grow as the child gets older. Scientists call these neuronal networks (神经网络). The networks grow around our neurons. What makes them grow Learning! "Leaning causes brain change, " says Professor James Zull from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. " Without learning, nothing changes in the brain. For every new word you learn in your English lesson, every problem you solve in maths, and every new song you learn to sing, a neuronal network grows in your brain and the brain changes. '
The more neuronal networks we have, the better we can think and the better we can remember tings. You may wonder if there is anything you can do to make the networks in your brain grow better. Professor Zull says, "Yes there is" He says that brain change is the strongest when you are interested in and like what you are learning. You are in control of what you learn and you get a challenging task that makes you feel good and develops your brain. So you can become cleverer as you learn more.

The Caofeidian Wetland, which lies in Tangshan, Hebei Province, is an important place for migratory(迁徙的) birds. It was reported in the newspaper on November 9, 2020 that more than2, 000 oriental white storks(东方白鹳), a rare kind of migratory bird, were found there.
In order to watch oriental white storks, I went to the Caofeidian Wetland on November 10, 2020. Luckily, as soon as I got there, I noticed a large number of them looking for food in the swamps(沼泽). I couldn't get close, so I used a pair of binoculars to see them more clearly.
They were about 1.2 metres tall with long hard black beaks(喙) and broad wings. They had long red legs and a long thin neck. Their bodies were covered with white feathers, while their wings were grey and black. They looked so beautiful that I couldn't help taking many photos of them. The oriental white storks used to be common in East Asia several hundred years ago. They lived in wetlands and fed mainly on small fish. In winter, they flew to the wetlands along the Changjiang River in China.
However, as the human population grew larger and larger, the space for them became less and less. They couldn't find enough food to eat. Worse still, some people killed them illegally(非法地). As a result, their population has become very small. At present, there are only about 9, 000 oriental white storks in the world. They are in great danger.

At the far end of Islington Road in Newton, Massachusetts lives a little girl who is close to the neighbourhood. Two-year-old Annie is deaf, but she loves to communicate with anyone who knows sign language.
"She's super active. She wants to talk with any body, "said her father, Raphael. "Her character changes when there is someone who can communicate with her," said her mother, Glenda.
To communicate with the deaf girl is not something easy. However, the whole community learns sign language just for the little girl. On their own, Annie 's neighbours got together, found an instructor, and are now fully immersed (专心于) in an American Sign Language class. The teacher, Rhys McGovern, says this is unbelievable because a lot of times even the parents of deaf children won't learn sign language. "But here Annie has a full community that's signing and communicating with her, "Rhys said.
Annie's parents say there aren't words in any language to express their thanks. "It's really shocking and beautiful. We are so lucky, "Glenda said. In fact, they said they already saw a difference in their daughter. "The first thing she says to us is 'friend'. We are all moved by her," said one neighbour.

Michelle is sixty years old now. She hopes to calculate her body age to learn if she is living a healthy life. Here are her ways to calculate her body age:
Find resting pulse rate(静息脉率)
A healthy heart usually beats between 60 and 100times per minute. A lower pulse rate shows that our hearts are strong. Higher pulse rates mean that our hearts have to work harder to do the same amount of work--they are weaker.
She adds one year to her chronological age(实际年龄)because her resting pulse rate is more than 100 beats per minute.
Calculate sleep
Our body needs sleep. People usually need to sleep between 7 and 8 hours per night. Getting less than that can make us tired and older.
Michelle will subtract(减去)six months from her age if she often gets 7-9hours of sleep. If she gets 5-6 hours of sleep or sleeps more than 9 hours, she will ad one year to her age. If she gets less than 5 hours of sleep, it means her body age will be even older.

It seems that Americans are more willing to help strangers than Chinese.
Once I walked on the street and tried to find my way to my hotel. I found that I was lost. So I stopped, took my map out and began searching for the right way. Then a lady came to me with a friendly smile. I wondered if I was in her way. Before I was about to stand aside (到旁边), the lady asked, "Do you need any help I can show you the way." I was very surprised. In China, most people won't give you a hand unless you ask. I said yes to her. She carefully gave the directions to me. I was touched by her selfless behaviour and warm attitude (态度).
After experiencing many such things in the USA, I thought about the situation in China. My teacher in China told me that several years ago he travelled to another city by himself. After a whole day's hard work at a factory, he bought a pancake at a stall (货摊). But he later found that it was bad. The seller cheated (欺骗) him. Since then, he always checks the food he buys on the street. Even today we often see news that shows we don't trust strangers.
Chinese people are more vigilant to strangers because they are afraid to get hurt. But many American people believe that if you love others first, you will be loved. I think we should learn from this attitude and rebuild the trust among people.

It is better to telephone before visiting someone at home. If you receive a written invitation to an event that says "RSVP", you should reply to let the person who sent the invitation know whether or not you plan to go.
You should never accept an invitation unless you really plan to go. You may refuse by saying "Thank you for inviting me, but I will not be able to come.". If, after accepting, you are unable to go, be sure to tell those who are expecting you as soon as possible that you will not be there. Although it is not necessarily expected that you give a gift to your host, it is considered polite to do so, especially if you have been invited for a meal. Chocolate, or a small gift is all appropriate (合适的). A thank-you note or a telephone call after the visit is also considered polite and is an appropriate way to express your appreciation for the invitation.

A poor farmer had a friend who was famous for the wonderful apples he grew.
One day, his friend gave the farmer a young apple tree and told him to take it home and plant it. The farmer was pleased with the gift, but when he got home, he did not know where to plant it.
He was afraid that if he planted the tree near the road, strangers would steal the fruit. If he planted the tree in one of his fields, his neighbors would come at night and steal some of the apples. If he planted the tree near his house, his children would take the fruit.
Finally he planted the tree in his woods where no one could see it. But without sunlight and good soil, the tree soon died.
