Harvard undergraduates have the opportunity to study and practice the performing arts through the recently launched Theater, Dance &. Media concentration; to benefit from the work of the American Repertory Theater — a world-class professional company in residence; and to create theater outside of the curriculum through more than a dozen student theatre organizations as well as projects initiated by individual students.
Outside of productions presented by TDM and A. R. T., the majority of the many productions staged each year are produced, directed, designed, acted and run by students with support from the Office for the Arts and a variety of student-led theater groups.
Welcome, Harvard Class of 2026!
The First-Year Arts Program, produced by the Office for the Arts with the dean of Students Office, covers seven artistic disciplines, consisting of Creative Writing, Dance, Drama, Film, Music, Studio Arts, and Theater Design. This year’s program takes place between August 19-25 and we couldn’t be more excited about the line-up.

Charlotte Bront ’s father was a rural clergyman. She lost her mother when she was five. Bront ’s two older sisters died of an illness. Bront had an active imaginative life, writing stories of a fantastic world called Angria. Her first novel — Jane Eyre — was immediately and widely popular, and brought her into London literary circles. After losing all of her siblings (兄弟姐妹) to illness, Bront married a clergyman she respected, but did not love. She died at 38 of complications (并发症) of her pregnancy.
The Victorian period brought sweeping changes across British society, and writers like Bront explored its crises and progress. Abroad, the British expanded into a global empire that brought wealth from colonies. With the Industrial Revolution at home, manufacturing became Britain’s economic backbone. As the middle class found profitable opportunities, a new laboring class struggled for wages, job security, and adequate working and living conditions. Jane Eyre includes themes of reforms that emerged from the crisis: better political representation, working conditions, and education. Few of these reforms came immediately for women, who had limited status in Vietorian society. As Jane strives for economic and personal independence, she touches on the issues of class, economics, and gender roles that affected Victorian Britain at large.
The most popular literary form in the Victorian period was the novel, and Jane Eyre illustrates many of its defining characteristics: social relevance, plain style, and the narrative of an individual’s inner thoughts. Jane Eyre bears earlier Gothic features, with its mysteries, supernatural events, and picturesque scenery. Jane Eyre is a coming-of-age story, in which the protagonist’s (主角的) ambitions are set against the pressures and expectations of society. Victorian novels with similar styles and goals include Charles Dickens’ semi-autobiographical story, David Copperfeld (1849-1850), and Elizabeth Gaskell’s Mary Barton (1848) and North and South (1855).
The Bront s became a literary powerhouse when Charlotte, Emily, and Anne all wrote successful first novels. Each sister published under a masculine-sounding pseudonym (假名) based on their initials. Charlotte Bront became “Currer Bell”; Emily Bront wrote Wuthering Height (1845-1846) as “Ellis Bell”, and Anne Bront published Agnes Gray (1847) as “Acton Bell”.
4. What can we learn about Charlotte Bront based on Paragraph 1
A. She created a fantasy world named Angria after writing Jane Eyre.
B. She entered London literary circles due to the success of her book.
C. She was survived by her siblings who carried on with her career.
D. She passed away peacefully in her old age surrounded by family.
5. Why was Charlotte Bront ’s novel Jane Eyre widely popular
A. It was her first attempt at writing.
B. It was supported by famous literary figures.
C. It was written based on her own life.
D. It was about important social issues of her time.
6. Which literary characteristic of Jane Eyre fits with the Victorian novel tradition
A. A focus on the protagonist’s inner thoughts and social relevance.
B. A narrative style that avoids addressing class and gender issues.
C. A rejection of Gothic elements and mysterious stories.
D. An emphasis on fantastic worlds unrelated to reality.
7. What does the underlined word in Paragraph 4 most nearly mean
A A group of people with minimal influence.
B. A powerful and influential force in literature.
C. A single writer who gained fame and strength.
D. A group of writers only focusing on social issues.

In my last recent job, I taught academic writing to doctoral students at a technical college. My graduate students, many of whom were computer scientists, understood the mechanisms of generative AI better than I do. They recognized large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT as unreliable research tools. They knew that models are trained on existing data and therefore cannot produce novel research. However, that knowledge did not stop my students from relying heavily on generative AI. Several students admitted to drafting their research in note form and asking ChatGPT to write their articles.
As an experienced teacher, I reminded students that ChatGPT may change the meaning of a text when asked to revise, that it can produce biased and inaccurate information, that it does not generate stylistically strong writing and, for those grade-oriented students, that it does not result in A-level work. It did not matter. The students still used it.
Students who outsource their writing to AI lose an opportunity to think more deeply about their research. Using ChatGPT to complete assignments is bringing a forklift (叉车) into the weight room.
Generative AI is, in some ways, a democratizing (民主化的) tool. Many of my students were non-native speakers of English. Their writing frequently contained grammatical errors. Generative AI is effective at correcting grammar. However, the technology often changes vocabulary and changes meaning even when the only prompt is “fix the grammar.” As a result, I found myself spending many hours grading writing that I knew was generated by AI. That is, I found myself spending more time giving feedback to AI than to my students. So I quit.
The best educators will adapt to AI. Teachers will find ways to encourage students to think critically and know what is writing. However, those lessons require that students be willing to leave their comfort zone. Students must learn to move forward with faith in their own cognitive abilities as they write and revise their way into clarity. With few exceptions, my students were not willing to enter those uncomfortable spaces or remain there long enough to discover the power of writing.
8. What’s the problem with the writer’s students
A. Unfamiliarity with LLMs.
B. Heavy dependence on ChatGPT.
C. Failure to use existing novel research.
D. Unawareness of the technology drawbacks.
9. What does the underlined sentence mean
A. The students should refuse to use ChatGPT.
B. The students can use a forklift to improve their writing.
C. The students balance the development of body and mind.
D. The students will never improve their cognitive fitness that way.
10. What do we know about the author’s experience with grading AI-generated writing
A. The author enjoyed it as it was error-free.
B. The author found it a quick and easy task.
C. The author spent more time responding to AI.
D. The author preferred it over students’ original work.
11. What is a best solution according to the writer
A. Students learn to push through the discomfort.
B. Educators find ways to adapt to the technology.
C. Teachers move away from mechanical activities.
D. Students regain their faith in the technology change.
D
Seed libraries emerged as a revolutionary concept nearly a generation ago. The earliest example is BASIL, the Bay Area Seed Interchange Library. In 2000, University of CaliforniaBerkeley closed its campus farm to make room for research into genetically modified corn. This left the farm's collection of seeds homeless. Activists persuaded the Berkeley EcologyCenter to sponsor a lending library that would make the seeds available to local gardeners, who in turn would harvest and return seeds from the crops they grew to make possible the next year’s distribution.
From there, the seed library concept took off, spreading throughout all 50 states. Not only do seed libraries offer customers a free start in gardening, they can also make available seeds adapted to local growing conditions. Garden retailers (零售商) tend to stock nationally distributed lines of best-selling seeds that are chosen for their ability to grow over a broad area. A seed library, which isn’t driven by the need for profit, can focus on what performs best in the local soils and climate.
Besides distributing seeds, seed libraries also encourage seed saving among their customers, so that the loans can be repaid at the end of the growing season. This is why the vegetable, fruit and flower varieties that seed libraries distribute are typically open pollinated(授粉). That is, when pollinated naturally by insects, birds, or wind, the plants bear seeds that produce a new generation closely resembling the parents. Hybrids, the mainstay of conventional seed producers, do not “come true” in this fashion, and so they’re avoided by most seed libraries.
This has a couple of significant impacts. First, seed libraries tend to emphasize old-fashioned, heirloom (原种) plant varieties that originated before the modern emphasis on hybrid fruits and vegetables. In this way, seed libraries play a significant part in helping to keep such heirlooms available to gardeners. Then, because gardeners typically save seed from the stronger and more fruitful samples, they tend to preserve and reproduce the best adapted individuals. This practice encourages the gradual evolution of an ever-more locally adapted species. In this way, seed libraries are becoming ever more relevant to the needs of gardeners.
12. What distinguishes seed libraries from garden retailers
A. They focus on locally adapted seeds. B. They offer seeds at a lower price.
C. They prioritize profit over sustainability. D. They distribute best-selling seeds.
13. What is stressed about open-pollinated plants in paragraph 3
A. Their high output. B. Their distinct appearance.
C. Their rich varieties. D. Their biological advantages.
14. What is one important role of seed libraries
A. Promoting the study of hybrid fruits and vegetables.
B Ensuring the availability of heirloom plant varieties.
C. Making efforts to develop entirely new plant species.
D. Encouraging gardeners to change traditional methods.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Gardeners Starve for Best Seeds B. The Rise and Fall of Seed Libraries
C. Seed Libraries Help Gardening Grow D. The Future of Hybrid-plant Gardening

Many adults are proud to share their fascinations with what others would label as kids’ toys. Mini Brand mystery packs or other blind boxes have become a phenomenon as collectibles for some adults. ____16____ For others, Legos are on their wishlist encouraged by the brand’s growing number of grown-up sets.
____17____ Seeking and sparking child-like joy may be part of the appeal, said behavioral therapist Maddy Ellberger. “When something reminds us of a positive memory, we are likely to engage with it because the association relives memories.”
____18____ Clothing brands are also cashing in on nostalgia (怀旧情怀) from Crocs creating a Lizzie McGure clog to Lululemon’s Disney collection making a full comeback that includes adults. Barbie isn’t just for kids’ clothes now either, thanks to the recent film and “Barbie-core” fashion trend.
In addition to the trendy appeal, the new-found love for these items also speaks to a desire for connection in an increasingly divided world. But whether that desire for connection is satisfied depends on if you can translate the excitement into real, in-person connection. ____19____ But having or wearing the same thing is not the actual steps of forming shared identity. “And I feel like it’s not one that’s going to last,” Ellberger said.
Ellberger has a great idea for this. “You are into a certain trend, like toys. There’s a good chance you’ll find others who are into the same trend. ____20____ If it was part of a person’s screen saver, Santa or white elephant, that’s a really cute way of connecting over this,” she said.
A. The craze goes beyond toys.
B. So, what’s with the fascination
C. It’s a great way to form community.
D. Then give these toys to them as holiday gifts.
E. Social media fuels the trend by creating shared experiences.
F. Even stuffed animals are making their way into adults’ collections.
G. Childhood favorites have instead become relevant to adults again.

Firstly, music classes provide a much-needed mental break. They help us to relax and recharge, which, in turn, promotes focus and productivity when we return to our academic assignments. Secondly, music classes foster our creativity and emotional well-being, balancing the logical focus of subjects like math. This balance contributes to our intellectual and emotional growth.
In conclusion, music classes are not a distraction but a vital part of education. They benefit our mental health, contributing to an all-round development of education.
Possible version 2 (120 words):
Should Music Classes Be Offered to Senior 3 Students
As a Senior 3 student, I believe that while music classes are enjoyable, they’re not essential during this critical year. Our top priority should be academic success, as it directly affects our future.
Firstly Senior 3 is an extremely demanding year when every minute counts. Time should be spent on core subjects like science and language to maximize learning outcomes. Music classes take up our valuable time that could be better spent on revision or practice tests. Secondly, while music classes can help us relax, other effective stress-relief methods, like short breaks or physical exercise, provide similar benefits without compromising our study time.
In conclusion, I think music classes shouldn’t be offered to us. Instead, we should prioritize academic excellence.

The coach approached, placing a hand on my shoulder. “Second place is still a victory,” he said. I stared at the empty hook on my wall, imagining the medal that wouldn’t hang there. Dad stood silently nearby, his eyes filled with pride mixed with concern.
Suddenly, strong hands lifted me onto Dad’s shoulders. “Look around, champ,” he said. The crowd was cheering wildly — not just for Justin, but for every runner. “Winning isn’t about medals,” Dad continued. “It’s about pushing your limits.” From that height, I saw Sarah hugging her mom and Mikey laughing with friends. Justin waved at me, his medal glinting. I took a deep breath and clapped along with the crowd. Later, as we ate ice cream, Mom said, “Next year, that hook will be ready again.” I nodded, realizing the race had taught me something brighter than a ribbon.
