Fireworks cause air pollution
In Southern California, New Year’s Eve fireworks caused problems,
making the air in Los Angeles unsafe to breathe.
Fireworks make the air dirty and are bad for health and the natural world.
Fireworks can also cause fires. Some areas, like the San Gabriel Mountains, are
very dry and windy, which means fires can spread quickly.
Local authorities (地方当局) ask people not to use fireworks or anything
that can make a fire. If someone has illegal (非法的) fireworks, they could get
a fine or go to jail (监狱).

Students create a mini forest
In the US, a group of students at a school near Portland, Oregon, are
creating a “tiny forest” using something called the Miyawaki Method. They
have planted 600 plants and trees in an area as small as a tennis court. The
method is named after a Japanese botanist (植物学家), Akira Miyawaki. The
idea for the tiny forest started when their social studies teacher, Mr Walsh,
learned about it on a BBC Radio program in 2021. Now, after almost four
years, the trees have grown to almost 20 feet tall.
The students who helped plant the forest hope it will inspire future
students. They want to teach others about connecting with nature and
encourage action to fight climate change.
New freedom for Mickey Mouse
Artists and writers can now use Mickey and Minnie Mouse freely. This
change comes after 96 years.
Disney cannot object (反对) to this, but there are some rules. This change
is for the old versions (版本) of Mickey, like the black-and-white Mickey from
Steamboat Willie.
Disney still controls the later versions of Mickey, like Sorcerer Mickey
from Fantasia. Also, Disney has a special mark on Mickey, so nobody else can
use it like they do. You cannot use Mickey Mouse as a mascot (吉祥物). But if
you want to make your own Steamboat Willie, go ahead and be creative!

Do you still call other people on the phone these days Who do you call What do you talk about on the phone
Throughout my childhood, my mother had a special routine in the evenings. Sometimes she would knit (编织)
hats for us, and other times, she baked cookies. But one day, she surprised us all by announcing, “I’m going to call
one neighbor every night.” I was 16 then and couldn’t understand why she would spend her evenings talking to
people she barely (几乎不) knew.
One evening, I overheard her conversation with an elderly lady. She asked about the lady’ s dinner and even
discussed the blooming (盛开的) roses in the park. When she hung up, I questioned her choice of topics, finding
them trivial (琐碎的). With a kind smile, she explained,” I might be the only person she talked to today. So even
the simplest conversations can make her feel cared for.”
It wasn’t until nearly 30 years later that I realized the true impact of my mother’s nightly calls.
The elderly often feel lonely for different reasons. As people get older, they may experience the loss of friends
and family members. This leads to a smaller social circle. Health problems can make it harder for the elderly to join
in social activities. Retirement (退休) can also take away daily interactions that were once provided by work.
The lonely feeling can be very strong for the elderly. They might feel like they are being forgotten or no
longer valued. Without regular social interactions, they may experience sadness, boredom and a sense of emptiness
(空虚感). Long periods of feeling lonely can even lead to feelings of depression (抑郁) and anxiety (焦虑).
第 5页/共 15页
My mother’s conversations were more than just friendly talks—they were lifelines (生命线) for lonely seniors
(老年人). Her calls connected them to the world outside. Her determination (决心) and social skills in keeping
these connections were more than I could understand, and I wish I could do better.

For more than a month, the world has been very excited about a new AI model called DeepSeek-R1. The
company behind it, also called DeepSeek, is a business based in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province.
The new AI first appeared on Jan. 20th. In just one week, it beat OpenAI’s ChatGPT and became number one
free application (应用) in the App Store. What is so special about it
“According to DeepSeek, the new AI model is as good at difficult activities like math as other first-rate (一流
的) models. But it needs much less computing power to do that. It is also the cheapest of its kind and took only
about 5.57 million dollars to make. That is far less than the hundreds of millions or even billions that US businesses
第 6页/共 15页
have to spend on making similar AI models,” said Marc Andreessen, a technology expert in the US.
The achievement was largely due to an idea the scientist had while they trained it. Instead of using the
traditional ways, DeepSeek mainly uses Reinforcement Learning (RL,强化学习) . It helps AI learn by working out
the right way to do things on its own to get points. This makes R1better at reasoning and solving hard problems.
What’s more, DeepSeek-R1 is open-source (开放源代码的) . Everyone is free to get a copy of its code (代码) .
They can also change the code to meet their own needs. “Being open-source is very important for sharing
knowledge and making technology better for everyone”, said Liang Wenfeng, who set up DeepSeek.

Reading paper books or e-books
Some people prefer reading paper books. Others enjoy reading e-books. As for me, I have a strong preference
for reading paper books.
Firstly, when I hold a paper book, I can truly enjoy the feeling of paper. The paper under my fingers makes the
reading experience more excited and real. Moreover, reading printed books causes no eye strain. After a long-time
study, it’s a great relief for my eyes.
What’s more, there’s a special meaning in collecting physical books. My small bookshelf is filled with all
kinds of books I’ve read, and each one reminds me of the wonderful time I spent with it.
All in all, reading paper books is a pleasure that e-books can hardly match.
