When you go on a trip, who watches your pet In the past, most people would ask their friends to take care of their pets. But now, you can also pay for in-home pet-sitting services. People who offer this kind of service are known as “pet sitters”.
Cao Ting, 27, is a pet sitter from Chengdu, who has been working in the pet industry for two years. “I offer services like feeding, bathing, walking dogs, playing with the pets, and other things as requested by the owners, ” said Cao.
Cao normally needs to take care of a pet for 40 minutes to an hour for one pet-sitting period. The cost of her service is related to many things such as the kind of pet, distance traveled and lasting time of care. Generally, it is from 50 to 70 yuan per session. Pet owners can contact Cao through pet care websites and different social medias, like Xiaohongshu, Xianyu and Douyin.
Cao acquires professional pet care skills through various methods, including attending online or offline pet care training courses, learning from other pet sitters and getting experience through practice. While caring for pets, Cao realized how unique each pet is and how important it is to deeply understand the pets' behaviors to develop safe, comfortable relationships with them.
But being a pet-sitter isn't always easy. In-home pet care means pet sitters will enter other people's houses when they are away, which may raise worries about property security. “Before starting the pet-sitting, I will ask the owner to lock away their valuable things and even set up cameras for further security, ” said Cao. In addition, pet sitters usually put their personal information on websites and social medias in order to deal with some disputes directly.
The income of pet sitters is still relatively unstable, and most pet sitters take this work as a part-time job. However, Cao remains hopeful about the future pet-sitting market. “People are starting to care more about their pets’ health and happiness. There will be lots of new opportunities in the pet industry, ” said Cao.
24. What does the passage tell us about Cao Ting

A. By studying courses at university. B. By communicating with pet ownersand pet sitters.
C. By working at local animal shelters. D. By attending professional training and working.
26. What does paragraph 5 focus on regarding pet sitters
A. Platforms that help pet sitters to resolve arguments.
B. Methods to solve property security and other disputes.
C. Benefits which pet-sitting brings about to the pet owners.
D. Solutions to deal with the costly pet-sitting services.
27. What is Cao's attitude towards the future of pet-sitting
A. Disapproving. B. Doubtful. C. Optimistic. D. Indifferent.

Marine (海洋的) laboratories were designed to be against extreme weather. But they might be defeated by climate change. The water is coming.
Education centers and marine laboratories in America are preparing for rising seas and the changing climate. The impact of climate change is slower but fiercer than any storm, and will finally do more damage. It threatens researchers’ ability to study marine environments up close at a time when it’s more vital than ever to understand them.
Fox Island Environmental Education Center, a Virginia institution that has opened up the wonders of the natural world to young people for more than 40 years, has shut down. And what is lost is not just a building, but inspiration. A number of the young people who stayed on Fox Island and gained a love of nature and the environment have gone on to be scientists. One, Kenneth M. Halanych, professor of biological sciences at Auburn University, now researches topics including climate change and shifts in the ranges of marine species. “If I hadn’t had those growing experiences in the Bay, I might have ended up doing something totally different, ” he said.
Along with its function as a scientific research facility, the Louisiana University Marine Consortium (联盟) is also a center for environmental education with visits from some 5, 000 students each year. “If our parking lot is flooding when a group is here, we definitely explain to them why we’re flooding.” That example, Murt Conover, associate director of education and outreach (外联) , said, “gives the idea of what our coastal labs are dealing with.”
Brian Roberts, associate director of science at the consortium, sees climate change as a challenge, but also a scientific opportunity. He said, “There are so many opportunities you lose if we just pack up and leave. ” Decades of measurements from the site would be interrupted by a move, he noted. And, researchers say, academic budgets might not allow replacements to be built.
28. What can be learned from paragraph 3
A. Fox Island has a large population of ocean lives.
B. Some marine creatures are in danger of extinction.
C. Changing climate affects human being’s lifestyles.
D. Education centers inspire local people in some ways.
29. Why does the author mention Murt Conover’s words
A. To call on more local people to protect the marine environment.
B To prove the researchers welcome visitors to the local coastal lab.
C. To show the problems studied in the lab have educational value.
D. To display the background of the local coastal lab’s research.
30. What would be affected by building replacements according to Brian Roberts
A. The subjects of scientific research. B. Ways of dealing with climate change.
C. Longtime on-site measurements. D. The equipment of the experiments.
31. What may be the best title for the text
A. Mother Nature Is Striking Back Now. B. Climate Change Threatens Marine Labs.
C. Nature: The Most Beautiful Classroom. D. The Louisiana Center: A Lost Laboratory.

A recent study from the Research Institute at McGill University Health Center may improve the treatment of sleep disorders and neurological (神经系统的) conditions.
Scientists have made a significant advancement in comprehending sleep mechanisms, identifying the melatonin (褪黑素) receptor MTl as a key regulator of REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep. This discovery holds promise for new treatments for sleep disorders and related neuropsychiatric conditions.
REM sleep is crucial for dreaming, memory consolidation, and emotional regulation. In the brain, the melatonin MT1 receptor affects a type of neuron (神经元) that synthesizes (合成) the neurotransmitter and hormone (荷尔蒙) noradrenaline (降肾上腺素) , found in an area known as the Locus Coeruleus, or “blue spot” in Latin. During REM sleep, these neurons quiet down and stop their activity. Serious conditions such as Parkinson's disease and Lewy body dementia (痴呆) — which currently lack effective treatments — are linked to disruptions in REM sleep.
“This discovery not only advances our understanding of sleep mechanisms but also holds significant clinical potential, ” said Gabriella Gobbi, principal investigator of a new study published in the Journal of Neuroscience.
Until now, the specific receptor (受体) touching off REM sleep had escaped scientists. The new study has identified the melatonin MTl receptor as an important regulator of this sleep stage. Using a novel drug targeting MTl receptors, researchers successfully enhanced REM sleep duration in experimental animals, while simultaneously reducing neuronal activity.
“Currently, there are no drugs specifically targeting REM sleep. Most hypnotic (安眠) drugs on the market, while extending total sleep duration, tend to adversely affect REM sleep,” said Dr. Stefano Comai, co-senior author of the study and Professor at the University of Padua and Adjunct Professor at McGill University.
Further research into the neurobiology and pharmacology (药理学) of REM sleep is crucial for developing targeted treatments that could improve the quality of life for patients affected by these diseases, according to the researchers. As scientists continue to explore the complexities of sleep regulation, the hope for effective interventions in neurological disorders grows increasingly promising.
32. What potential impact does the discovery of the MTI receptor have on patients with neurological conditions
A. It only improves physical recovery processes during the sleep treatment.
B. It may result in the development of a sleep-monitoring device and production.
C. It is likely to help comprehend Rapid Eye Movement sleep and neurological conditions.
D. It could lead to new treatments for sleep disorders and neuropsychiatric conditions.
33. Why is REM sleep considered very important for humans
A. It helps regulate body temperature and improves the quality of life for humans.
B. It repairs cognitive function and reduces many neuropsychiatric diseases.
C. It affects a kind of neuron which would synthesize the Locus Coeruleus.
D. It is vital for dreaming, memory consolidation, and emotional regulation.
34. During REM sleep, what happens to the neurons in the Locus Coeruleus that produce noradrenaline
A. They stop working and become very calm.
B. They become highly active and release melatonin.
C. They increase neurotransmitters for memory consolidation.
D. They stimulate emotional responses through melatonin.
35. What is the current status of drug treatments targeting REM sleep
A. REM sleep drugs have been banned. B. No drugs specifically target REM sleep.
C. There are many effective drugs available. D. All hypnotic drugs enhance REM sleep.

By the time Charlie Brown was in the sixth grade, he was the smallest and the youngest boy in his class. Being a good student didn’t last forever. Later, school was all but impossible for Charlie. He failed every subject in the eighth grade. By the time Charlie was in junior high, he began to have trouble. He flunked physics in high school, getting a grade of zero. By the tenth grade, Schulz said that he had “failed everything in sight. ”
Charlie also failed in Latin, algebra, and English. He didn’t do much better in sports. Although he did manage to make the school’s golf team, he promptly lost the only important match of the season. There was a consolation match but he lost that too.
Throughout his youth, Charlie was awkward, socially. He was not actually disliked by the other students and no one cared that much. He was astonished if a classmate ever said hello to him outside of school hours.
There is no way to tell how he might have done at dating. Charlie never asked a girl out in high school. He was too afraid of being turned down.
Charlie was a loser. He, his classmates... everyone knew it. So he went with it. Charlie had made up his mind early in life that if things were meant to work out they would. Otherwise, he would content himself with what appeared to be his inevitable mediocrity.
However, one thing was important to Charlie. That is drawing. He was proud of his artwork. In kindergarten, after seeing one of his drawings, the teacher said, “Someday, Charlie, you’re going to be an artist.” Of course, no one else appreciated it. In his senior year of high school, he handed in some cartoons to the editors of the yearbook. The cartoons were turned down. Despite this, Charlie was so convinced of his ability that he decided to become a professional artist.

【原文】W: According to a new study, technology is helping local communities to stop or significantly reduce the loss of trees in the rainforests of south America. This new research aimed to see if putting information directly into the hands of communities who live in the rain forests would make a difference. Environmental groups gave people living in the rain forests relevant equipment. This allowed them to inform authorities if they found areas where trees were illegally being taken down. In the first year of the project, they were able to reduce the loss of trees by half.
After forty years of investment in satellite technology by environmental campaigners in Brazil, Peru and Colombia, the majority of the rainforests are found. The campaigners behind the study identified 76 villages in Peru that were suitable and gave 36 of them access to the new technology. The other forty continued as normal to see if there was a significant difference. Three members from each community were selected to be trained in the technology.
And shown how to map the area and identify where trees were being taken down. Photos were taken and loaded onto computer drives when satellites detected possible loss of trees. 65.【答案】Dear Eric,
You wrote that your parents won’t listen when you tell them things. As a teenager of the same age, I understand how you feel. It is common for us to feel helpless when we find it difficult to communicate with our parents.
Firstly, I think you’d better try to listen to your parents. Maybe they aren’t listening to you because you don’t listen to them. Besides, it is a good idea to invite them out for dinner to eat. This will give you a chance to speak to them without distractions.
I hope you will find my ideas useful.
Best wishes,
Li Hua
