Morten Holm, a 56-year-old Danish architect, showcases the dynamic lifestyle, switching from architect to urban designer, and now operator of a nature school on a suburban farm. Yet, beneath these varied titles lies one goal: to create urban oases (绿洲) that harmonize city life with nature.
Holm’s first visit to China was a business trip in 2001, which sparked a curiosity that would change his life. “Every morning, I would sneak out to explore the city before the meetings,” he recalled. The busy streets, the bit chaotic yet lively hutongs, and the city’s transformation appealed to him.
Ten years later, Holm resolved to relocate to China, selling his share in his architectural firm and setting up a new partnership in China “to understand and learn from or even be part of the country’s rapid development”.
Archiland, the design company Holm partnered with, now operates across several Chinese cities, focusing on sustainable architecture and urban design. Among the projects he has undertaken in China, the renovation (翻新) of Beijing’s Liangma River stands out of the most impressive one to him.
For Holm, the renovation of the Liangma River was to create a “soft living space”, boosting local businesses and enhancing residents’ quality of life. “When urbanization reaches a certain level, it’s not just about quantity—more routes and housing—but about making life in the city more livable, increasing the quality of life, and making people happier,” he said.
But Holm’s vision extends beyond urban projects. In 2020, he and his wife transformed his in-laws’ orchard (果园) into an organic farm and green school called FunFarmFam, inspired by Denmark’s green education models. “The ‘Green School’ has become a beacon for urban families seeking a connection with nature,” he said.
Holm sees similarities between China and Denmark, noting a shared practical approach to development and the potential for cooperation. “The cooperation can be very fruitful in areas, including agriculture, green economy, and urban livability,” he said.
24. Why did Holm decide to move to China
A. He had sold his share in his company. B. He received a job offer from Archiland.
C. He wanted to engage in China’s development. D. He was struck by the charm of hutongs in Beijing.
25. What was the main goal of the Liangma River renovation project
A. To boost transport capacity. B. To extend business districts.
C. To promote the city’s livability. D. To construct more apartments.
26. What’s special about FunFarmFam
A. It has become a tourist attraction. B. It focuses on high-tech agriculture.
C. It is mainly intended for rural kids. D. It integrates farming with education.
27. What can be inferred about Holm according to the text
A. He prioritizes economic development.
B. He is indifferent to people’s quality of life.
C. He explores his cultural identity through traveling.
D. He advocates including nature in urban development.
C
Research in mice showed limited intakes of one particular essential amino acid (氨基酸) can slow the impacts of aging and even lengthen their lifespan. Scientists now wonder if these findings could help people improve their longevity and quality of life.
Isoleucine is one of three essential branched-chain amino acids necessary for our body to build proteins. Unlike some nutrients that the body can produce on its own, isoleucine must be obtained from sources like eggs, dairy, soy protein, and meats. But there can always be too much of a good thing. Earlier researches indicate that excessive intake may lead to health issues, particularly in individuals with higher body mass indexes (BMIs).
In the most recent study, a genetically diverse group of mice was fed either a diet containing 20 common amino acids as a control, where all amino acids were reduced by about two-thirds, or a diet where only isoleucine was reduced by the same amount. The mice, equivalent to 30-year-old humans, were allowed to eat as much as they wanted from their assigned diets.
The study found that restricting dietary isoleucine increased the lifespan of the mice, reduced weakness and obesity, and promoted glycemic (血糖的) control. Male mice experienced a 33% increase in lifespan compared to those whose isoleucine was not restricted, while females saw a 7% increase. These mice also scored better in 26 measures of health, including muscle strength, endurance, blood sugar levels, and hair loss.
Curiously, the mice given low isoleucine food also ate significantly more calories than the others. But rather than gaining weight, they actually burned more energy and maintained lower body weights, even though their activity levels were no different.
The researchers think restricting isoleucine in humans, either by diet or medicine, has the potential to yield similar anti-aging effects—although, as with all mice studies, we won’t know for sure until it’s actually tested in humans.
28. What is the function of isoleucine
A. It aids people in weight control. B. It absorbs amino acids for the body.
C. It assists people ease health troubles. D. It plays a crucial role in forming proteins.
29. What is the purpose of the most recent study
A. To reduce the calorie intake of the mice.
B. To assess the impact of isoleucine restriction.
C. To compare the effectts of different amino acids.
D. To study the relationship between diets and exercise.
30. What does the author imply in the last paragraph
A. Researchers should conduct more studies on mice.
B. People need to reduce calorie intake in daily diets.
C. Diverse anti-aging measures needs to be compared.
D. Human tests are likely to be carried out in the future.
31. What can be the best title for the passage
A. Amino Acids: Benefits to Body Function B. Isoleucine: Reduced Intake Extends Lifespan
C. Amino Acids: Risks from Over-consumption D. Isoleucine: Side Effects of Burning Calories
D
Human beings have a fundamental need to belong. Yet we are living in a time of loneliness and isolation. A lack of social connection can have negative consequences for both our mental and physical health. To encourage the feelings of connectedness, recent studies suggest that experiential purchases, such as travel, meals at restaurants and recreation, tend to bring people more happiness than material ones, and can promote a greater sense of social connection.
In a series of 13 experiments involving 1,980 participants, researchers asked people to think about either experiential or material purchases they had made and then rate their thoughts and feelings about those purchases. People reported feeling more connected with those who had made the same experiential purchase than those who had made the same material purchase. This reflects the fact that experiential purchases are more central to an individual’s identity.
Moreover, these findings apply even when people think about how their experiences differ. Even in cases where participants were asked to consider a situation in which they met someone making a similar but better experiential or material purchase, experiences were more likely to foster connection between people than material items were. Although the unpleasant social comparison can create a sense of social distance, this distance feels less wide when it comes to experiential purchases. That’s because it’s easier for people to find common ground and feel kinship with someone else over their similar experiences.
Finally, after people think about a joyous experience, they express a greater desire to engage in social activities than they do after they reflect on an important possession. As experiences bond us with others, they provide memories of such bond that people can revisit. These memories, in turn, can encourage engagement in even more sociality.
One clear takeaway from this research is that people would likely be wise to shift their spending habit from “having” to “doing”. Also, the research hints that directing resources toward more community engagement might drive improvements in societal well-being.
32. Which can be an example of experiential purchases
A. Watching a paid magic show. B. Claiming free food samples.
C. Reading fictions in a library. D. Purchasing a trendy T-shirt.
33. What does the underlined word “kinship” in paragraph 3 mean
A. A shared family background. B. A sense of emotional closeness.
C. A tendency to be competitive. D. A desire to purchase the same things.
34. What can be learned about experiential purchases
A. They are better for mental development. B. They create unpleasant social comparisons.
C. They contribute to widening social distance. D. They encourage engagement in social events.
35. What are people advised to do according to the text
A. Reflecting on our consumption preference. B. Seting rules to limit unnecessary spending.
C. Encouraging community engagement. D. Exploiting more resources in community.

During adolescence, your body goes through many changes. 36 It is simply how you perceive, think and feel about yourself. You can develop either a positive or negative body image, depending on your mindset. It is influenced by factors such as peer pressure, media and culture, which can lead to negative feelings if you don’t meet those expectations.
A negative body image may result in unhealthy behaviors—extreme dieting, overeating, overexercise, social withdrawal, and more. 37 What’s more, you may fail to appreciate other positive aspects such as your talents and personality.
Here are some tips for you to develop a positive body image.
First, acknowledge that we are all unique individuals. If everyone looked the same, the world would be a boring place. 38 Beauty standards keep changing constantly, and the “ideal” images of models or celebrities in media are often crafted through makeup, strategic angles, specific lighting, and digital editing like Photoshop.
39 Avoid passing comments about people’s outer image, and you will then stop criticizing yourself too. If you have peers who constantly comment about your look, consider whether they’re the right company for you.
Ultimately, remember that your body image is simply YOUR perception of your body. This means you have the power to change this, even if you do not have the ability to change the perception of others. 40
A. You start forming an image of your body.
B. Actually, there is no such thing as a perfect body.
C. It is your choice; do not let others decide for you.
D. The changes make you mature physically and mentally.
E. Besides, comment with kindness rather than judgment.
F. It also decreases the overall satisfaction you have in life.
G. Also, instead of appearances, value people for who they really are.

I had to go to Lawnrest Nursing Home alone that afternoon. “That moustache,” my mother shook her head, “A seventeen-year-old is too young for that, Mike.” I shrugged, thinking it made me look more mature.
My grandmother, 73, once full of life, now suffered from memory loss. My mother visited her often, but she was not available that day. Though I wasn’t fond of nursing homes, I agreed to go that day—I hadn’t seen my grandmother since she went there.
When I found her, her eyes lit up. With the help of the electric bed, she sat up. “Mike, I didn’t think you’d come,” she said warmly. I sighed in relief. My mother had warned me that she might not recognize me. I held her hands gently—they felt fragile, the skin smooth as if time had worn away its roughness.
“You look so handsome. Is that a new coat ” she asked, gazing at me with such intensity that I felt uneasy. “I remember the black Chesterfield coat. It was hard times, but you could never resist something stylish.” I had never heard of a Chesterfield and my coat wasn’t black. But I stayed quiet. Be patient, my mother had said.
“You always said, ’It’s the things of the spirit that count.’ You even bought a grand piano during the Depression (大萧条),” she said, eyes closed, “I was never that fine a player, but you loved to sit there, listening to me play and sing.” She hummed a melody I didn’t recognize.
Then it hit me—my grandfather’s name was Mike. I had been named after him. He had died at thirty-five in an accident, four decades ago. From old photos, I knew he was tall and thin. Like me. And he wore a moustache.
“And I think of that terrible night, Mike. I made terrible accusations against you, about the piano, about the money, and about the ladies’ affectionate eyes on you… Our relationship was never the same after that night, was it, Mike ” Her eyes were brighter than ever, but the tears were gathering.

One possible version:
Dear Chris,
Hope this letter finds you well. I’m eager to share an exciting event with you—our class cooking competition held in the school canteen last Thursday.
I took part in it and chose to make a tomato-egg stir-fry. At first, I was a bit nervous. However, as I started cracking eggs and slicing tomatoes, I gradually calmed down. It was a great experience. I not only improved my cooking skills by gaining hands-on experience but also learned the importance of staying calm under pressure.
This competition made me realize that trying new things can bring unexpected joy. It also strengthened the bond among classmates. I’m really looking forward to more such activities.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
Paragraph 1:
“And then the accident… and I never had the chance to ask you to forgive me…” her voice trembled. My heart clenched. I wasn’t really him, but at that moment, I knew what I had to do. I leaned in closer and whispered, “It’s okay. I’ve always loved you, and I always will. I’m here, and I’m not going anywhere.” She closed her eyes tightly, a tear slipping down her cheek. “Thank you, Mike,” she murmured. Then, as if the dam finally broke, she buried her face into my shoulder and cried. Her sobs were full of regret, but also of relief. I held her gently, letting her cry it out. Gradually, her sobs softened and the room felt calm.
Paragraph 2:
I waited awhile until she seemed to be sleeping. Her breathing slowed, soft and steady. I gently placed her hand back onto the blanket and stood up quietly. Carefully, I lowered her bed. The light from the window fell across her face, peaceful now, as if some old burden had finally lifted. Walking in the hallway, I brushed my moustache and smiled—it became a bridge between past and present, between a grieving wife and a grandson who carried her love forward. I knew I’d return again soon—not out of duty, but from a deeper sense of connection.

Ministers are urging schools to put on special workshops for students aged 16—18 to ensure they feel comfortable with the preparation of leaving home. The course, designed by the university accommodation provider Unite Students, will teach students how to manage their finances and how to live independently. According to the course materials, teachers should ask students questions which may not have occurred to them, such as “What is the price of a litre of milk ” and “List 5 hot meals you can cook.” and “How often will you wash your sheets once you move out of home ”
Damian Hinds, the Education Secretary, said, “We are conscious that going to university is one of the most exciting things that happens in your life, but it can also be very challenging.” He said that an important part of education is preparing children for adulthood, so “it is right that we teach them what to expect for life after school”.
