Yang Xiuying, 76, sits at a wooden loom (织布机). As her fingers pass the shuttle back and forth through the cotton threads, the old machine comes to life. Ever since she was a young girl, Yang has been making indigo (靛蓝的) cloth. “You can never buy this type of handmade cloth at the market," she says.
For the Dong people (侗族) in Guizhou, it is a long tradition to make indigo cloth. The skill has been passed down from mother to daughter over generations. Nearly every family makes its own cloth.
This traditional skill, unfortunately, is now facing danger. Young people show little interest in it. Some of them have moved to big cities to find better jobs. Local officials are trying to change young people’s attitude. One program has set up several cloth-making factories in Guizhou. After learning how to make indigo cloth, young Dong people can now find jobs easily. They can also work closer to home.
Traditionally, the Dong people consider indigo cloth as important as rice. Many Dong women spend long hours making the cloth. They rise and start working very early in the morning. To make the cloth shiny, it must be rubbed and beaten hard. The noise of cloth being beaten often wakes the whole village up. The cloth has to be put in the dye (染料) over many times to get the rich color. The process of coloring usually takes two weeks.
Yang holds out her purple hands. “They say she who has the darkest indigo marks on her hands makes the best cloth,” the old lady says proudly.

Art has always been a reflection of human creativity and imagination. With the development of artificial intelligence (AI), the world of art is changing. AI painting is changing the way we create and appreciate art.
People use computer programs to create artwork online which is called AI painting. These programs are trained on large databases of existing artwork, sketches, and photographs.
One of the key advantages of AI painting is its ability to produce artwork at a much faster pace than a human artist. While it may take a human artist hours or even days to complete a painting, an AI can create a similar piece in just a few minutes. Another advantage of AI painting is its ability to create artwork that is difficult or impossible for humans to produce. For example, some programs can turn 2D images into 3D images. Additionally, AI can be used to create artwork that combines various styles, leading to special pieces that would be challenging for a human artist to create alone.
However, there are also worries about the influence of AI on the art world. Some people argue that AI artwork is short of the emotional depth of human-created art. They believe that art is not just about creating pleasing images but also about expressing human experiences and feelings. Others worry that the widespread use of AI in art could lead to the same styles.
In conclusion, AI painting is redefining the world of art. It is a good tool for artists to explore new ideas. As we continue to explore this exciting new trend, it will be fascinating to see how AI painting develops and shapes the future of art.

Stress (压力) This is the number-one reason for a jumping eye. It does harm to our eyes if it lasts for too long. When we’re under a lot of stress, the body gives out stress hormones (荷尔蒙) which leads to a “fight or flight” response (回应). Jenny finished playing the last few pieces of music and bowed to the animals on her bed. “I just hope I can play it well at the concert”. In just an hour she would be playing the violin onstage for the first time, and the thought made her nervous.
She looked around the room at the bear, lion, money and other animals that lined her bed and shelves. “I wish you could all come with me,” she sighed. She gave them one last look and went to join her parents in the car.
“Do I have to play in the concert ” asked Jenny as she climbed into the back seat.

Many people may throw away the pits inside fruits after eating them, but inheritors of nut carving (核雕继承人) have turned them into artworks instead.
Weifang nut carving can date back to the Qing Dynasty. During that time, an old imperial craftsman (皇家手艺人) Wang Dayan spread the skill to the local people in Shandong Province. Craftsmen back then often used peach pits (桃核) to show off their artistic skills. Because of the high level of carving skills needed, the traditional culture and its rich artistic theme, Weifang nut carving was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage (国家非物质文化遗产) in 2008.
“One nut, from 0.8 to 6 centimeters long, can be made into fan pendants (坠饰), earrings, buttons, seals and so on,” said Tan Wanhai, 48, an inheritor of Weifang nut carving. Tan has studied the art of nut carving for 25 years and has created many nut carvings.
However, the craftsman also said that bringing this kind of artwork to life is not easy. “Unlike some pits like olive pits which have a flat surface, each peach pit has its own special texture (质地) like human fingerprints,” Tan said, adding that, craftsmen have to study each peach pit to carefully plan out their artwork.
Nut carving craftsmen also need to have knowledge in many areas. According to Tan, they have to master skills in painting, seal carving and calligraphy (书法) from many traditional cultures.
Thanks to their creative design and fresh ideas, Weifang nut carving artworks have been increasingly welcomed by people in China. More people are learning the art and have even become inheritors to pass down the skill to young people.
“Now, the number of inheritors is about 1,000. But I believe it could be bigger. More craftsmen now give up the tradition of passing down the skill only through the family and open it up to anyone who is interested in learning the skill,” said Tan.

C.Peach pits are harder to carve due to their irregular shape.
D.Peach pits are only suitable for creating certain types of nut carving artworks.

How was your sleep last night World Sleep Day fell on March 17th this year. The topic was “sleep is important for health”. How can we have healthy sleep Take a look at some tips.
First, wake up naturally. Waking up to a ringing alarm is never fun. Studies showed that when you wake up because of a loud alarm, your breathing will go up from 16 to 24 breaths a minute. Your heart will have 10 more beats every minute. Your blood pressure (血压) will rise.
“This is a very unhappy way to start the day,” a sleep scientist said. You’ll feel worse if you lie down again to get a few more minutes of sleep. This will make your body even sleepier.
So what should we do to wake up naturally Try to use an alarm with softer and lower sounds, or leave a crack (缝隙) in the curtains--the rising sun will wake you up.
Second, sleep early, get up early. Some young people may go to bed late and get up late, such as sleeping from 2 a. m. to 10 a. m. They think as long as they have 8 hours of sleep, everything will be fine.
But in fact, our bodies can tell time. They use light and temperature to do so. If we wake up too late, our bodies might feel confused between sleep and being awake. Yingge Dance, also known as the “dance to the hero’s song”, is a cool mix of opera, dance, and martial art (武术). Dating back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), it is often performed during traditional Chinese festivals. However, it became popular online during the Chinese New Year in 2024 with videos of the dance getting millions of views!
A man named Chen is really good at this dance. He’s been doing it for over 20 years and people call him “fat snake” because he’s strong and really good at snake dancing. Before the Spring Festival, he was known to about 2,000 people on Douyin—that’s the Chinese TikTok. But after the holiday, he got famous and now about 20,000 people follow him. Some fans even traveled from other provinces just to take a picture with him.
Yingge dancing is closely related to 4 famous Chinese story called Outlaws of the Marsh (水浒传). Usually, 36 people perform the dance, speaking for the 36 heroes in the story. The dancers practice in the evenings after work and it’s hard work. If they’re doing a full day of performances, they have to practice for at least six months. In addition, the costumes and props (支柱) are heavy, so it can be difficult to dance for so long. But it’s not all hard work.
