Jeremy looked across the hot grassy land.South Africa was a long way from his hometown in America.
"Ready?" Dad asked.
"Ready," Jeremy answered. They climbed into the old truck.Jeremy hardly ever spent time with his father,a famous wildlife photographer. So far,he wasn't sure whether he liked following his dad around. The job seemed hard and boring.
As the truck moved along the rough road, there was a big crash. The door had fallen off!
"Now we can see better," Dad laughed.Their guide Makalu threw the door into the back of the truck.
They stopped near a watering hole.Makalu said he was friends with the elephants that sometimes came here.Maybe they'd see some.
Before long,Jeremy saw a small group of elephants walk toward the water.Dad jumped out of the truck and focused his camera on the largest elephant.
Jeremy noticed a baby elephant walking between two adults. It was small,by elephant standards.Jeremy watched as they neared the water. The larger elephants walked into the water, showering themselves happily. They drew water into their trunks and shot it into the air.It was an elephant party. Then the baby elephant rushed in and water went up to its eyes. The water was too deep for it.The baby elephant was in trouble. It tried to climb out of the water, but the bank was too steep (陡峭的).Other elephants tried pushing the baby up,without success. The mother elephant shouted.
Jeremy took the broken door from the back of the truck.Makalu saw what Jeremy was planning and ran to help.Together they pulled the door down to the water.Makalu comforted the mother elephant, gently explaining that they were going to help her baby.

15.(2025 西城区校级模拟) Personality types are related to structural(结构上的)differences in the brain, which could explain why one child grows up to be impulsive(冲动的)and outgoing while another becomes hardworking and thoughtful.
Structural differences between the brains of 85 people have been studied by researchers, and they have grouped them into four main personality types, including"curiosity seeking"(featuring impulsive actions),"harm avoidance"(featuring pessimism and shyness),"reward dependence"(featuring addictive behaviors)and"persistence"(featuring diligence, hard work and perfectionism). The researchers said the brain differences are structural and can be measured in the size of specific areas of the brain related to each of the four personality types. For example, people with curiosity﹣seeking personalities had a structurally bigger area in the brain while people with harm﹣avoidance personalities had much smaller volumes(体积)of tissue(组织)in brain areas.
In light of this,it's useful to know the structural differences in the brain, especially when it comes to understanding a child's behavior and choosing the right way to help him improve. For example, there is no point shouting at a child who is very shy or telling him off, because it does not come naturally to him to put himself forward. But actually knowing there is a biological reason for this helps educators or parents to use the right way to help him to make up for it.Similarly, people who show addictive(上瘾的)behaviors could be helped at an early age because they are at risk of turning to some bad habits if they do not get the family support and encouragement they need.
"This study shows that personality characteristics are something you are born with, but their full expression can be changed during development with the right way,"said ProfessorVenneri, who carried out the study with colleagues from the University of Parma in Italy and Washington University in St Louis.
If you know it's not something you do but something you are,you can change the environment to reduce the risk.Knowing that someone has such a predisposition(体质)could help them use preventive strategies(策略)and avoid potentially harmful situations.
(1)According to the passage, who doesn't fall into the four main personality types?
A.Jason,who habitually acts before thinking.
B.Carol, who can't help playing with phones.
C.Hank, who always likes to do things perfectly.

B.They find it completely natural to put themselves forward.
C.They are always too nervous to be educated and helped.
D.They are often shouted at and told what to do by others.
(3)What's the main idea of the passage?
A.People have chances to change their personality types.
B.Scientists have recognized four different personality types.
C.The structures of the brains can influence personality types.

17.(2025 西城区校级模拟) In recent years, the Metaverse(元宇宙)has become a widely discussed topic in technology, entertainment, and social interaction. The Metaverse is a virtual(虚拟的),interconnected digital world where people can work, socialize, and play through digital avatars(数字化身).Unlike traditional online platforms,it provides an immersive experience that combines virtual reality(VR),augmented reality(AR),blockchain technology, and artificial intelligence(AI).
One of the most fascinating aspects of the Metaverse is digital ownership. In the real world, people own physical items, but in the Metaverse, they can own virtual property, such as clothes for their avatars, pieces of digital land,or unique artworks called NFTs(Non﹣Fungible Tokens非同质化代币).These virtual items are securely stored using blockchain technology, which ensures that they cannot be copied or stolen easily.
However, the rise of the Metaverse also brings concerns. Some psychologists warn about digital escapism, which refers to people spending too much time in virtual world to avoid real﹣life problems.A recent study conducted by the Digital Well﹣being Research Institute found that individuals who spend more than six hours a day in virtual environments report higher levels of anxiety and loneliness. In contrast, those who use the Metaverse for only a few hours a week tend to experience positive effects, such as increased social connection and creative expression.
Experts suggest that proper use is the key. While the Metaverse offers entertainment and new social opportunities, relying too much on virtual experiences could lead to weakened relationships, reduced physical activity, and even difficulty distinguishing between reality and fiction. One psychologist,Dr.Lewis Carter, explains:"Just like any tool, the Metaverse can be beneficial or harmful depending on how we use it."
As the Metaverse continues to develop,it brings both exciting possibilities and challenges.Whether it becomes a tool for innovation or a source of social problems depends on how people choose to use it.

A.Using the Metaverse to solve real﹣world problems.
B.Over﹣relying on virtual experiences to avoid real life.
C.Taking a break from digital devices to enjoy outdoor activities.
D.Expressing oneself through digital art.
(3)Which statement would the author most likely agree with?

A.Jason,who habitually acts before thinking.
B.Carol, who can't help playing with phones.
C.Hank, who always likes to do things perfectly.
D.Jenny, who is positive and enjoys making friends.
(2)According to the passage, which of the following is true about shy people? A
A.They have brains structurally different from some others.
B.They find it completely natural to put themselves forward.
C.They are always too nervous to be educated and helped.
D.They are often shouted at and told what to do by others.
(3)What's the main idea of the passage? C
A.People have chances to change their personality types.
B.Scientists have recognized four different personality types.
C.The structures of the brains can influence personality types.
D.Structural differences in the brain have effects on education.

(3)主旨大意题。根据第一段Personality types are related to structural(结构上的)differences in the brain, which could explain why one child grows up to be impulsive(冲动的)and outgoing while another becomes hardworking and thoughtful.(性格类型与大脑的结构差异有关,这可以解释为什么一个孩子长大后冲动外向,而另一个孩子则变得勤奋周到。)结合全文可知,本文主要介绍了人的性格类型与大脑的结构差异有关,大脑的结构会影响人格类型。故选C。

A.The Metaverse will eventually replace real﹣world communication.
B.The Metaverse is beneficial to people when it is used properly.
C.Virtual world mainly impact mental health, but they also improve communication.
D.Overusing the Metaverse may affect real life, but it is still the future of technology.
